Texas Rodeo, Book 2

From the publisher:

It took 32 seconds to end his career, but it only took 1 to change his life.

Thirty-two seconds. That’s how long it took for Delon Sanchez’s life to end. One minute he was the best bronc rider in the Panhandle and the next he was nothing. Knee shattered, future in question, all he can do is pull together the pieces…and wonder what cruel trick of fate has thrown him into the path of his ex, the oh-so-perfect Tori Patterson.

Tori’s finally come home, intent on escaping the public eye. It’s just her luck that Delon limps into her physical therapy office, desperate for help. All hard-packed muscle and dark-eyed temptation, he’s never been anything but a bad idea. And yet, seeing him again, Tori can’t remember what made her choose foolish pride over love…or why, with this second, final chance to right old wrongs, the smartest choice would be to run from this gorgeous rodeo boy as fast as her boots can take her.

“A sexy, engaging romance set in the captivating world of rodeo.”―Kirkus

“Illuminating…a standout in western romance.”―Publishers Weekly

This author was new to me, and her spin on the Western romance was interesting. Usually when there are cowboys and rodeos, the cowboy is hurt and retired and his family/girlfriend is glad and willing to do whatever it takes to keep them from that dangerous sport. But not here!

Delon is an up and coming star in the rodeo, expected to win it all until a bad accident sidelines him. He goes home to recuperate in this tiny Montana town, but when he checks in for his physical therapy, he is shocked to find the one who got away. Delon and Tori had a hot and heavy relationship for a long while, but it was always superficial. He’d show up and she was always happy to see him, but each thought the other was only interested in hooking up, when in fact it was quite the opposite. Once Tori disappeared on him, he had a one night stand with the woman who was his best friend. They both knew they didn’t belong together, but the night produced a son they both fiercely love. They are co-parenting and things are working out just fine. But when Tori shows up in town, all those feelings come rushing back.

Their history keeps them apart for sure, but as he improves, so does their relationship. I loved that Tori was also a rodeo rider; that was a nice twist! There are a lot of obstacles to overcome, but a happy ending is guaranteed. This is a slow-building romance with interesting characters and a lot of insight into the rodeo as a career, which I found really interesting. If you’re looking for a quick read, this isn’t that, but it is a very good read.

COUNTING ON A COWBOY by Sara Richardson

March 22, 2024

Star Valley, Book 3

From the publisher:

In this sizzling, sassy western romance, she’s been burned by too many cowboys—but can this rodeo rider convince her he’s worth the risk?

Retired SEAL Thatch Hearst never thought he’d put down roots, but four years in Star Valley as a bronc rider has him calling the town home. All he needs now is to earn some real money by competing in the big leagues. He’ll have his chance with the town’s upcoming rodeo days, but first he needs to improve his scores. Running out of time—and ideas—Thatch enlists the help of a local yoga instructor, hoping to gain an extra edge.

Lyric Valenza has worked with difficult clients, but this ruggedly handsome cowboy might just be her biggest challenge. Marrying a cowboy was the biggest mistake of her life, and after her divorce, she vowed she’d never again need a man. Only the more time she spends with Thatch, the more she realizes there’s a difference between needing and wanting someone—and this cowboy may just be the one person she doesn’t want to be without.

“Fans of emotional cowboy romance will not be disappointed.”―Publishers Weekly

I missed the first book in this series, Wishing on a Christmas Cowboy, but I read book 2. These do stand alone but the couples from the first two books are in this story, so probably best to read in order. Guess I have to go find the first book now!

The series centers around a few retired Navy SEALS, and this book is about Thatch Hearst. He loves the thrill he gets from bull riding, but if he is going to become a top tier bull rider, he needs some additional training. Yoga seems to be the way to go as it will make him more limber while riding. Thatch likes Lyric, the yoga instructor in this small town, but she’s turned him down a couple of times when he’s asked her out. But this is business, and she has no trouble with teaching him yoga one-on-one.

