Texas Forever After, Book 1

From the publisher:

The new head coach is about to get schooled

A hero’s welcome awaits NFL bad boy Jackson Knight in Bishop Falls. The Texas town lives and breathes football, and they’re thrilled to have Jackson as their temporary high school coach while he rehabs his torn ACL—and his battered image. But one person isn’t rolling out the red carpet. Journalist Calla Dunne knows the damage football can do, and she’s not cutting the coach any slack. Jackson’s trained all his life to push through every obstacle stacked against him. But conquering Calla’s heart will take a fight like none he’s ever faced…to claim a reward sweeter than any prize.

Believe in love. Overcome obstacles. Find happiness.

This book stirred up memories for me. When my husband and I moved to the Dallas area in the early 1980s shortly after getting married, we drove past an enormous football stadium on the way to our rental house. Naturally, we assumed it was where the Dallas Cowboys played. We couldn’t have been more wrong—it was a high school stadium! That was our first introduction to the almost religious fervor surrounding high school football in the Dallas suburbs. Friday night games were community events where everyone showed up, whether they had kids on the team or not, whether they’d attended that school or not.

This book captures that same football obsession in the small Texas town of Bishop Falls, where football rules everything and the booster club holds serious power. Injured NFL star Jackson Knight is at a crossroads in his career. After tearing his ACL, he’s struggling through a difficult recovery, and his playboy reputation isn’t doing him any favors. His agent secures him a temporary high school coaching position, hoping to salvage both his career and his public image.

Enter Calla Dunne, a journalist at the local paper who secretly hates football—with good reason. She keeps her opinions to herself as she knows better than to challenge the town’s obsession. She covers football while dreaming of writing features instead.

Jackson’s arrival is marked by a parade in his honor, but Calla happens to overhear him on a phone call, desperately trying to wriggle out of the coaching job. From that moment, she’s skeptical. She doubts he’ll help the team or provide any positive influence. I particularly appreciated how the author addressed bullying among team members and showed Jackson genuinely rising to the challenge.

As Jackson struggles with his recovery and faces the possibility that his NFL days might be over, he begins to see how empty his life was before Bishop Falls. His growing connection with Calla forces him to reevaluate everything.

This enemies-to-lovers, small-town sports romance delivers on every level. The narrator brought excellent vocal variety to the audiobook, making the story truly come alive. This is the first book in a series, and I can’t wait to see what comes next.. If you loved “Friday Night Lights”, this is for you.

Lucky River Ranch, Book 1

From the Publisher:

Butting heads leads to knocking boots in this wildly sexy enemies-to-lovers, grumpy/sunshine, small town cowboy romance by Jessica Peterson.

One year on a Texas ranch.

One angry, ridiculously hot cowboy.

One clause in a will that changes everything.

Mollie Luck has run out of luck. When her estranged father unexpectedly dies, he leaves his massive cattle ranch to her―but not without a catch. To collect her inheritance, city girl Mollie will have to move back to the small-town Texas ranch she left as a child when her parents split and manage it for a full year.

Needing the money to invest in her company, Mollie resigns herself to moving to cowboy country. A girl’s gotta do what a girl’s gotta do.

But there’s one giant roadblock to her plan: the ranch’s grumpy foreman, Cash Rivers. Never mind how good he looks in his Wranglers and chaps; he’s rude, growly, and wants Mollie gone.

Working side by side in the Texas heat turns into moonlit nights, slow dancing cheek-to-cheek in dusty bars, and moments where the line between hate and hunger gets real blurry.

But Mollie’s stay in Hartsville is only temporary. And you know what they say about cowboys: They may break horses, but they also break hearts.

Cash is the first standalone book in the steamy, interconnected Lucky River Ranch series, perfect for fans of Elsie Silver and Lyla Sage.

Delicious tropes:
All the banter!
Grumpy x sunshine
Cowboy x city girl
Forced proximity
Enemies to lovers vibes
Small town charm

https://amzn.to/469dAtm

This was the perfect start to the Lucky River Ranch series—a compelling blend of heart, humor, slow-burn tension, and just the right dose of cowboy angst.

When Mollie’s estranged father dies, she unexpectedly inherits his massive Texas ranch and fortune, despite not having visited in over twenty years. There’s a catch: the will requires her to live on the ranch for a full year to claim the inheritance. That’s when things get complicated.

Cash Cole, the ranch’s loyal foreman, had always believed the land would be left to him. Mollie’s father had practically raised Cash and his four younger brothers after their parents died twelve years earlier. So when Mollie shows up, Cash is blindsided—and not exactly welcoming.

The enemies-to-lovers dynamic between Cash and Mollie sizzles from page one. He dismisses her as “city girl” and does everything possible to drive her away, while she stands her ground with wit, grit, and fierce independence, though she carries deep wounds from her complicated relationship with her father.

