School for Dukes, Book 2

Did you know if you pre-order a book from Amazon, they will have it at your door on publication day?

From the publisher:

If adventure has a name…it must be Lady India Rochester. The intrepid archaeologist possesses a sharp blade and an even sharper knack for uncovering history’s forgotten women. Unfortunately, she has one annoying weakness: the dangerously handsome Duke of Ravenwood. Former best friend. Current enemy. And the man who dared to break her heart.

Daniel Bonds, the Duke of Ravenwood, is a thrill-seeking antiquities hunter who only plays by one rule: Never fall in love. He’s in it for the fortune and glory. At least that’s what he wants the world to think. He’s sworn to hide his tangled web of secrets, especially from the one woman he cares about and will protect at any cost.

But when a priceless relic is stolen from the British Museum, the rivals must align forces. Racing to recover the stolen antiquity and avert an international disaster? All in a day’s work. Avoiding their buried feelings? More and more impossible. For love is about to become the greatest treasure of all.

This was more a tale of intrigue than romance, but neither premise was fulfilled. Lady Danger, a fabulous nickname, is undoubtedly one of the strongest yet least believable characters in a historical romance. I think I’ve just read too many of these to buy her story. She takes a lover because she wants to. She is an archaeologist traveling the world unaccompanied by any sort of chaperone, and her brother is a duke. She has a marriage contract with the Duke of Ravenwood that she has no desire to fulfill. Or does she?

The Duke is a spy, a rather unlikely one at that. His reputation of being an incorrigible rake is a fabulous disguise, but when it comes to his childhood friend Indy, all bets are off. If he can’t keep his distance from her, he is a goner and in this book, they are thrust together until they figure out how to get to their happy ending.

There is a pervasive feeling of suspense throughout this story, with multiple bad guys and danger lurking around every corner. Despite the feminist heavy handedness, which is certainly odd in this time period, I did enjoy this book but I would have liked it more had it been more believable.

Dark Horse Cowboys, Book 1

Tyler Garrett is the middle son of the small town’s largest land owner and rancher. But he also has a gift; he can sing. While his mother was alive, she encouraged him to pursue a career in music, but his father was dead set against it, wanting Tyler to work the ranch with his brothers.

After his mom passes, Tyler decides to try out for a country music reality show. His father is furious and writes him out of his will but Tyler is determined. That is, until he helps a stranded motorist, Leah Benson, and her precocious young daughter. Tyler is immediately smitten and being the gentleman that he is, he tries to help them. That ends up with him taking them both to Leah’s grandmother’s small homestead, where she is struggling to make ends meet.

Leah is on the run from someone, and her fear is palpable, which brings out Tyler’s protective side. Her grandmother is being terrorized by the town’s bad boys, who happen to live next door and want her land cheap. Tyler sticks around the homestead for a while, fixing fences, helping with the upkeep of the farm and protecting the women. But he is on his way to Dallas and soon he must go. All sorts of problems immediately ensue, bringing Tyler back and getting his family involved.

I have really been enjoying the cowboy subgenre of romance. This is a charming story of love, redemption and justice. The characters are well developed and their stories are heartbreaking until everything is resolved and they reach their happily ever after. This fast, sweet read kept me turning pages until I reached the end. I’m looking forward to the next book in the series.

WHAT ALES THE EARL by Sally MacKenzie

Widow’s Brew Series, Book 1

From the publisher:

Scandal does not define the “fallen” ladies of Puddledon Manor’s Benevolent Home. Instead, it’s a recipe for an intoxicating new future as the women combine their talents—to operate their own brewery and alehouse . . .

When Penelope Barnes arrived at the Home with her young daughter, she discovered a knack for horticulture—and for cultivating the hops needed to produce a superlative pint. She put her scandalous affair with Harry Graham firmly in the past, along with the wrenching pain she felt when he went off to war. After all, she’d always known a farmer’s daughter had no future with an earl’s son. Now she has the pleasant memory of their passion, and she has little Harriet, for whom she would do anything—even marry a boring country vicar . . .