Lyric is wary of cowboys but she is happy to teach this cowboy yoga. As they spend time together, she gets to know him better. When two teens have a fight and he breaks it up, somehow she ends up telling people that they are dating. Thatch is fine with it, that was his goal after all, but he isn’t comfortable with lying to their friends. Those that know him also can see that something is going on with Lyric and Thatch, and eventually they realize they are no longer fake dating.

There is a secondary plot about women being abused, and I like how that was discussed and resolved here. The small town stepping up to help is heartwarming, the characters are interesting and compelling, and the love story is a good one. This was a good break for me from reality and is highly recommended.

HEART LIKE A COWBOY by Delores Fossen

December 29, 2023

Cowboy Brothers in Arms, Book 1

From the publisher:

He’s Emerald Creek’s hottest cowboy—and the one man she shouldn’t want

On the surface, Egan Donnelly is hometown hero material—top gun, commanding an elite fighter training squadron and ranching royalty. Inside, he feels like a fraud, convinced he’s responsible for his best friend’s death. At least he won’t let himself succumb to the heat between him and Jack’s widow, Alana. But now that she’s making regular trips to his ranch to care for his dad, that vow is getting harder to keep.

Alana Davidson isn’t just grieving her husband’s loss, she’s feeling betrayed over his secret infidelity. Wanting Egan makes things even more complicated. As a nutritionist, she can help Egan’s dad recover from his health scare, but it’s not so easy to get her own heart back on track. Because despite shared guilt and family pressure, she’s falling fast, and Egan is right there with her…

https://amzn.to/48AFBZh

This is the first book of a new series and it’s a good one. Set at the Donnelly family ranch in a small town in Texas, where the patriarch of the family has a heart attack. He survives, but is definitely weakened in body and soul. He has four sons, all in the military, but his oldest, Egan, takes leave for a month to come home and run the ranch. Egan figures his father will be back to himself quickly, but that doesn’t happen. His stepmother is a General and stationed overseas. She can only get away for a few days so it is up to Egan to make things work.

Alana is a nutritionist and is assigned to help out with the food side of getting Egan’s father heart healthy again. Egan has been avoiding her and her son, despite her being his best friend’s widow. Alana was hurt when Egan stopped coming around, but now that she sees him all the time she starts finding herself thinking about him. A lot.

Turns out Egan feels guilty about his friend’s death, and that’s why he’s been keeping his distance. Plus there is the tiny issue that he is strongly attracted to her and he feels guilty about that. It takes some time for these two to face their feelings and get to their happy ending, but it such a rewarding journey to get there. I loved these characters and the setting and I’m looking forward to the next book in the series.

Four Corners Ranch, Book 5

From the publisher:

A fresh start is all she wants this Christmas, but maybe a cowboy is all she needs…

It’s not the holiday season she’d envisioned. But moving back home with her son, Benny, is all single mom Elizabeth Colfax can do after her ex-husband’s infidelity left their life in pieces. A fresh start at Four Corners Ranch means Elizabeth’s dream career in equine therapy can become a reality, allowing her to share her love of horses with Benny. If only it didn’t also mean butting heads with Brody McCloud, the frustratingly attractive cowboy who sets sparks off inside her.

Brody doesn’t do complicated, and Elizabeth’s got more baggage than an airport. But there’s something about the woman that’s always gotten under his skin in a very welcome way. As the simmering tension between them grows harder to ignore, they’ll have to decide if their undeniable attraction can outweigh a shared loss of faith in forever. Maybe this Christmas, they can find a family worth fighting for.

In the bonus novella Wild Night Cowboy, can a cowboy with a dark past find his future with the one woman he shouldn’t touch?

I love me a good cowboy romance, and throw some Christmas into the mix, and I am one happy reader! Yates always writes good books, and this is a terrific addition to a really fun series. I started reading this last year with the Christmas book in the series, but the rest of the books are not holiday-centric, until this one. That said, they are all good and while I think it helpful to read in order, they all stand alone just fine. So if you want to start here, you will not feel like you missed a thing.

