Chicago Stars, Book 10

From the publisher:

#1 New York Times bestselling author Susan Elizabeth Phillips returns with the next book in her Chicago Stars series where a successful sports agent and the sister of his biggest client engage in a take-no-prisoners battle of the sexes.

Take one hard-driving sports agent…

Throw in a failed chocolatier…

And her superstar football player brother…

Add a quirky pink and purple food truck…

Then, to really screw things up, mix in a very unfortunate murder.

Brett Rivers is the hottest sports agent in the business—fast and furious, swift and deadly. Failure? Not an option.

Rory Garrett is—let’s be honest—a disaster. She has a big heart, an empty bank account, a passion for making exquisite chocolate, and a huge inferiority complex from living in the shadow of Brett’s most important client, her football legend brother.

Brett and Rory should never have met, and they absolutely, positively should never have had to deal with the consequences of one stupid, drunken night…one disastrous lie…one career in jeopardy…one missing football player…and a very dead body.

It’s going to get messy…and dangerous…and heartbreaking…and sexy. To Rory, Brett represents skewed values and a devious mind. To Brett, Rory is forbidden fruit, off limits, do not disturb, and no entry—definitely no entry.

A woman who has succeeded at nothing and a man who’s succeeded at everything confront the challenge of their lives as they struggle with themselves and each other. When it comes to love—what price are any of us willing to pay to be simply the best?

“The queen of the football romance is not Taylor Swift. It’s Susan Elizabeth Phillips.”—Wall Street Journal

https://amzn.to/3OBHP2V

Susan Elizabeth Phillips started this series in 1994! She is credited with creating the first sports romance, or the first football romance, depending on who you ask. Either way, she’s been doing this for a long time, and doing it well.

If you are not familiar, the Chicago Stars are a fictitious football team, and this book centers around their star quarterback’s sister, Rory, and his agent, Brett – and it has a touch of suspense when that quarterback is arrested for the murder of his ex-girlfriend. But that’s a secondary plot line; this is a romcom at heart.

Rory is a wannabe chocolatier with some money troubles. She lost her mother when she was a young child and never really got along with her stepmother, especially after Clint was born. Then she lost her father, too. Clint was the golden child, and they are not close either. She won’t take money from either of them and is struggling to make a living. She bought a food truck with a partner, hoping to make enough selling store-bought candy to upgrade the truck with air conditioning, among other things. But the partner takes all the candy and disappears, leaving Rory with a $2000 fine from the city and nothing to sell.

Rory is somewhat friendly with her neighbor, who is a beautiful young woman determined to marry rich. When she starts dating Rory’s brother, her protective instincts kick in and she tries to warn him. But he’s in love, bought the ring, and Rory has visions of a brother marrying a gold digger without a prenup. Since he won’t listen, she tells the girlfriend that her brother is a gambler one step away from losing his job. When the girlfriend ends up dead on Clint’s patio, he is assumed to be the murderer.

Meanwhile, Rory is at a party where she has a one night stand with a super hot guy, except when he takes off early the next morning, he leaves $500 in cash on the dresser. Incensed, she finds him, but they quickly realize they have entered no man’s land. He thought she was a call girl, and she thought he was an athlete. But Brett is Clint’s agent, and Rory is his sister, and there is an unwritten but very strong rule about screwing around with the client’s family.

Rory is nothing like any woman Brett has ever been with. This is a guy who is on call basically 24/7 for his mega-successful clients, and is a workaholic, which is also why he’s so successful. But he can’t stop thinking about her, and when Clint is arrested, they start working together, trying to prove his innocence. The cops took the easy way out by arresting the homeowner/ex-boyfriend. Rory runs down one lead after another but gets nowhere fast. And Brett is always one step behind her, helping out when he can. Their chemistry is off the charts, but she knows he is a player and he can’t even understand his own fascination with Rory.

Everyone gets their happy ending, but it is so much fun getting there. SEP is in fine form with this story – there are lots of laughs, some steamy scenes, and the touch of suspense ratchets things up even more. This series does not need to be read in order, each book operates as a standalone. Highly recommend to readers who enjoy sports romances – SEP is the Queen for good reason.

BLOG TOUR!

The Influencer Series, Book 3

From the publisher:

A grumpy lobster fisherman tosses a fashion influencer’s impeccably curated life overboard in the next romantic comedy from international bestselling author Amy Lea.

