A Maiden Lane Novella

Hippolyta Royle has just escaped from a kidnapper. This is no ordinary kidnapper, however. No ransom was involved; instead the kidnapper, a Duke, wants to marry the wealthy heiress, but she’s not interested. More to the point, she wants out and with the help of a kind maid, makes her escape, wearing borrowed, ill fitting clothes and running through the rainy woods, the hounds after her.

Eventually she makes it to the road, a mud splattered mess, where she flags down a passing coach, begging a ride. The occupant, Mr. Matthew Mortimer, takes pity on her, thinking her to be a poor beggar girl or perhaps even a prostitute.

They have quite the adventure as they travel to London, where they each find out the other’s true identity and realize they are meant to be together.

This is a novella and available as an ebook or audiobook only, so I can’t say how long it is exactly. I can say I read it in an hour or so and enjoyed it. Hoyt is a good storyteller, and that comes across even in this abbreviated format.

The Clayborne Brides, Book 1

If this title sounds familiar, then you are probably a long time Julie Garwood fan. This is the first book of a trilogy that was originally published in 1997. I never read it, and now the publisher is making it available as an e-book with really lovely new cover art. Compare to the paperback cover on the right and you can see how almost ten years can really make a difference.

I didn’t know that Garwood had written some Western romance and this is an really fun example of the genre. This is a series of novellas and this one, printed, is only 120 pages so a really quick read.

Travis Clayborne is the youngest brother and always listens to his Mama Rose (I have to admit, the name threw me right out of the story, it’s one of the most iconic Broadway/movie characters from Gypsy!) Once I got past that, I was fine with Travis going off to help escort Miss Emily Finnegan to Golden Crest, Montana. Emily is a mail order bride from Boston who doesn’t have a clue what she’s getting herself into.

Apparently Emily’s previous escorts – yes, there were more than one – have had really bad luck, even fatal luck, in escorting her, so Travis is a little nervous about the trek he’s making. It doesn’t help that when he meets her, she almost decks him. But he knows not to disobey his mama, so off they go. The short trip gets extended by a few days when the gully is too high to cross, giving Travis and Emily the time to get to know one another and fall in love.

By the time they are about to reach her destination, she realizes she can’t marry the man she’s promised to, but feels it best to let him know in person. Travis is not too happy about delivering Emly to her husband-to-be, but neither are communicating and all hell breaks loose once they arrive.

There is a lot of humor in this sweet romance, and I’m looking forward to finishing the trilogy. Stay tuned.

From Manhattan With Love (Book 1)

Paige was a sickly child with a heart condition, and her brother Matt has been overprotective ever since. She’s had a crush on Matt’s best friend Jake since high school, when he gently rejected her and promised Matt he’d keep away.

Fast forward and Paige is a successful events planner, working in NYC with her two best friends. Eva is a chef and Frankie is a floral designer, but they all lose their jobs in a huge layoff.

The girls are all despondent, until Jake suggests they start their own business. But a start up is a lot of work and in this case, pretty much no reward. Until Jake steps up and has them create a party for him that is a huge hit and gets their business going.

The old feelings Paige had return in full force, and the heat between her and Jake leaps off the page. Jake has his own problems; he’s a wealthy bad boy and a serial dater with childhood issues still plaguing him. The relationship between the friends rang a lot truer for me than the romance, but all in all it was a very enjoyable read.

This is the first book of a series and from what I understand, Eva and Frankie will get their own stories. I am looking forward to both!

RECIPE FOR DISASTER by Stacey Ballis

When I find an author I like, I go back and read all their books. Such is the case here. After reading Wedding Girl, I had to go find earlier books by this author and this is the first one I found.

Ballis writes foodie chick-lit, which is the best short description I can come up with. Recipe for Disaster also deals with renovating an old house, and since I divide my TV time between the Food Network and HGTV, this book was right in my wheelhouse. Plus I could read it while watching those shows, one of the reasons I like reality TV.

Anneke Stroudt is a contractor for a high end building company. Her co-workers have quite the men’s club going on that includes Barbie doll type receptionists, and Anneke is definitely an outsider, but her work is so good they keep her busy.

But then the shit hits the fan. Anneke catches her fiance cheating, and she tells off a client, with the end result of losing her fiance, her home (which was his) and her job. Or as she puts it, a “country song waiting to happen.”