Harry went off to fight for the Crown unaware that his delightful interlude with his childhood friend had permanent consequences. Now he’s back in England, catapulted into the title by his brother’s untimely death. He sorely misses his former life of unfettered adventure, so when he has reason to explore Little Puddledon, he jumps at the chance. But what he finds there is something—and someone—he never knew he’d lost, and a once forbidden love whose time has come, if only he can persuade Pen he’s home to stay.

This was my first time reading this author. I had read a review that emphasized the strong female character, which intrigued me, so I borrowed the book from my library.

I did like these characters but I would have liked the secondary characters fleshed out a bit more, especially since this is an introduction to a new series. There are a few strong women here but we don’t learn much about them other than the bare basics. Same with all the other characters in this book, other than the main characters they are just names on a page.

At this point, I have read many historical romances of the “royalty can’t marry a commoner, or can he/she” ilk and it is not my favorite. The royalty in question here, the Earl, is bound and determined to marry another royal for the purposes of breeding, but he also plans to live his own life. A loveless marriage, but one that ensures the line continues, and in this case, an example set by the Earl’s parents. This one suffers from the same problem I have with many of these, the sudden light bulb moment near the end of the book of “I’m a  ____ (insert title of your choice) so I can marry whomever I please” moment which leads to the happy ending.

This book ends rather abruptly but with the requisite happy ending. While it wasn’t my favorite, I liked it well enough to look for the next book in the series. I always remain hopeful.

A Whiskey and Weddings Novel, Book 3

From the publisher:

She’s never had a no-strings fling. He’s never had anything else. But maybe this time will be an exception?

After a year of mourning her fiancé, Alexis Parker has worked hard to rediscover what she wants out of life. Fresh out of the military and back stateside, her brother offers her a marketing job at the Stag Distillery. Ready for a new challenge, Alexis agrees to accompany her new co-worker Jake Cooper on a Stag cross-country promotional tour. He may have an infamous playboy reputation, but Alexis is surprised to find out that there is more to him than meets the eye. And she likes what she sees. . .

Jake promised Alexis’s brother that he’d be an absolute gentleman. Of course, that was before he and Alexis hit the road, and they both agree that what Alexis’s big brother doesn’t know won’t hurt him. The plan: to keep their fling confined to the RV, and everything will go back to normal once they head home. Things progress in ways neither of them could have imagined, and Jake realizes that he and Alexis make a perfect mix. Can he convince her that he’s ready to shake things up and give true love a shot in Maybe for You?

This was a sweet romance that really tugs at the heartstrings. Almost a widow, Alexis lost her fiance which leaves her feeling bereft for many reasons. A year later, she is starting to come back to the land of the living.

Jake also has some baggage, and a real self-esteem problem. It was a nice change to see a man with that issue. These two damaged characters come together slowly, and have many ups and downs before they get to their happy ending. A most enjoyable read.

JOSH AND HAZEL’S GUIDE TO NOT DATING by Christina Lauren

September 5, 2018

From the publisher:

Most men can’t handle Hazel. But her best friend Josh isn’t most men. Don’t miss New York Times bestselling author Christina Lauren’s new novel about two people who are definitely not dating…no matter how often they end up in bed together.

Hazel Camille Bradford knows she’s a lot to take—and frankly, most men aren’t up to the challenge. If her army of pets and thrill for the absurd don’t send them running, her lack of filter means she’ll say exactly the wrong thing in a delicate moment. Their loss. She’s a good soul in search of honest fun.

Josh Im has known Hazel since college, where her zany playfulness proved completely incompatible with his mellow restraint. From the first night they met—when she gracelessly threw up on his shoes—to when she sent him an unintelligible email while in a post-surgical haze, Josh has always thought of Hazel more as a spectacle than a peer. But now, ten years later, after a cheating girlfriend has turned his life upside down, going out with Hazel is a breath of fresh air.

Not that Josh and Hazel date. At least, not each other. Because setting each other up on progressively terrible double blind dates means there’s nothing between them…right?

Christina Lauren is the pen name of two women who write together, and they are quickly becoming one of my go-to authors. Two of my go-to authors? Either way, I’ve read their last three books and loved them, and that includes this one.

