CATNAPPED! by Elaine Viets

This is the latest entry in the Dead-End Job series, one of my favorite cozy mystery series. While it is a series, each book does stand alone, and Elaine is very good about including pertinent information for newcomers to the series.

The series started out with Helen Hawthorne, the main character, working for cash under the table to keep her ex-husband from finding her or her money. The series has evolved, and Helen is now married and running a private detective agency with her husband, Phil. But never fear, she still ends up working minimum wage jobs, but now she’s going undercover to help solve the case.

Catnapped! revolves around the cat show industry and Helen ends up working as a cat groomer for a breeder. A divorcing couple can’t agree on anything except their shared love of their show kitten. But when the kitten is kidnapped (catnapped!) Helen & Phil are on the case. Unfortunately, the ex-husband ends up dead, and the wife arrested for the murder. Meanwhile, things aren’t all good on the home-front either. The Coronado apartment building is in need of major repairs, and Margery seems more inclined to sell than renovate.

One of the best things about this series is how Viets shines a light on the minimum wage jobs and the people that work so hard for so little. Invariably I learn something new in every book – like the grooming involved with show cats! I love the south Florida setting, not only because I live there but because Viets really brings it to life – the setting becomes almost another character. This is another smart mystery with intrigue, laughs and a lot of heart.

Some Like It Wet: Cat Washing

By Elaine Viets

I washed a cat once. She was a stray, a mostly white cat named Elsah. My husband Don and lived in an old house in St. Louis with a coal chute. Elsah got into the coal chute and came out gray. She rubbed against our white woodwork until it was gray, too.

She needed a bath. I used Woolite. The label said it was gentle on everything and wouldn’t shrink, fade or change the color. I didn’t want a different cat, just a clean one.

It took eight towels – to mop up the blood.

When I researched my new Dead-End Job mystery, Catnapped!, I was surprised that some cats love baths. Particularly long-haired show cats.

Catnapped! is set in the world of show cats. South Florida financier Mort Barrymore is murdered, and his beloved show cat is kidnapped for a half-million dollar ransom. Husband-and-wife PI team Helen Hawthorne and Phil Sagemont go undercover to find the catnapper and Mort’s killer.

Helen’s up to her elbows in cat hair, learning how to wash Persian show cats. I had the help of Tracy Petty, a judge for the Cat Fanciers’ Association, to advise me on cat washing. Judge Tracy used to breed elaine's kittyprize Persians.

Long-haired cats are groomed like actresses for the Oscars, and treated like divas. You don’t just dunk the cat in the water. You must warm the shampoo for the Persian’s bath. No cold soap on those pretty coats. All the towels – and you’ll need at least half a dozen – should be warmed in the dryer.

Before you wash your Persian cat, clean her teeth with a pointed toothbrush designed for feline mouths. Even well-trained cats often don’t like this part. The toothpaste is poultry-flavored, but I can’t tell if that’s cage-free chicken.

The actual cat washing starts with Goop. You read that right. The hand cleaner for mechanics.

Judge Petty gently lifts her cat into “the empty sink with the drain closed off. The Goop goes on a dry cat, carefully so the fur doesn’t mat, but with the water slowly running into the sink.”

Smear the creamy gunk all over the cat’s fur, including the tail, until the fluffy fur is a flat, sticky mess.

This is where my cat would amputate my arm, but Judge Petty said, “You have to start when they’re young.”

Persians have thick fur, and nature intended cats’ coats to protect them from rainy weather, so you have to work to get them wet, Judge Petty said. The challenge is getting the water through the dense fur all the way to the skin. If you don’t wet the cat thoroughly, the shampoo won’t get there, either.

So you work the Goop into the coat with water. The Goop washes the cat, and then you have to wash out the Goop.

Rinse the white-smeared fur completely. Any residue will attract more dirt and her fur will look cruddy.

Once the Goop’s gone, it’s time for the nice warm Orvus shampoo. Then rinse again.

Bored? I hope not, because the cat has to be washed again. This time with TropiClean papaya and kiwi shampoo. Next, the conditioner.

So far you’ve used Goop, two shampoos and a conditioner.

I don’t use that on my hair. But my hair doesn’t look as good as the cat’s.