Luckily she has the old historic wreck she’s been working on in her spare time. Her fiance is part owner but is feeling so guilty he tells her she can pay him back when she sells it. It’s a mess but now it’s home.

First thing she needs is some contract labor but no one will help her. Turns out her old boss has blacklisted her. Eventually she finds an Indian man wearing a turban who is looking for work. No one will hire him because of his looks, but Anneke is happy for the help.

In a slightly other worldly twist, she finds an old journal in the home from the original owner’s cook. Every time she has a decision to make, she opens the book at random and the answer to her question is there. Well, most of the time.

Meanwhile, a co-worker who she despised has offered up some cash and his expertise to help with the house. Desperate, she acquiesces and things really get moving.

Anneke learns to cook, to trust her friends and her instincts, and has her happy ending. This was a fun read and I will be reviewing more Ballis books for sure.

The Billionaire Builders, Book 1

Probst takes her inspiration from the oh-so-hot Property Brothers in this first book of a new series.

Caleb Pierce is the eldest of three brothers and the only one still working for the family building business. His mother’s family had started it several generations earlier, but after she ran off and died his father is left with a mighty big chip on his shoulder. He fights with his other sons and they take off on their own. Until he dies.

The will has a surprise – the only way the sons will inherit the business is if they all live together and run the business together for one year, and show a profit. They grudgingly agree to give it a try.

Morgan is a beautiful but tough designer to the stars. Her latest clients give her 6 months to build their dream home in the upscale town where the Pierce Brothers are the best builders around. She basically blackmails Caleb into building the house and they fight their attraction for each other through most of the book – until they finally give in to the blazing hot romance.

I loved the quirky book references and I’m a Property Brothers fan, so this book worked for me. Looking forward to the next book in the series, Any Time, Any Place.

Wicked Trilogy, Book 3

No, I haven’t read books 1 & 2 and I don’t think I’ve ever even read this author. But as has been my experience with historical romances, it doesn’t matter in the least.

The Duke of Aylesbury, Lancelot Hemingford, was the second son and was never supposed to inherit the title. But his brother died, and Hemingford is under a cloud of suspicion since the coroner hasn’t ruled murder out. Hemingford reluctantly moves to the country, laying low until his innocence can be proven.

His neighbor brings him an intriguing offer; marry his niece, and he will use his influence to see the Duke’s name cleared. Refuse, and he will produce a witness claiming Hemingford poisoned his brother. Reluctantly, Hemingford agrees to the marriage.

Marianne Radley is a bit leery of the Duke. He has a reputation as a rake, but when he proposes, she has her own reasons to accept. Neither of them thought this marriage would be anything but a convenience, but Hemingford is intrigued by his new wife’s intelligence, curiosity and passion, and she with his.

Interesting characters and the mysterious death of a duke combine to make this romance a real page turner. Guess I need to root out books 1 and 2.

Bitter Springs Series, Book 1

This is the first book of a trilogy, and I read the second and third books a while ago and really liked them. Like most romances, order isn’t all that important but I was happy to finally get the background of this trilogy.

These are historicals, set in the Old West around 1889, and I have learned that the difference between Western Romance and just plain old westerns is the happy ending. Romances must have a happy ending, and westerns often end with somebody riding out of town.

Bitter Springs is a small town in Wyoming, a train stop on the western route. When a man named Nat Church gets murdered on the train, Kellen Coltrane is there. Nat hides his guns in Coltrane’s bags, and gives him some letters, asking him to stop in Bitter Springs and see “Penny Royal.”

Turns out Pennyroyal is the name of the hotel and the owner, the Widder Berry, is expecting him. Her sister was raped and murdered and the man sentenced to jail for it has escaped. His family runs the small town with bloodshed and fear, and the Widder wants to put an end to all the bloodshed.

Meanwhile, one by one the jurors and the marshal are killed so this is more mystery than romance. But Coltrane and Berry gradually fall in love and the mystery is solved, all ending with a happy ending.

Travis Series, Book 4

I always like Lisa Kleypas’s books. She writes both historical and contemporary romance, and she is a great story teller. So when I saw this book on the Romantic Times list of best contemporary romances of 2015, the ones they call “Love and Laughter,” I decided to give it a read. And I’m so glad I did.