In a last-ditch effort to rescue her brand from the brink of irrelevance, Boston fashion influencer Melanie Karlsen finds herself in a rural fishing village on the east coast of Canada. The only thing scarier than nature itself? The burly and bearded bed-and-breakfast owner and fisherman, Evan Whaler—who single-handedly disproves the theory that Canadians are “nice.”

After a boating accident lands Evan unconscious in the hospital, Mel is mistaken for his fiancée by his welcoming yet quirky family, who are embroiled in a long-standing feud over the B&B. In a bold attempt to mend family fences, Mel agrees to fake their engagement for one week in exchange for Evan’s help with her social media content.

Amid long hikes and campfire chats, reeling in their budding feelings for each other proves more difficult by the day. But is Mel willing to sacrifice her picture-perfect life in the city for a chance at a true, unfiltered love in the wild?

“Lea’s talent for writing complicated but ultimately likable characters is on full display as things between Melanie and Evan become more and more comically disastrous before they start to get better, and her expert knack for comedy makes this story a standout. This last chapter in Lea’s Influencer series is a heartwarming wrap-up with a strong sense of place and hilarious side characters. A sweet conclusion to a swoony contemporary romance trilogy.”—Kirkus (starred review)

“Lea tugs heart strings in her final Influencer romance… Lea handles these heavy themes with grace, never allowing them to overpower the fun, or vice versa. Readers will both laugh and cry.”—Publishers Weekly

“Snarky bickering between the main characters makes for enjoyable dialogue, and the romantic development is wonderful despite Melanie and Evan’s opposing personalities and different backgrounds… Lea’s final “Influencer” novel is a fabulous rom-com brimming with magnetic chemistry and delightful tropes.”Library Journal

https://amzn.to/3uxFfEg

Much to my surprise, this is the final book of a trilogy, and I had no idea reading it that I was missing anything. It took me a little while to get into this, but once I did, I couldn’t put it down. Turns out I read the second book, EXES AND O’S, and it even made my best books of 2023 list!

Melanie is a social media influencer in Boston, but she’s been losing followers and branding partners. When she is offered an opportunity to partner with a swanky resort in Nova Scotia, she jumps at the chance. But when she arrives, she is told they gave her the wrong date; they weren’t expecting her for another week and have no rooms available. It’s the height of tourist season, and it takes a while before she finally finds a place to stay, a bed and breakfast more than an hour away. Nonetheless, she books it through Airbnb, but when she arrives, things are not off to a great start.

The big grumpy guy, Evan, who greets her, tells her she is mistaken; they are not open for business. As they argue, his sister Lucy turns up, takes matters into her own hands, and gets Melanie situated. But the B&B is a mess, with all sorts of projects going on, and a lot more fixing up is needed. But it’s a bed, and she needs one.

The constant bickering between Melanie and Evan takes a turn when he agrees to take her whale-watching out on his boat. But when he falls overboard and loses consciousness, Mel is beside herself. He is rescued, and she goes with him in the ambulance to the hospital, with no way to contact any of his family. At the hospital, things go a bit “While You Were Sleeping” when the only way they will let her in is by telling them she is Evan’s fiancée. Eventually his family shows up en masse, and they are thrilled to meet her. She doesn’t have to heart to tell them she isn’t really engaged to Evan, and when his sister begs her to keep the secret for another day, the guilt lets her agree.

That day turns into a week, and it also turns into a bit of a family reunion for Evan’s family. There had been a major falling out between his mother and aunt, but they pulled together to help Evan and his fiancée. The more time Evan and Mel spend together, the more they realize they have feelings for one another, but Mel has to get back to the resort and then home to Boston. Evan is a lobster fisherman, so he can’t leave. They are in a bit of a pickle – first, Mel decides to blow off the resort and spend another week with Evan. But she still has to return home, and just when you think that’s that, they find a way to make it work and get their happy ever after. Lots of fun, snarky dialogue, some heat, and an ensemble cast of terrific secondary characters make a good read. Now I must find the first book in this series, Set on You! Read an excerpt below.

THE CATCH Nonexclusive excerpt

“Put me down! My underwear is showing,” I demand as a gust of wind hits my ass cheeks. At least I’m wearing a cute lace thong.