After thoroughly rinsing the cat, you float her coat. Wrap the cat in another  warm towel, clean the sink, and then refill it with warm water.

Dunk the cat back in the water and see if her coat floats. Gently squish the fur and check for bubbles. Those mean there’s still soap in the coat.

If there’s no soap, wrap the cat in one more warm towel and gently squeeze the water out of her coat.

Then the coat’s blown out with a special hair dryer for cats to separate all the fur and get it standing away from the body.

elaine viets & kittyA Persian coat is too thick to air dry. In warm, humid Florida, Persians have to be dried quickly and thoroughly. Otherwise, the cat risks ringworm.

Besides, a wet cat licking her coat will smear that clean fur with cat spit. Worse, the cat could pull out her fur and swallow it, which leads to hair balls.

How long does the drying take?

Almost as long as the bathing.

“My cats loved the blow dry,” Judge Petty said. “It’s like they knew they were gettin’ beautiful, especially the boys. They’d purr the whole time.”

By that time, I’d be ready for a hot bath and a nap.

But not until I gave my self-cleaning cats treats. I never realized I had easy-care cats.

THE TARGET by L. J. Sellers

With her latest Agent Dallas outing, Ms. Sellers has once again hit it out of the park. Focusing on the world of industrial espionage and cutting edge medical technology, Sellers shows that while greed is universal and seemingly boundless, you can’t keep a good agent down, and Agent Dallas is the best of the best.

Dallas lives for the thrill of working undercover and rides high on the adrenaline rush from a tense situation. The death of another agent in San Diego under suspicious circumstances starts her on the new assignment, which quickly becomes high risk. The stakes are high and the other side thinks nothing of taking those who interfere off the board. permanently.

Intertwined with the case is the murder of an aging film star. Are the two cases connected? Few authors can do one successful series, but Sellers has two – with Detective Jackson and with Agent Dallas. Which is better? Try both and decide for yourself.

The Taming Series

Kate convinces her father that she needs to marry before Biana debuts, and he aquieses. Bianca and Kate have a temptestuous relationship but luckily, Kate’s been away with their stepmother for months.

His friend convinces him to become the boy’s tutor, “Luc Dore”, insuring that he gets to know Bianca. That ruse works, until they fall in love and Bianca finds out he’s been lying to her.

This is a very quick read but could have used a little more depth. The plot is thin, the characters interesting albeit shallow, and the predictable ending lacks spark. A very quick read for sure.

Dr. Lou Welcome is a fine Boston emergency room physician who also happens to be a recovering addict. He is asked to cover for his boss at a medical conference in Atlanta, and takes his best friend, Cap, along.

While out trail running, a slippery slope causes Cap to severely injure his leg, and Lou manages to get him to the hospital but that’s just the beginning of Cap’s problems. He picks up a new bug, nicknamed the “Doomsday Germ” by the press, while hospitalized.

Turns out a right wing domestic terrorist group was the creator of the germ, which they planned on using to blackmail the U.S. government into shutting down all entitlement programs. But the flesh eating bacteria just grew out of control and completely resistant to all known treatments, including the cure the terrorists thought they had, and even the Center for Disease Control is stumped. The F.B.I. gets involved, and the race between the government and the terrorists is on to find a cure before thousands die.

Over the years, Palmer has grown an audience for his medical thrillers, and this page turner should keep them happy.

On a personal note, I need to add how saddened I was when Michael Palmer passed away in late October, 2013. I had the privilege of meeting him on several occasions, and he was a real mensch – warm, charismatic and just a wonderful human being. He always remembered to ask about my kids and was always available to anyone who needed anything.

I met Michael through the International Thriller Writers organization at ThrillerFest, their annual convention. I was always so happy to see him at conventions because he always seemed so happy to see me; his smile was infectious.

When I was looking for authors willing to visit my library, I only had to ask him once. Not only did he come down, he brought Daniel along, too, and my library patrons got to meet two authors, who not only spoke about their books, but played music and sang. It was such a fun event and a real treat for me & my patrons.

I checked with St. Martin’s Press and they informed me that Michael left one more book behind, which is scheduled for May 2015.

Michael holds a special place in my heart and I will always remember him fondly.

A Memoir of Overcoming

Ms. Kaufmman became an Emmy award winning television news correspondent in spite of being the daughter of alcoholic American Indian parents.