This is a smart, funny and completely irresistible romance. These characters are brought to life with such impact that I feel like I could run into either of them tomorrow. And wish that I would! Hazel is larger than life, a joy to be around unless, perhaps, you are on the receiving end of her lack of filter. Even then, she is so kind and so honest I don’t see how anyone could get angry with her. When she decides that Josh should be her best friend, he has no choice but to be swept into her orbit.

Josh is Korean, and his heritage is brought into the story in a gentle manner that really adds to the story. Their dual blind dates lead from one catastrophe to another, until they finally realize that they are meant to be together. But it’s the journey to get to that point that is a wonder to read.

I laughed out loud quite a bit and just couldn’t wait for their happy ending. There are some explicit sex scenes which work with the story but it is the sweet romance that really is the draw here. Another excellent read from the Christina Lauren duo and one of my favorite reads this year.

DIRTY DANCING AT DEVIL’S LEAP by Julie Anne Long

Hellcat Canyon Series, Book 3

From the publisher:

One of Amazon’s Best Romances of September

A 2017 RT Reviewer’s Choice Nominee for Best Book of the Year and Reviewer’s Choice Nominee for Best Contemporary Love and Laughter

She was a naive country girl. He was a billionaire’s spoiled son. He was her first crush, her first heartbreak…and now her sworn enemy.

As Avalon Harwood’s fortunes soared, Maximilian “Mac” Coltrane’s plummeted, and he had to fight his way back to where they both began: Hellcat Canyon. Now Mac and Avalon will play dirty—in more ways than one—to get what they each want: the glorious old abandoned Coltrane mansion. But when Avalon snaps the house up at auction, she discovers there’s something awfully familiar about the extremely hot caretaker…

Mac might have a heart of stone, and the abs to match, but Avalon—the dazzling girl whose heart was always too big and too reckless for her own good—was always his Kryptonite. And just like that, the stakes change: suddenly they’re fighting not just for a house, but for a magic they tasted only once before and never since—long ago, with each other, at Devil’s Leap.

This is one of those series that I read completely out of order. I don’t even remember where I started but this is the last book that I hadn’t read so now I’m sad to say that I’m done…unless there will be another one? One can only hope!

I loved this series and the books are written in a way that you don’t have to read them in order and you still understand who these people are and what is going on, so thank you for that Julie Anne Long. Trust me, as someone who tends to read series in the order I find the books, this is a true talent.

Not only do you get a romance here, again of the childhood sweethearts are the only way to find your forever love trope, but you also get a house renovation. Fans of HGTV will enjoy that aspect as well.

Another terrific romance in a wonderful series.

Bridesmaids Behaving Badly, Book 1

From the publisher:
In this “perfect rom-com” (Refinery29), USA Today bestselling author Jenny Holiday proves that when opposites attract, sparks fly.
With her bridezilla friend on a DIY project rampage, bridesmaid Jane Denning will do anything to escape – even if it means babysitting the groom’s troublemaker brother before the wedding. It should be a piece of cake, except the “cake” is a sarcastic former soldier who is 100% wicked hotness and absolutely off-limits.
Cameron MacKinnon is ready to let loose after returning from his deployment. But first he’ll have to sweet talk the ultra-responsible Jane into taking a walk on the wild side. Turns out, riling her up is the best time he’s had in years. But what happens when the fun and games start to turn into something real?

I really enjoyed the second book in this series, It Takes Two, so I was happy to find the first one at my library. They do not need to be read in order (I didn’t) but I think it helps. After reading this one a lot was clarified about the second one that I didn’t even realize I needed to know. If that makes sense?
This story centers around one of the four friends the series is based on, this time it’s Jane. She is asked to keep an eye on the groom’s wild younger brother, and she does so with some trepidation. But as she gets to know him, and he her, everything changes, even the bridezilla at the heart of the wedding part of the story.
I loved these characters and their struggles, and Cameron especially suffers. But they both get their happily ever after, and it sure is fun watching them get there.