“Rest assured, I’m not looking,” he mutters as I flail like an eel the entire ascent up the staircase. He doesn’t put me down until we’re outside my bedroom.

“I’m taking a star off your Airbnb review for manhandling,” I warn as he attempts to steady me against the wall just as Lucy passes by with a mini garbage can.

“Double bagged. Just in case. Looks like she might need it,” she says, giving Evan a troubled look as she turns to get out of my vicinity. “Sorry, I’m out. I don’t do puke. Night, guys.”

“I won’t puke. I’m feeling fan-tas-tic!” I shout after her with unfounded confidence. I push the door open the tiniest crack, revealing the disaster I left my room in. My cheeks flush with embarrassment. I’m a secret slob—someone who looks neat and tidy to others but is most comfortable in my own chaos (when no one’s looking).

“I can take it from here,” I assure Evan, righting myself.

His expression is quizzical. “No. You can barely stand.”

“I’m great. You can retire to your underground candlelit lair now.” I take an eager stride into my room, which to me was pretty smooth, but apparently I’m useless.

He leads me to the bench at the foot of the bed, where I proceed to topple face-first into the mattress, legs spread like a mannequin. The compromising position isn’t lost on me.

“I feel the need to warn you, I have some pretty lethal hair spray. Just as effective as bear mace, according to Cosmo,” I say, voice muffled by the mattress.

“What are you gonna do? Blind me with it?” he asks, bending over to retrieve it from under the bed.

“If you try anything, I’ll have no choice.”

“You don’t have to worry about that, Mel.” He softens his tone considerably, which is comforting. I’m pretty sure this is the first time he’s ever referred to me by name.

Any lingering appreciation is short lived when he jabs my shoulder without an ounce of delicacy. I must have drifted out of consciousness for a minute or two, because when I open my eyes again, Evan is placing a garbage bin next to me.

“It’s right beside the bed if you need it,” he says slowly, like I’m a small child. “Do you need me to ask Lucy to help you change? A glass of water?”

“No. I’m perfectly fine,” I mumble, flopping over onto my side. He’s weirdly attractive from a horizontal perspective, and I don’t like it one bit.

He watches me for a couple of peaceful breaths before abruptly pivoting on his heel. “This is going in your Airbnb guest review, by the way.”

I glare at him, blowing at the hair stuck to my lip gloss. “The intoxication? Or my veiled threat?”

“Both. Mostly the drunk part. I did warn you about the Screech,” he reminds me, hands flexing at his sides.

“It wasn’t the Screech. Your friends were the ones pouring shots down my throat. Who am I to deny Canadian hospi-taly?”

He cocks his head. “Hospitality, you mean. And you’re wasted.”

“Perfectly sober,” I mumble, sliding under the covers without taking my shoes off.

“Wears shoes in bed. Another star off,” he mutters.

“Mean host. One and a half stars off,” I retort, squeezing my eyes shut when the room starts to spin.

“Scratched the shit out of me with those claws. Minus two stars,” he says, pretending to rub a hand over his shoulder. I definitely scratched him while holding on for dear life as he hauled me up the stairs.

“Hey, I paid a lot for these nails.”

Despite my questionable eyesight in my current state, I’m pretty sure I catch his lips draw upward into the tiniest smile before my eyes close.

THE WORST BEST MAN by Lucy Score

February 16, 2024

From the publisher:

From the #1 New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of Things We Left Behind

The bride is a doll. The groom is the perfect gentleman. But the rest of the wedding party? They’re the stuff of nightmares. Rich? Check. Vapid? Double Check. Entitled? Not enough checks in the world. And the Best Man? More like the Worst Man.

But Maid of Honor Franchesca Baranski takes her duties seriously. Kidnapped groom? She’s got this. Rude attendees? You just watch her handle them. So a Best Man with a big attitude and an even bigger…checkbook? Yeah, there’s no way she’s going to let that pretentious, judgmental jackhole ruin her best friend’s wedding. No matter how sexy he is. (Well, that’s the plan anyway…)

Aiden Kilbourn doesn’t do long-term relationships. He’s busy ruling the business world, and has yet to find a woman he can tolerate for longer than a month, two at the outside. Conquering the unconquerable is basically his bread and butter. And he hasn’t met a challenge that he can’t win. But Franchesca Baranski? This smart-mouthed girl from Brooklyn may just be his downfall.

https://amzn.to/3wlPiN0

I’ve read several Lucy Score books lately and thought this was a newer one, but it turns out it’s only a newer publisher. It looks like it was originally released in 2018, probably self-published. But like I tell people who are looking for a new book, if you haven’t read it, it’s new to you!