Her first major success came in Seattle because of the illness of both the morning news anchor and morning news reporter. As the only one left standing, Kauffman was given the opportunity to anchor the morning news and made the most of it.

Kauffman’s success had its price – 2 divorces and episodes of depression and remorse.

Ms. Kauffman’s story is quite powerful. Unfortunately, her tendency to switch back and forth in time, telling the story and then providing the backfill, makes for a difficult read. If you a fan, its good reading; if not, you might want to give it a pass.

At the Kingsborough Ball (Book 2)

This is the second book in the Kingsborough Ball trilogy. The series is founded “at the Kingsborough Ball,”a lavish event at the heart of the first book in the series, The Trouble with Being a Duke, and this book begins at the same event. These books do not have to be read in order.

Lady Rebecca has been orphaned, and her aunt and uncle take her in. She is of marriageable age and their goal appears to be to marry her off to the highest bidder. She feigns madness for a couple of years to avoid this end but time runs out.

Unfortunately, the two highest bidders are both fifty years older than she is. Barnes seems to like the “trophy wife” theme, but in this case the trophy wife to be has no intention of living that life. Instead, she sneaks into the Kingsborough Ball, and meets Daniel Neville.

Neville is a notorious rake and heir to the Marquis of Wolvington. He is also orphaned and his aunt and uncle have threatened to cut him off financially unless he mends his ways and finds a bride by the end of the month. Off to the ball he goes, where he is ostracized by all the good girls looking for a husband.

Then he spots this gorgeous woman in a scandalous scarlet dress. There is a mutual attraction and need, and Daniel pursues Lady Rebecca, but finds he can’t outbid her other suitors. Things take an even more scandalous turn and then they have to live with the consequences.

There is the requisite happy ending, of course. But there are also lots of obstacles along the way and some explicit sex. It is a very fast paced story and Barnes really knows how to draw the reader in – I read it in one sitting.

I am looking forward to the last book in the series, The Danger in Tempting an Earl. The teaser of a first chapter of that book is in the back of this one.

NOTE: As of this writing, Kindle version available for $.99!

THE SACRIFICE by Peg Brantley

Another great read from Ms Brantley. Although it begins in Colorado which Ms. Brantley calls home, most of the action takes place in and around New Orleans, or as we say Naw’lins.

Mex Anderson was an honest Mexican cop. The drug cartel punished him by killing his pregnant wife and two children. Now a high ranking member of the cartel has come to Mex with a proposition – find the leader’s missing daughter and he will give Mex the name of the man who ordered the murder of Mex’s family. The leader’s son applies additional pressure to Mex by kidnapping Mex’s sister to be returned only if his sister is returned alive.

Suspense builds until near the end when it all comes together, but wait, the fat lady hasn’t sung yet, so keep on reading. You won’t be disappointed.

THE SON by Jo Nesbo

Nesbo is a Norwegian author who has made his mark in English speaking countries with translations of a series of novels about Harry Hole, who is a detective operating in Norway. The Son is a stand alone novel and an excellent addition to his previous books.

Sonny Loftus has been in prison for 12 years for crimes that he has not committed. He is compensated by an easy incarceration and all the heroin he can consume to insure that he take the blame for those crimes. He is popular with the other prisoners due to his ability to calm them down and soothe them.

Sonny became an addict when his father, a police officer, committed suicide and he agreed to serve time in jail. But when Sonny learns a long held secret about his father, he executes a brilliant escape from prison and begins to hunt the people that caused his father’s suicide. Among these are two men; one known as the “Twin” and the other the “Mole,” who figure prominently in the crime scene in Oslo.

In the course of his investigation, Sonny meets a young woman who is head of a home for the indigent and falls in love with her. She reciprocates when she meets him while he is staying at the home. He also successfully kicks the heroin habit and becomes fixated with living a normal life with Martha, the young lady he met.

Police methods, investigations and good and evil people are similar to these types all over the world and the events of Sonny’s quests, while set in Oslo, are very much like those of a novel set anywhere else in the world. Characterizations are well done and readers will empathize with Sonny and his decisions to take vengeance on various people, as well as his finding both the “Twin” and the “Mole”.

Well done and engrossing book.