The setting is Four Corners Ranch, an unusual spread in that it is owned by four different families, each with their own type of business. This book is set on the McCloud family’s ranch, that specializes in equine therapy. Owned by a family of brothers, Gus, the eldest, hires Elizabeth Colfax to run the therapy side of the things. They offer her a small home on the property, and she is thrilled.

Elizabeth had a rough childhood, growing up in the foster care system. She met Carter in high school and never had another boyfriend. They married young and had a son, Benny, but by the time he was two years old, Carter had fallen in love with someone else – and she was pregnant. He dumped Elizabeth in a heartbeat and remarried the new baby mama. She was devastated, mostly because of her childhood of abandonment. She moves into a tiny apartment with Benny, and her ex blows off most of his weekends with his son over the next several years to concentrate on his new famlily. Finally, Elizabeth decides to do something for herself and with the court’s approval, takes the job three hours away on the ranch.

There she meets Brody McCloud, one of the younger McCloud brothers and one of two that are still unmarried. There is a strong attraction between them, but they both fight it – until they can’t. Despite their wealth, the McCloud brothers grew up with an extremely abusive father, and a mother who was so abused that she left them all. Weirdly, Brody was the only son that his father never abused, and he has survivor’s guilt, among other issues.

As Brody and Elizabeth get to know one another, they both realize they are revealing things to one another that they have never spoken aloud before. Their relationship deepens, but Brody has long decided that marriage isn’t for him. He is a one-night stand sort of guy and very up front about it. Elizabeth decides to go for it anyway since she has no other dating experience, and once they end up in bed, all bets are off.

There are more than the usual hurdles here with all the trauma in their backgrounds, but these two fall in love, fighting it every second of the way. It was rewarding to see Elizabeth learn about sex, too – her limited experience with her ex left much to be desired. I loved watching these characters help heal one another and form a blended family. I was very sorry to turn the last page, and I’m looking forward to the next book in the series.

“The subtly Christmassy backdrop and folksy supporting characters up the charm factor. Longtime readers will be thrilled to revisit this small town with a big heart at the most wonderful time of the year.” Publishers Weekly

https://amzn.to/45GzWin

This was my first read in this series, and I wouldn’t have known it was part of a series – it stands alone beautifully. Miller writes a lot of contemporary westerns, which I love, and combined with Christmas made this a must read for me. It’s a short book with well defined characters that leap off the page, from Tessa to her daughter to Jesse, the cowboy/lawyer who falls in love with both mother and daughter.

Tessa was a foster child, and is determined to make it as a single mother. The baby daddy is a bit of a jerk, but was happy to sign over his rights. His stepmother, on the other hand, takes it upon herself to try and get custody of the baby. The evil stepmother has a ton of money and influence, so Tessa figures she won’t stand a chance. She hits the road, trying to stay one step ahead of the woman chasing her down. Until she gets to the charming town of Painted Pony Creek.

The town feels welcoming to Tess. Before she knows it, she has a job and a place to live, and all the support a single mother could use. When she gets a custody demand, she turns to Jesse, who is only too happy to help her. There is a strong attraction there but Tessa isn’t looking for a relationship, not while she has to stay one step ahead of the stepmother. But it’s hard not to want to stay in this small town filled with caring people who seem to have her back. Not to mention Jesse, who seems to have her heart.

I really enjoyed this sweet romance. It’s a lovely read set during the Christmas holiday, without being preachy. I might have to go find the earlier books in this series.

BETTING ON A GOOD LUCK COWBOY by Sara Richardson

July 14, 2023

Star Valley, Book 2

From the publisher:

A former SEAL and his best friend’s widow find that the path of healing leads to forbidden feelings in this emotional western romance for fans of Maisey Yates and Jennifer Ryan!