Franchesca Baranski, AKA Frankie, is a Brooklyn born, curvy brunette whose best friend is getting married. The bride is lovely, but all her other attendants are wealthy, skinny, obnoxious blondes. The best man, Aiden Kilbourn, is your typical snotty billionaire, only interested in the blonde trophy on his arm for a week or two. And he cannot understand why he is so drawn to Frankie.

Frankie is smart, quick, funny, and is quite good at skewering Aiden, probably part of his attraction to her. She thinks he is gorgeous, but she is not looking for a one-night stand. As they spend time together sparring, they end up giving in to their sizzling chemistry. But the road to love is never easy, especially when there is class disparity and blonde roadblocks in the way.

This was a pretty good read – it held my attention, the characters were quirky enough to be interesting, and the sex was hot, but I really had to suspend my disbelief more than I like to buy some of the more outlandish plot points. I’ve enjoyed all of Score’s books, including this one, and look forward to whatever is coming next. She is an author to watch for me.

FINDING MR. PURRFECT by Codi Gary

February 9, 2024

From the publisher:

Full of cats, coffee, and charm, this laugh-out-loud, fake-dating romance between a brilliant baker and a charismatic commitment-phobe is the perfect treat for fans of Lyssa Kay Adams and Jasmine Guillory.

Frenemies + Fake Dating = Falling for the wrong person…for all the right reasons

Charity Simmons may have great taste in friends, felines, and fruit tarts, but if there’s one thing the baker and co-owner of Meow and Furever Cat Café knows, it’s that she has horrible taste in men. Case in point: Will Schwartz. He may be the best friend of her best friend’s boyfriend, but after their one night together, Charity is positive Will’s nothing but a womanizing charmer—despite his nice-guy persona and adorable, crooked smile. So why then did she pick him to pretend date to get her parents off her back about being single?

Will Schwartz may give relationships a hard pass, but he’s not about to say no to fake dating Charity. She’s brilliant, hilarious, and best of all, she’ll put an end to his mother’s interrogations about his love life. And maybe, after all this time giving him the cold shoulder, Charity will finally warm up to him.  But it’s not long before Will and Charity realize they got much more than they bargained for–and they’re freaking out. What if what they have isn’t make believe but the real, forever kind of love?

“The fake-dating trope and some feisty felines animate this effervescent sequel to Gary’s A Cat Café Christmas. Witty banter between the leads and cameos from the café’s mischievous kittens lace the heartfelt love story… Readers will relish this lighthearted romp.”  ―Publishers Weekly

https://amzn.to/3wfqvKv

This is the sequel to A Cat Café Christmas, which I didn’t know when I read this one -but I sort of wondered. The main characters, Will and Charity, are the best friends of a couple who think they are a good match. But Charity thinks Will is just a playboy, and he doesn’t know how to convince her otherwise. When they both end up at a resort together, they ignore one another until New Year’s Eve, when they create fireworks of their own. But morning comes around, and perspectives shift.

Charity owns a cat cafe and rescue operation with her best friend, a veterinarian. Charity bakes all the treats, and has applied to be on some reality TV baking show. If she wins, the money will certainly help expand their operation. She is in no mood for a meaningless fling; she feels like she deserves more.

Will is strongly drawn to Charity, but because of his family background, he fears relationships, mostly because of money. His parents weren’t good with it, and he is determined to keep his out of the clutches of any woman. But he can’t stop thinking about Charity.

There are a lot of hurdles here, but even more laughs along the way. This was a really fun read, especially if you like cats and baking as much as I do. I loved this lighthearted, fun, terrific, swoony read, and I’m going to hunt down A Cat Café Christmas!

CANADIAN BOYFRIEND by Jenny Holiday

February 9, 2024

From the publisher:

Fate brings together a ballet teacher and a hockey player in this big-hearted novel about second chances and taking risks by the bestselling author Entertainment Weekly calls the “master of witty banter.”

