I thought this was going to be an erotic romance, but it turned out to be so much more than that. Iris and Caleb seem to have it all. Childhood sweethearts, Caleb is now a star rookie in the NBA. Iris has never known another man but she is hesitant to move their relationship forward. Caleb wants her to move in with him but Iris is more focused on her career in sports management.
One night Iris is by herself in a bar watching a basketball game on the TV. A man approaches her and they start to talk. She tells him she has a boyfriend and while he respects that, he feels an really strong connection to Iris. They talk for hours and she quickly realizes that he is August, another young basketball player on the cusp of greatness.
Time goes on and Iris finds herself pregnant, and complications arise causing her to spend most of her pregnancy on bed rest. She is not thrilled with the pregnancy, she has to give up her dream job and rely on Caleb.
Iris has no support system. Her mother is not really in the picture and Iris likes it that way. She has her cousin, who is also her best friend, but she’s not in any position to help. The baby is born, and Iris is struggling. She once again runs into August, and he realizes she needs help.
Meanwhile, Caleb is getting more demanding and possessive. And then he hits her. He apologizes but she tells him if he ever does it again, she’s leaving with the baby. He does, and she tries, but he has set her up good. Dragging her home, everything changes. He is now in charge, and she is for all intents and purposes, his prisoner and his punching bag. There are some graphic scenes of abuse and sexual abuse, so be warned. On the other hand, Iris does get her happily ever after thank goodness!
This was a terrific though upsetting read. If you can handle the violence, I highly recommend it.