For widow Tess Valdez, there are two things keeping her husband’s memory alive: her daughters and the ranch he loved. And Tess has thrown herself into caring for both. But when the wild horses that roam her land are threatened, Tess seizes the opportunity to become their advocate—and finds a new purpose that is hers alone. She expects resistance from some of the locals, but what she doesn’t anticipate is needing the one man she can’t have by her side…

No one understands Tess’s pain better than SEAL Silas Beck. He lost his best friend on the battlefield, and he’s spent every day since living up to the promise he’d made Jace to take care of the family he left behind. Falling for Tess was never supposed to happen, and Silas knows he should leave for both of their sakes—but he can’t say no when she asks him for one last favor. Even if staying means confronting feelings they’d both rather ignore . . .

“This is a must-read for cowboy romance fans.”—Publishers Weekly

https://amzn.to/3JRQ8oF

I’ve read many of Sara Richardson’s books and enjoyed them all, but somehow I miss books in every series. I need to pay closer attention! This is the second book of a series, and I have the first book but haven’t read it yet – but I will.

This is a good cowboy romance with a strong storyline besides the romance – saving wild mustangs. In this small ranching town, Tess is shocked to learn that some of her neighbors are killing the wild horses. Tess is a widow whose husband was a Navy SEAL. His friends and fellow SEALs have returned to town and have a construction company. When Tess finds an injured mustang and Silas, her husband’s best friend, helps bring the horse back to the ranch so he can heal.

Silas has strong feelings for Tess but thinks she wouldn’t be interested. Until they have a one-night stand. There is a lot of chemistry there but Tess thinks they shouldn’t let anyone know and that pisses Silas off. Nevertheless, he’s on board to help with the injured animal and helps her try and rally the town to stop hurting these horses. Most of the ranchers agree except one…

Meanwhile, Silas thinks he’s not good enough for Tess and decides to re-up with the SEALs. Tess finds out who is shooting at the horses, and things heat up between Silas and Tess. There are a lot of hurdles before these two can find their happy ending, and I couldn’t put the book down until everything was resolved. This is another good read from a terrific author.

ALWAYS HER COWBOY by Addison Fox

June 23, 2023

Rustlers Creek, Book 3

From the publisher:

Back in Rustlers Creek, one cowboy discovers that a lifelong feud could become his forever romance…

Charlotte Wayne has detested Chance Beaumont since the fourth grade. Her bickering with the big, rugged cowboy has become legendary around their small Montana town. But little does anyone know, Charlotte’s animosity masks unspoken feelings… because underneath it all, Chance is the only man who ever truly claimed her heart.

Chance has spent his whole life in Rustlers Creek, but he’s always been on the outside looking in. He needs to focus on keeping his ranch afloat amid the massive debt left by his late father, and the feelings he harbors for Charlotte don’t make it any easier. She’s ranching royalty and he’s perpetually scrubbing mud off his boots. It’s safer to push her away than hope for something he can never have.

When a business opportunity forces Charlotte and Chance to work together, they share a heated moment in each other’s arms. The simmering attraction they’ve fought for years can no longer be ignored, but will Chance’s doubts stand in the way of their happiness? Or will he finally declare his love and prove to Charlotte that he’s always been her cowboy?

“Steamy sex scenes… Charlotte’s loyalty, however, is admirable and Chance’s big heart shines through all the drama. It’s a worthy addition to the series.” — Publishers Weekly

https://amzn.to/445ZvZI

This was my first time reading this author, so here I am again, starting a series completely out of order. I don’t think it mattered much, as I didn’t realize it was part of a series when I read it! There were no weird gaps or references to things I didn’t know about, or if there were, I didn’t notice, so kudos to Ms. Fox. Well done.

Chance and Charlotte grew up together and always had a special closeness. But Charlotte is the daughter of the most successful rancher in this small town, and Chance’s father was a bad businessman and a terrible father. Chance inherits a debt-ridden ranch and doesn’t feel worthy of Charlotte, no matter how much they adore one another. Men and their foolish pride make up many male protagonists in romance novels, and probably in life, for that matter.