Avery Crosslin is a wedding planner who was left at the altar, so she believes in happily ever after, but for other people. And she has some body image issues.

Avery is partners in business with her half-sister Sophia, who never knew about each other until their father died. Once having found each other, they move away together and start the wedding business. Sophia’s mother is not happy that her daughter moved away, but Sophia also left her fiance, an overpowering control freak, and she’s not moving back.

Joe Travis is a trust fund baby who seems to forget that. He works as a photographer, so when Avery runs into him fiddling with his camera while setting up for a Texas society wedding, she assumes he is the wedding photographer and gives him several orders. He listens respectfully, then introduces himself. She is mortified, and he is intrigued.

Avery can’t believe this rich, good looking man could possibly be interested in her, but a hot one night stand leaves her breathless. Determined not to get involved, she ignores him afterwards, but he is having none of that. He is smitten, and in hot pursuit.

Meanwhile Avery’s dream job – a reality TV show starring her as a wedding planner, may become her new reality. She has difficult clients to deal with, Sophia’s mother comes barreling into town causing trouble, and her friends from New York want her to move back. But what does that mean for Joe?

This is another winner for Kleypas.

A modern retelling of Pride and Prejudice

Hats off to Sittenfeld, she really caught Jane Austen’s voice in this contemporary story of women, class, romance and family.

Liz Bennet is a writer for a woman’s magazine in New York City. She is one of six sisters; closest in age and geography is Jane, a yoga instructor who has started in vitro with a sperm donor, determined to be a mom even though she is not in any relationship. When their father has a heart attack, they rush home to Cincinnati to find chaos.

Their younger sisters all live at home. The two youngest are all about the gym and their diets and have no interested in work or living on their own. The middle sister is a professional student, also living at home. And home has become a problem; he old Tudor house that’s been in the family for generations is falling down around them, and the family is oblivious.

Liz’s mother is only interested in social climbing and marrying off her daughters.  Her father has been managing the family money right into the ground. Liz takes charge and finds solutions for all of it, but gets little respect, appreciation and just grudging acquiescence.

Chip Bingley is a doctor who also starred on a “Bachelor” type TV reality show called Eligible. He’s returned home without having found his true love. When he meets Jane, sparks fly but the road to romance is hard won here.

Chip’s friend, Fitzwilliam Darcy, is also a doctor and a surgeon, with the expected super ego. Liz finds him condescending, to say the least.

If you’ve read Pride & Prejudice, you have a good idea where this all goes. If not, read it anyway. Eligible is great fun.

If you enjoy this sort of thing, check out HarperCollins’ Jane Austen Project. The Girl from Summer Hill by Jude Deveraux is another new update on Pride & Prejudice that’s a fun read.

Fool’s Gold, Book 22

I am working my way through a bunch of new-to-me contemporary romance writers, and having a blast. This is the 22nd book in a series and my first Susan Mallery read – and I loved it.

Fool’s Gold is the name of a small town that runs on tourism. Aidan Mitchell literally put the word “adventure” into the company he took over from his mom, Mitchell’s Adventure Tours. He specializes in outdoor adventures and dating tourists, many of whom are looking for a little sexual adventure, too. He’s a love ’em and leave ’em kinda guy, so this works well for everyone. Until it doesn’t.

One night at a bar, a young woman who looks vaguely familiar approaches Aidan. She wants more from their relationship, and he can’t even remember her name. She annihilates him and for the first time, he feels like maybe this isn’t the best way to live.

Shelby Gilmore hasn’t lived in Fool’s Gold that long. She escaped there, running from an abusive father after her mother dies. She lands her dream job working for a local bakery. But Shelby has a lot of creative ideas, and her boss isn’t always receptive to them.

Shelby’s been in therapy long enough to know that she has serious trust issues with men, and after witnessing the Aidan debacle in the bar, she comes up with a plan. She needs to make friends with a man, just friends, to learn how to trust one. And she decides Aidan might be just the man she’s looking for.

Aidan realizes he needs to change, so when Shelby approaches him about her project, he agrees – he needs to learn to treat women with respect, to learn they are not just sex objects. They agree to a six month period of hanging out, and being just friends. But of course, they fall in love.

This was a perfect romance; great characters, an interesting setting, and lots of angst, love and sex. Next time I need a quick, fun read I will reach for another Susan Mallery book.