Crossroads Ranch, Book 2

Luke spotted Lily across a crowded bar and was instantly attracted. But so was his best friend, and when he moves in, Luke steps away. Things go from bad to worse when they marry a short time later. Luke is thrust into her company time and time again, and to protect himself acts like he can’t stand her. He never wanted either of them to know that he had feelings for her.

Lily ends up divorced, and thinks that Luke still hates her. But all of a sudden he is trying to protect her and that is confusing. They are forced to spend time together when she inadvertently ends up catering her ex’s wedding to a Food Network star, which could really make or break her career.

This was a good romance with some sizzling sex scenes and a lot of heart. The characters are well developed and enough of the back story is told to keep it all interesting and relevant without having had to read the previous book. But I do recommend reading it, it’s also a good read and a good introduction to the series. Another terrific cowboy romance, one of my favorite subgenres.

THE COTTAGES ON SILVER BEACH by RaeAnne Thayne

Haven Point, Book 8

I have seen Thayne books in the library and on romance award lists, but I’ve never read one until now. Yes, I’m starting a series with book 8. Thayne is skillful enough that I didn’t even notice.

Megan Hamilton runs an inn and lives in one of the cottages on site. Much to her chagrin, Elliot Bailey went online and rented the cabin next door to her for several weeks. There is no love lost between these two. Megan had dated his younger brother, but he was killed in an accident. Elliot was never very warm to anyone really, his nickname was Mr. Roboto.

Megan’s brother has been living under a cloud of suspicion for seven years since his wife vanished. Elliot is one of this small town’s people who believes he probably killed her, but he’s an FBI agent so he needs proof. He’s staying at the inn to finish work on his true crime book, heal up from a gunshot wound and wait out a suspension from the FBI, not even his family knows about that.

Turns out Elliot has always had a crush on Megan and she slowly thaws towards him as he is so kind and helpful. She has a lot going on in her life, not the least of which is helping her brother take care of his kids, but as long as Elliot doesn’t butt in she can handle it. And then he does.

Elliot asks his brother, the sheriff, for the file on the missing wife. Their father was sheriff when she disappeared, but he was never able to solve the case. Going through the file, Elliot finds evidence of a botched investigation and is determined to move it along. Megan isn’t very happy about that until Elliot points out that he may be able to clear her brother.

Lots of obstacles are in the way of this romance, but eventually they get there and Elliot solves the mystery of the missing wife as well. This was a sweet romance with a bit of a mystery, and should appeal to Debbie Macomber fans.

Romancing Manhattan, Book 1

From the publisher:

In New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Kristen Proby’s brand new Romancing Manhattan series, three brothers get more than they bargain for as they practice law, balance life, and navigate love in and around New York City.

Finn Cavanaugh is known for being a force to be reckoned with in the courtroom. He owns a successful law firm with his brother and brother-in-law in Manhattan. On the rare occasion that he has down time, he spends it at his home in Martha’s Vineyard. But when Finn’s troubled niece goes to stay with him for the summer in Martha’s Vineyard, he’s reluctant to take time off from work. That is, until he meets his beautiful new neighbor, London.

London Watson is a Tony Award winning actress on Broadway. When tragedy strikes her family, leaving her alone and injured, she flees Manhattan for Martha’s Vineyard. Hoping she can figure out how to pick up the pieces of her life, London is convinced that she’ll never be able to return to the stage. But when she meets the charming young girl next door and her sexy uncle, they soon lure London out of her shell as she finally begins to heal from the wounds of her past.

But when London feels confident enough to return to the spotlight, she’s dealt another devastating blow. Will the newfound love between London and Finn be enough to conquer all? Or will it be over before it has a chance to grow…?

I was surprised by how much suspense there was in this book, and it was very intriguing and enjoyable. London tragically lost her parents and her brother is the only family she has left, but he has been in and out of rehab and trouble for most of her life. Needless to say, they are not close and there is some resentment there when she inherits the bulk of their parents’ estate.
The romance, on the other hand, has its own form of suspense but it’s more of a will they or won’t they, as it should be. The characters were very well developed and the storyline completely engrossing. Highly recommended.