Charlotte is a strong, smart young woman, and even though this is a chauvinistic culture she is working in, she is nonetheless taken seriously because she works hard at it. I really liked how the idea of using drones for land surveying was introduced here; it made the book seem really up-to-date, at least in regards to ranching. But she still has to deal with small-town gossip, and that’s never fun.

When Chance finds out his land is worth way more than the debt his father ran up, you would think he may feel like things could work out with Charlotte, but it still takes a long time for him to get there. I really liked that money wasn’t the cure-all, it lent some realism to the story. I loved how connected I felt to these characters and couldn’t help but want them to find their happy ending. It was a struggle to get there, but it was all worth it in the end. If I can find the earlier books in this series in my library’s ebook collections, I’ll be back with more reviews. Meanwhile, I’m adding Addison Fox to my must-read list.

Spotlight Review: THE PROSPECTOR’S ONLY PROSPECT by Dani Collins

April 4, 2023

From the publisher:

After eight days in a cramped stagecoach, divorcée Marigold Davis already regrets her decision to come to Denver City to marry. She certainly didn’t realize she’d signed up for mosquitoes, mud, and scores of rough men eyeing her like a hot meal on a cold day. But with her life in Kansas all but incinerated, Marigold needs a husband. Even if she’s not the bride that gold prospector Virgil Gardner is expecting…

Virgil Gardner has a reputation as a grumpy hard-ass, and he’s fine with it. He’s also no fool―this is not the woman he agreed to marry. It takes a tough-as-nails woman to survive the harshness of a Rocky Mountain gold claim, and this whiskey-eyed, gentle beauty is certainly not the type. Now it’s just a matter of how quickly she’ll quit so he can find a wife who will stick. Someone who can care for the only thing he values even more than gold–his children.

But Marigold isn’t about to give in. Cramped in a one-room shack. Berry picking turned into a bear escape. Or cooking for an entire crew of bottomless pits. She’s got more grit than most. And just when Virgil starts to realize his replacement bride might be the treasure he’s been looking for, an unannounced guest arrives…to change everything.

“Collins mines the setting for both danger and humor, providing the perfect backdrop to this sensuous romance. Readers won’t want to put this down.” –Publishers Weekly, starred review

https://amzn.to/3LV52fV

I love cowboy romances, and this historical story is a good one. Set in the Kansas territory long before statehood, Virgil Gardner runs a gold mining operation. His wife is gone, leaving him with three children – two of whom are his. He takes care of all of them as best as he can, but he needs a wife, so he advertises for one.

The woman who shows up, Marigold, is actually the sister of the woman he agreed to marry. Virgil is a good man, albeit short-tempered and suspicious of most people, especially women. He cannot abide liars or cheats and feels like he was taken advantage of by this woman. He agrees to allow her to be his housekeeper but takes marriage off the table. Marigold loves children and is educated, so she is happy to take on her new role. She has never lived under such rugged conditions, and there is a definite learning curve. But she enjoys the children and even becomes friendly with the men working for Virgil, much to his displeasure.

Virgil is also surprised to find that he is drawn to the sassy woman and isn’t quite sure what to do about it. Eventually, they realize they have a strong physical attraction, which surprises Marigold – she had a horrible marriage, yet something about Virgil is warming her heart. Virgil and Marigold’s relationship blows hot and cold, and the men are all seeing more to it than they are. Just when you think everything is finally going to work out, there is a wrench thrown in the works that causes a massive setback. But no worries, a happy ending is just around the corner.

The historical aspects of this book were really interesting, and seeing how people lived under such extreme conditions was also fascinating. I liked these characters a lot, and this was a really good story. If you like historical westerns, this is a good one. The romance is just the icing on the cake!

This series was my first time reading Delores Fossen. According to Amazon she has written 239 books, and no, that’s not a typo. I think they may be counting each type of publication as a book – so the paperback, the audiobook, and the Kindle version would count as three books. Her author description says she’s sold over 140 novels, so either way, that’s a lot of books! It looks like she wrote a lot of those short Harlequin romances, and I don’t generally read those. I’m just glad I found her now – better late than never!