Once upon a time teenage Aurora Evans met a hockey player at the Mall of America. He was from Canada. And soon, he was the perfect fake boyfriend, a get-out-of-jail-free card for all kinds of sticky situations. I can’t go to prom. I’m going to be visiting my boyfriend in Canada. He was just what she needed to cover her social awkwardness. He never had to know. It wasn’t like she was ever going to see him again…

Years later, Aurora is teaching kids’ dance classes and battling panic and eating disorders—souvenirs from her failed ballet career—when pro hockey player Mike Martin walks in with his daughter. Mike’s honesty about his struggles with widowhood helps Aurora confront some of her own demons, and the two forge an unlikely friendship. There’s just one problem: Mike is the boy she spent years pretending was her “Canadian boyfriend.”

The longer she keeps her secret, the more she knows it will shatter the trust between them. But to have the life she wants, she needs to tackle the most important thing of all—believing in herself.

Heartwarming, engaging… the witty banter and outrageous situations keep the tone upbeat even as characters face challenging situations.”―Library Journal

“Readers looking for emotionally intelligent romance will want to snap this up.”―Publishers Weekly

https://amzn.to/3OBHP2V

This book has such an interesting premise, but for me, it went sideways. Aurora was brought up to be a ballerina by a very pushy, ambitious single mom. When she was a young teen, she had no friends to speak of. Her peers thought she was aloof, and she often missed school for dance opportunities. She worked at a coffee shop at the Mall of America, and that was the only place she felt somewhat normal.

While at work, she meets two guys who were there for a high school hockey tournament. One of them, Mike, is very friendly and kind to her. Aurora turns that chance meeting into something more. She creates a fake boyfriend named Mike who is a hockey player from Canada. He’s a convenient excuse as to why she doesn’t socialize in high school and misses the prom. He also becomes her journal, in a manner of speaking. She writes him letters about her life and keeps them all in a binder.

Aurora gets into a prestigious dance school in New York City, but after two years, she decides to drop out. She is having panic attacks and anxiety, not to mention an eating disorder. Her mother is angry and disappointed, and Aurora can’t go home. She ends up in a small town teaching tap and jazz dance to kids. Her boss becomes her best friend, and she is content with her life. Until she meets Mike.

Mike is a professional hockey player who has been widowed, leaving him with a young daughter. The only normalcy left in her life is her dance classes, which she loves. As Mike is the one now taking her, he meets Aurora. Their relationship starts off slowly; neither is really looking for anything, and Mike needs help with his daughter more than a girlfriend. Turns out Aurora needs some help, too – her car is a broken-down mess, and the boyfriend who dumped her also left her on the hook for a two-bedroom apartment she cannot afford. Mike offers her a place to stay, her own floor in his very large home, and a car for her to use, and a job – helping out with his daughter. A nanny of sorts.

Mike goes back to his hockey career, which means a lot of travel, and Aurora is a big help, plus his daughter adores her. Things are going really well until Aurora and Mike fall into a real relationship that neither one is prepared for.

Here is where things go off the rails for me; at a fairly early point, she realizes that this Mike is the same Mike that she met all those years ago, but she never asks him or even mentions it. At one point, he starkly declares that he can’t abide liars, yet he lies to her several times. When Aurora finally tells Mike that she met him years earlier, he loses it. Then she gives him the binder of her letters, and that sort of resolves the situation.

I liked these characters and was definitely rooting for them, but their big obstacle just didn’t ring true to me; it seemed forced. I usually really like Jenny Holiday books and I did like this one, but that aspect of the plot just didn’t work for me.

Spotlight Review: THE BRIGHT SPOT by Jill Shalvis

February 6, 2024

The Sunrise Cove Series, Book 5

From the publisher:

New York Times bestselling author Jill Shalvis returns to Sunrise Cove with a heartwarming story about the choices we make and the love we let into our lives…

Luna Wright is a lot of things, but sweet and trusting isn’t on the list. However, she’s a sucker for the underdog and a hard-luck story. Adopted at birth, with scant knowledge of her biological family, she’s created her own inner circle, a motley crew which includes her bestie Willow, to help her run the struggling but charming Apple Ridge Farm.

With a farm-to-table café as well as a menagerie of rescued animals (complete with a baby goat who keeps escaping to the pantry to eat the secret stash of decidedly not organic potato chips), it’s the best home she’s ever known. But when the owner Silas, who they secretly call The Grinch, passes away, Luna discovers the farm is now under control of his investment manager, the enigmatic Jameson Hayes….and her. And that Silas had many, many secrets.

