July bookshelf

July 1, 2014

collage 714I updated the Win Books page for July with some terrific new thrillers! As usual, there are NY Times bestsellers, solid storytellers and some newbies.

The Brads are back! New York Times bestselling author Brad Thor delivers his most frightening and pulse–pounding thriller ever, Act of War. In former delta force operator and New York Times bestseller Brad Taylor’s latest Pike Logan thriller, Days of Rage, the Taskforce must stop their most devastating threat yet—a weapon of mass destruction.

A rising media star must battle a diabolical enemy in Eyes on You,  a riveting tale of psychological suspense from New York Times bestselling author Kate White.  In Sam Cabot’s exhilarating new novel, Skin of the Wolf, a vicious murder in Sotheby’s begins a series of inexplicable events surrounding an Iroquois ritual mask and a secret that could unleash the most terrifying chaos and destruction the world has ever seen.

Matthew Quirk gives us The Directive, a tale of two brothers, millions of dollars–and the heist of a lifetime. A.J. Colucci is out with her second thriller, Seeders, which Douglas Preston called “a bravura performance, as good as Crichton, with vivid characters, crisp writing, and exquisitely creepy science.” How can you resist!

Wendy Tyson is out with her second Allison Campbell Mystery, Deadly Assets. If 1830 Scotland makes you happy, you won’t want to miss  A Grave Matter by Anna Lee Huber. This “polished third pre-Victorian mystery” (Publisher’s Weekly) rounds out this month’s bookshelf.

If you are new to the site, each month I run a contest in conjunction with the International Thriller Writers group. We put together a list of books including bestsellers and debut authors, so you can win some of your favorites and find some new favorites.

What makes this contest really special is that all of the books (except eBooks) are signed by the author!

Thanks for reading, and good luck!

ALL THE THINGS YOU ARE by Declan Hughes

Clare Taylor gave up her fledgling acting career to be a wife and mother, but after a wild week away from her family, she returns home to find an empty house, her family gone, everything gone. As she walks through empty house to the yard, she finds the body of the family dog, eviscerated.

Thinking it is a Halloween prank gone terribly wrong, she awakens the next morning to find the sheriff waiting to padlock the foreclosed home that she believed they owned free and clear. Then a childhood friend of her husband Danny is found dead in the yard, and things become even more frightening and complicated, going back to a Halloween fire when Danny was in high school.

The story moves back and forth from that high school event to present day, but mistaken identities are at the crux of the story, and all the confusion is eventually sorted out. These are complex characters in a story that seems to circumvent logic, yet Hughes makes it all work. Readers who appreciate family thrillers from writers like Harlan Coben or Linwood Barclay will find much to enjoy here.

May bookshelf

May 1, 2014

MAY 14 Collage 3I updated the Win Books page for May and I’m really jazzed about these thrillers! As usual, there is a great collection of NY Times bestsellers, solid storytellers and some newbies.

Late addition to the bookshelf: THE KEEPER by John Lescroart! Dismas Hardy returns to hunt for clues about a woman who has gone missing. Jeffery Deaver is back with THE SKIN COLLECTOR, with a new killer on the loose: a criminal inspired by the Bone Collector.

Steve Berry offers up his latest, THE LINCOLN MYTH. Berry writes incredibly well researched historical thrillers that will entertain you and painlessly educate you. Joseph Finder has a terrific new thriller, SUSPICION, about a father who is forced to make a choice with unspeakable consequences.

One of my favorite debut authors of last year is back with her sophomore effort; Jenny Milchman returns with the outstanding family thriller RUIN FALLS. Military thriller fans are in luck – Dale Brown has a new one, STARFIRE.

THE HOLLOW GIRL by Reed Farrel Coleman, the final novel in the critically acclaimed Moe Prager Mystery series, is up for grabs. I loved the debut EAT WHAT YOU KILL by Ted Scofield, a terrific financial thriller with an unusual protagonist. Debuts THE BUDDY SYSTEM by Brandon Herbert and FATAL SNOW by Robert Walton and an ebook, LEGITIMATE BUSINESS by Michael Niemann, round out this month’s bookshelf.