I actually read this series in order, but there is another book that came out in November that I haven’t found yet; Mornings at River’s End Ranch is book 4 of the Last Ride, Texas series and my library doesn’t have it. Yet. I requested they purchase it though, so hopefully, I’ll get it soon. Then in March, A Texas Kind of Cowboy, book 5, comes out. I already got the review copy, but I’m waiting to read it until I get book 4. There are a few more books coming out in 2023 so even more to look forward to! I do love a good Western/Cowboy/Rancher romance, and this series is terrific. There is a lot of drama with these well-developed characters, so I couldn’t help but care about them.

Even though I read these in order, they can all stand alone pretty much. There is a bit of overlap, it is a series after all, but nothing that can’t be understood. I have read other series out of order, and often you just know there are missing pieces of the story, but happily, that is not the case here.

These books are on the sweet side of romance with a lot of angst until the happy ending, but there is also a bit of heat. If you want a bit of sex rather than the complete lack of it in inspirational type romances, but don’t want tons of graphic sex, these books may be perfect for you. I read all across the heat index, but sometimes when it is one sex scene after another, or extremely graphic sex scenes, I just end up feeling like a voyeur, and I don’t enjoy those books as much. I guess I like a modicum of restraint, but not too much! I think Fossen finds a happy medium, at least in this series.

I am really looking forward to the next book, and I highly recommend this series.

The Princes of Texas, Book 1

From the publisher:

A Texas Prince Meets His Match…

After a childhood of living in foster homes, Ella Kendall has exactly three things to her name: A dog, a pig, and the rundown house she just inherited. Luca may not remember her from high school, but she definitely remembers him. He is as seductive as he was then, but Ella isn’t about to fall for his flirtingShe recognizes a playboy cowboy when she sees one.

Luca knows Ella has learned the hard way to trust no one but herself. Yet the closer he gets to Ella, the more he wants to be the only one she leans on. Because Ella is the only woman for him, and he wants to be the man who finally gives her the home she truly deserves.

I do love cowboy romances, and this was a good one that I missed – it came out in 2019. Luca Prince is the second son of a family that owns one of the largest ranches in Texas, near San Antonio. Ella had a big crush on him in high school, but they ran in completely different circles. But at the high school dance, they danced together and he kissed her, and she never forgot. But he did.

Luca has been living the rich playboy life, partying all over the world, and dating supermodels, but never more than twice. His dyslexia causes his mother great disappointment, and instead of getting him help, he was shuffled from school to school with family donations getting him through school. He graduates pretty much illiterate, and very much embarrassed about it himself.

Ella has been in foster care for most of her life, and all she’s ever wanted is a home. When the grandmother she barely knew dies, she leaves her broken-down farmhouse to Ella. It comes with a few wild horses, a pig, and a dog, all of whom adopt Ella. She can barely feed herself but she shares what she can with her menagerie. She’s working part-time as a hostess in a restaurant in this small town and is trying to start up her own accounting business. She has a couple of clients but desperately needs more.

When Luca sees Ella, he is really drawn to her. She’s no supermodel hidden under a ton of makeup and hair extensions; instead, she is naturally pretty and that is very appealing. Ella knows she isn’t good enough for Luca, and she keeps her heart walled off for sure. But they start dating, even if she won’t call it that, and she falls really hard for him. Determined to keep her distance, she pushes him away as much as she can.

Luca inherited a couple of thousand acres of land that is all used up. His best friend is an environmental lawyer, and together they form a foundation to try and bring the land back to the way it was. Luca and Ella keep non-dating and sleeping together until her best friend (Stacy, of all the names in the world) gets into some trouble and Ella feels like she needs to help her.

This is a small-town romance with interesting characters who have a lot of baggage. It seems almost impossible for them to reach their happily ever after, but they do. This was a quick read with a few steamy scenes and lots of swoony romance, but with some emotional depth, too. Now I’m trying to find the next two books in this trilogy.