Now Luna’s carefully controlled corner of the world is threatened and she—along with some help from her friends—has to dig deep to find true strength and the real meaning of love and family.

“An easy-to-read, forced-proximity romance filled with quirky characters, strong—but flawed—women, and supportive men.” – Kirkus Reviews

https://amzn.to/4aJTJ4c

Shalvis is one of my favorite authors, and I’ve actually read this entire series in order! The latest is another excellent addition to the series.

Luna’s had a rough childhood, but landing this management job at Apple Ridge Farm is a dream come true. From the rescue animals to working with her best friend, Willow, to creating a family of sorts with all the staff, Luna has never been happier. The only slightly sore spot is her boss, Silas, who is a bit of a grump, but luckily, he rarely checks in. When he passes away, Luna is shocked to find out he left her half the farm. The other half was left to Jameson Hayes, the number cruncher.

That’s not the only shock though – it turns out that Silas was her grandfather and that he was supplementing the farm income as they were losing money hand over fist. Jameson promised Silas he would look over things for a couple of months and turn the farm around if at all possible. But first, he has to get along with Luna, who isn’t taking his suggestions very well.

If you enjoy the enemies-to-lovers trope, this is a good one. It was a heartwarming romance with a lot of drama along the way before the happy ending was reached, and I loved every page. These books all standalone so feel free to start here if you haven’t tried this series yet. Highly recommended!

THE SEVEN YEAR SLIP by Ashley Poston

February 2, 2024

From the publisher:

A New York Public Library Best Book of 2023

A Most Anticipated Book by Entertainment Weekly ∙ Harper’s Bazaar ∙ PopSugar ∙ Real Simple ∙ BookRiot ∙ and more!

An overworked book publicist with a perfectly planned future hits a snag when she falls in love with her temporary roommate…only to discover he lives seven years in the past, in this witty and wise new novel from the New York Times bestselling author of The Dead Romantics.

Sometimes, the worst day of your life happens, and you have to figure out how to live after it.

So Clementine forms a plan to keep her heart safe: work hard, find someone decent to love, and try to remember to chase the moon. The last one is silly and obviously metaphorical, but her aunt always told her that you needed at least one big dream to keep going. And for the last year, that plan has gone off without a hitch. Mostly. The love part is hard because she doesn’t want to get too close to anyone—she isn’t sure her heart can take it.

And then she finds a strange man standing in the kitchen of her late aunt’s apartment. A man with kind eyes and a Southern drawl and a taste for lemon pies. The kind of man that, before it all, she would’ve fallen head-over-heels for. And she might again.

Except, he exists in the past. Seven years ago, to be exact. And she, quite literally, lives seven years in his future.

Her aunt always said the apartment was a pinch in time, a place where moments blended together like watercolors. And Clementine knows that if she lets her heart fall, she’ll be doomed.

After all, love is never a matter of time—but a matter of timing.

https://amzn.to/3u3FeHZ

This was one of those books that I somehow overlooked last year, so when it showed up on some of the best books of the year lists, I dug around and found it on my Kindle. And here we are!

This is the sort of book I love - a good romance set in the publishing industry, with a touch of magic, or in this case, time travel. That is as close to sci-fi/fantasy as I usually get, and Poston does a bang-up job with it.

Clementine has inherited her beloved aunt’s apartment in New York City. Her aunt had always said there was something magical about the place, but it wasn’t until she found a good-looking man in her home that she started to suspect her aunt wasn’t lying. Iwan introduces himself and says he is subletting the apartment for the summer. But it isn’t this summer; it was a summer seven years earlier. A tiny bit confusing, at least for Clementine!

Her aunt had two rules:

1. Take off your shoes when you enter

2. Don’t fall in love in the apartment

Clementine starts to understand that second rule as they get to know one another. Strong feelings develop, but she never knows if Iwan will be in the apartment when she returns until she gets there. Then time shifts again to the present day, and Iwan is now an award-winning chef set to take Manhattan by storm in a new restaurant of his own. Clementine works for the publisher who is desperate to get his cookbook, sure to be a bestseller, but it seems like their past may get in the way.