If you are new to the site, each month I run a contest in conjunction with the International Thriller Writers group. We put together a list of books including bestsellers and debut authors, so you can win some of your favorites and find some new favorites.

An Elizabeth Pepperhawk/Avivah Rosen Mystery

The protagonists,  Elizabeth Pepper-hawk and Avivah Rosen, are women who have served in Vietnam, as Wildwind herself did. In Wildwind’s second mystery, set in 1972, Army nurse Pepperhawk is between assignments when she receives a call from Benny Kirkpatrick, ex-Special Forces first sergeant.

Their friend Avivah is in trouble, and with Benny and Avivah’s friend, has sought refuge in a convent in the mountains of North Carolina. When Pepper goes to help, she finds mil-itary intelligence officer Darby Baxter, her on-again, off-again love interest, with three other men.

What follows are days without electricity in a mostly empty convent, in a snowstorm. Avivah, Pepper, Darby and Benny, along with a few nuns and some members of a paramilitary think tank, struggle to survive the cold amidst murder, secret passageways and lost wills–delicious reading with tangling sub-plots. Too bad this series didn’t get more attention as the stories are quite good.

RUIN FALLS by Jenny Milchman

Liz and Paul Daniels have two young children and live a fairly idyllic life on an organic family farm. Paul is a professor who is determined to live a green, postconsumer lifestyle and Liz goes along with it as much as possible.

They take their first family vacation in years, a road trip to visit Paul’s parents on their commercial farm but stop at a hotel along the way. When Liz wakes up, her children are gone, and then Paul disappears, too.

The police immediately abandon their search, considering it a domestic dispute, and Liz is heartbroken, yet furious. She is determined to find her children, and begins her search with her in-laws, who deny any knowledge of their son or grandchildren. Liz soon heads home to her husband’s computer and his office at the university and quickly realizes that she doesn’t know her husband at all. Her best friend tries to help but she has her own hands full with a son who has suffered a traumatic brain injury.

How far Paul will go to live his politics and how a determined mother can seemingly overcome almost any obstacle is at the heart of this tautly written page-turner. Milchman proves her chops with her sophomore effort and she carves out a new niche with this unusual environmental family thriller.

Celebrate Poetry, All Month Long

April 1, 2014

More on National Poetry Month – NaPoWriMo! Write a poem each day in April.

Cheri Lucas Rowlands's avatarWordPress.com News

NaPoWriMo , or National Poetry Writing Month, is back!

NaPoWriMo is an annual project in which participants write a poem each day in April. It unfolds in the tradition of NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month, held in November) and motivates, inspires, and engages poets of all levels, genres, and backgrounds.

While a poem a day is your ultimate goal, there’s really no “right” way to participate. Start today and keep at it, and experiment as you see fit. Focus entirely on sonnets, or experiment with free verse. Participate on your own, or collaborate with others. Publish on your blog, or experiment offline.

Ideas to get started

  • Publish poems each day, focusing on a different genre each week.
  • Handwrite poems in a journal, for your eyes only.
  • Start a collective with others, plan themes for April, and publish poems on your own blogs focused on these themes.
  • Create a new blog or group site specifically for this monthly challenge.

THE SECRET OF MAGIC by Deborah Johnson

March 10, 2014

Regina Robichard is a young, idealistic black lawyer working for the NAACP and her mentor/boss, Thurgood Marshall shortly after the end of World War II. Marshall receives a lot of mail, but one letter in particular touches Regina.

One of her favorite childhood authors, M.P. Calhoun, has written to ask Marshall to investigate the death of a young black soldier on his way home from the war to small town Revere, Mississippi. Enclosed is a photo of the young man with his father, and Regina latches on to it as a talisman, determined to find justice in the deep South.

Regina has her own interesting history. She never knew her father, he was lynched before she was born and her mother became a political activist. But she remembers with great fondness the book she read and reread as a child, “The Secret of Magic,” a tale of murder and a magical forest.

Living in New York City does not really prepare her for life in rural Mississippi and how blacks are treated. But Regina perseveres, despite threats, another murder and a vicious attack in her quest for fair treatment for a minority many Mississippians still feel they own.

This is fast reading that tugs at the heart with reminders of how much things have changed, and how much maybe they haven’t. My love affair with Amy Einhorn books continues.