This was a thoroughly enjoyable read, with interesting, well-developed characters and a plot line so good it should win over everyone. Highly recommend!

https://amzn.to/3ud98cI

This is the second book of the series set in the small Montana town of Coyote Canyon. This one centers on Ellen and Hendrix, sworn enemies for most of their lives. Ellen’s parents divorced when she was a young child, and her father quickly remarried a woman named Vicki. Shortly after they wed, her sister died, leaving her son Hendrix an orphan. Vicki took him in and raised him as her own. But her husband’s daughter, Ellen, was a different matter; she was a tough kid, and Vicki wanted nothing to do with her. It comes out that she was jealous of her husband spending any time with his daughter, and he acquiesced to keep his wife happy.*

Fast forward many years, Ellen has moved into her grandparents’ home that she inherited in Canyon Creek and started her own well drilling company - in direct competition with her father’s company. Her goal is to put him out of business, revenge for abandoning her and her mother. Ellen’s mother is none too stable, and is constantly needing bailing out, adding more stress to Ellen’s life.

When Ellen steals a job out from under Hendrix, he is livid. In retaliation, he offers her one and only employee a job with a huge increase in salary. Things couldn’t be any worse between these companies and people, but when Ellen’s employee puts the screws to her to pay him or he’s leaving, she doesn’t feel like she has much choice. There is no way she can get the drilling done alone. But then he takes off on vacation, stranding her anyway, and shockingly, Hendrix steps in to help, feeling guilty about what he’d done. As they work together and get to know one another, everything starts to change.

There are a lot of family dynamics going on here, some of which really hit home for me. The enemies-to-lovers trope is beautifully and realistically played out here. This was a solid entry into this new series, and I can’t wait for the next book – luckily, I won’t have to wait long. It comes out February 20th, review to follow!

*My parents divorced when I was eight years old. My father flew to Mexico for a quickie divorce and came home a week later married to another woman. He didn’t abandon me or my brother, but she made my life hell, especially after I was forced to move in with them.

I was a hellion as a child, pretty much your basic parental nightmare, especially once I hit my teens and my mother couldn’t handle me anymore. I spent two and a half years living with my father, his wife, and her three children, and it took many years to recover. I had always suspected that his wife was jealous of me; I was my father’s favorite which made her crazy, but I couldn’t understand how a grown woman could be jealous of a child. It made no sense to me, but it finally came out right before my own wedding. We didn’t speak or have any kind of relationship for a few years until he wormed his way back in.

We had several hellish years before I finally found the strength to walk away from all the toxicity. My father was a sociopath, a narcissist, and if his lips were moving, he was lying. I’m not sure he even knew the difference between the truth and a lie; whatever suited him best was always his answer. His wife was another kind of monster. They are both dead and left behind a bunch of screwed-up children who have been squabbling over money for years now. I walked away from it all – and them all – about thirty years ago and never regretted it.

I think this was the first time I have seen a similar situation with the second wife jealous of the first wife’s child. I would hope it’s not a common problem, but I felt almost vindicated to see it here, if that makes any sense!

Spotlight Review: LAST CALL AT THE LOCAL by Sarah Grunder Ruiz

January 30, 2024

From the publisher:

Opposites attract when a free-spirited American singer-songwriter with ADHD teams up with a charming Irishman to revitalize his family’s pub in the next heartfelt romance from the author of Luck and Last Resorts.

Raine Hart is used to the challenges of living with ADHD. It’s why she ditched her life in Boston to busk around Europe as a traveling musician. No boss. No schedule. No one to disappoint but herself. But when a careless mistake in Ireland leaves her unable to perform, she sees no other option but to give up her nomadic life.

Since inheriting the Local, Jack Dunne has wanted to make the pub his own. But the baggage of running a family business and the intrusive thoughts that stem from his OCD make changing things a challenge.

Over a pint with handsome, tattooed Jack, Raine accidentally insults him and the pub. Instead of taking offense, Jack, impressed by her vision of what the pub could be, offers her a job bringing it to life.

But when Raine and Jack develop feelings for one another their opposite lifestyles won’t accommodate, it becomes clear the pub isn’t the only thing that needs reinventing. As the end of their business collaboration draws near, they’ll have to find a way past the limits they’ve placed on themselves or let go of a love that could last a lifetime.

With the clock ticking and time running out to win her dream job in Paris, Georgia begins to unravel some astonishing secrets that make her wonder if the true recipe for a charmed life might look—and taste—very different than she ever imagined.

“This warm romance sparkles with Irish charm and is filled with delectable banter. The leads are immensely lovable and thoughtfully crafted…Compassionate and completely charming.”—Kirkus (starred)

“Ruiz shines in this moving and adorable tale of neurodivergent love in a cozy Irish town…Ruiz handles her characters’ intrusive thoughts and exaggerated fears with uncommon grace and sensitivity and makes it clear throughout that, despite their anxieties, these two are perfect for each other.”—Publishers Weekly (starred)

“Readers will be drawn to Ruiz’s sweet romance about taking a chance on something and someone new.”—Booklist

“Ruiz (Luck and Last Resorts) writes sensitively about two people trying to thrive amid personal issues and the relief one feels in finding a kindred soul.”—Library Journal

An American singer-songwriter, Raine Hart, has learned to live with her ADHD by moving across the pond and busking her way through Europe. She lands in a pub in a small town in Ireland after she is robbed of everything – her guitar, her cell phone, everything she needs to make a living. She ends up in a discussion with a good looking man named Jack about the pub. He asks her opinion about it, and she is frank in her assessment. Then she finds out he is the owner and is mortified. Much to her surprise, instead of anger, she gets a job offer to make her vision for the pub a reality.

Raine needs to earn enough money to buy a new guitar – hers was irreplaceable. Jack gives her a place to stay – his apartment above the bar, while he stays with his brother. As they spend time together, they both recognize that they each have some issues; Raine with her ADHD, and Jack, with OCD. They learn to work together and no one is surprised when they develop feelings for one another. But Raine can’t stay in one place, and Jack can’t leave his family business.

This is a charming, witty read and the romance rings true. These two imperfect people find one another and manage to get to their happily ever after, and it is a joy to take that journey with them. Highly recommend!

TALULAH’S BACK IN TOWN by Brenda Novak

January 19, 2024

Coyote Canyon, Book 1

From the publisher:

Sometimes the past we leave behind leads us right where we belong.

Talulah Barclay doesn’t like complications. Unfortunately, they seem to love her. Fourteen years after leaving her fiancé at the altar, Talulah returns to her hometown of Coyote Canyon, Montana, to settle her great-aunt’s estate. As she’d feared, her “runaway bride” reputation is waiting right where she left it, and her ex’s best friend, Brant, isn’t about to let her slip by unnoticed.

Brant has always been a loyal friend, but Talulah’s decision to run isn’t the only thing he hasn’t forgotten. He remembers more about Talulah than he cares to admit. Vividly. And it’s increasingly difficult to ignore her now, especially when they find themselves in close quarters. Talulah has no plans to stay in town after she fixes up her aunt’s Victorian farmhouse, even if the unbridled sparks with Brant give her a good reason to linger. Besides, bailing on relationships is kind of her thing. But a lot has changed since Talulah last turned tail—maybe her heart has changed, too?

Coyote Canyon Series

Book 1: Talulah’s Back in Town
Book 2: The Talk of Coyote Canyon

This is the first book of a new series set in a small town in Montana. Talulah was engaged to be married, but left her groom at the altar and left town. Fourteen years later, she’s back to settle her great aunt’s estate and surprisingly, her ex is still not over her. But when his best friend, Brant, sees her, she knows she is in for a hard time. Her own parents left town shortly after the wedding debacle, and are now doing missionary work in Africa, her father’s dream. Her sister is very pregnant and Talulah is happy to help her out, but pretty much everyone else in town has been gunning for her all these years. Small towns, long memories…

Brant keeps running into Talulah and quickly realizes that the girl he had a crush on in high school is even more gorgeous now. He was able to get past his crush when his best friend started dating her, and there is plenty of anger over how she dumped him. but still, there is something more there. Even after she confesses she is a serial runaway bride, always committing until the last possible moment. Even after his best friend confesses he still loves her and refuses to move on. Fighting those feelings is exhausting, and eventually they both give in. But can Talulah commit to anyone? Is Brant “the one?” So much drama!

Luckily, Talulah is a very likeable character, so I couldn’t help but root for her to find her happily ever after. Brant has the kind of patience she needs in a man, and he is willing to wait for her. And wait he does. There are a lot of laughs along their journey, and of course, the happy ending.

Brenda Novak has become one my favorite authors, in the same realm as Debbie Macomber but maybe not as sugary sweet. Looking forward to the next book in the series!