Her backstory adds emotional depth: after her parents’ divorce when she was small, Mollie moved to Dallas with her mother and rarely saw her father again, though he continued supporting her financially. Her mother’s bitterness toward the ranch and her father left Mollie with a tangled mix of resentment and confusion.

The inheritance isn’t just about money for Mollie—it’s about survival. She’s built a custom cowboy boot company with her best friend, funded initially by her mother’s investment. But now she desperately needs the inheritance to keep her dream business afloat.

Mollie’s journey of rediscovering the ranch becomes genuinely moving. She hasn’t ridden a horse in twenty years, but it comes back to her like second nature. She connects with the ranch hands, who welcome her warmly—everyone except Cash, of course. Watching these two wounded characters slowly understand each other, untangling their shared grief and hidden love, was deeply satisfying. Their sharp-tongued banter brought constant smiles, while their emotional moments felt authentically touching.

Thanks to my friend Nora for recommending this to me – I loved it!

Audiobook Sunday: SEXY FILTHY BOSS by Piper Rayne

October 5, 2025

Narration by Lynn Norris & David Brenin

White Collar Brothers, Book 1

From the author:

IHe’s the sexy alpha male in the corner office who goes through assistants faster than free donuts in the break room.

I’m the assistant who was chosen to cover for his last fire.

The owner of the company is clear – hook the biggest client in our firm’s history and there’s a partnership for him and a promotion for me. Stipulation – we do it together.

It doesn’t take a tarot card-reading psychic to figure out where our story is headed…late nights, trips out of town, and more than a few awkward moments filled with sexual tension.

No worries though. I pride myself on my willpower. I can totally ignore his sexy grin, his rock-hard body, and his dreamy brown eyes. I will not become the woman other women hate.

But it turns out that Enzo Mancini has a lot of layer,s and if I don’t stop peeling, I’m going to lose everything, including my dignity.

https://amzn.to/4mnwrpq

I’d nominate this book for Worst Title Ever, but the algorithm knew what it was doing when it recommended it to me—I’m a devoted Piper Rayne reader who’ll tackle anything they write. Despite being put off by the title, I gave it a chance and ended up genuinely enjoying it.

Annie works as an assistant at a male-dominated advertising firm, hoping to climb the corporate ladder. Her sweet but unhelpful boss keeps her stuck in a support role, making it impossible to prove her capabilities. Enter Enzo Mancini, a fellow ad executive notorious for burning through assistants at lightning speed. When his latest quits, Annie’s boss desperately asks her to fill in temporarily. Though reluctant to take on extra work—especially for someone like Enzo—she agrees.

Everything changes when Enzo includes her in his latest campaign for a diaper company. This potential account could be the firm’s biggest win and Enzo’s ticket to partnership. As they work together, their professional relationship evolves into something deeper.

Enzo is drop-dead gorgeous but emotionally unavailable, preferring one-night stands over relationships. However, working with Annie awakens unfamiliar feelings. His close-knit family adds another layer—their widowed mother desperately wants grandchildren, especially since her sister’s kids are already reproducing. The three single Mancini brothers hatch a plan to set up their baby sister, hoping for future grandbabies.

Though that matchmaking effort doesn’t quite succeed, Enzo and Annie’s connection intensifies. I loved Annie’s backbone—she refuses menial tasks and demands meaningful work, which Enzo genuinely respects. Their growing attraction builds naturally to its steamy conclusion, and based on the cover and title, you know these two will generate serious heat.

The family dynamics shine throughout. Enzo’s seamless integration into Annie’s family feels authentic, while his own family’s closeness adds warmth to the story. A running gag about the brothers settling everything through Rock, Paper, Scissors—with Enzo always losing—provides perfect comic relief.

The dual narration elevated this audiobook significantly, with both narrators bringing their characters to vivid life. It was compelling enough to send me hunting for the rest of the series. Enzo’s brother Carm is up next, and I’m here for it.

Spotlight Review: IF IT MAKES YOU HAPPY by Julie Olivia

September 30, 2025

From the publisher:

An Instant USA Today Bestseller!

Grab your favorite fall candle, cuddle into a comfy blanket, and travel back in time to 1997 in this cozy, slow-burn romance set in the autumn glow of small-town Vermont.

Now with exclusive bonus content!

My new next-door neighbor seems to have everything figured out. Small town golden boy? Check. Single dad extraordinaire? Check. Hot baker forearms? I didn’t notice them, I swear.

I, on the other hand, don’t–at all–have anything figured out. Trust me, I didn’t think taking over my mom’s dream bed and breakfast in Copper Run Vermont was going to be easy. It should be a good place to heal after my divorce. But apparently my scones belong in the garbage with my small talk skills. As pointed out by none other than Cliff.

Cliff is inescapable. He knows exactly what people need–always. His charm, the way he wears flannel, and even his pastries, make not wanting to be friends with Cliff and his daughters pretty hard.

Friends? I can make friends. That’s safe. Except I’m leaving in three months to pass the inn off to my little sister and get the promotion in Seattle I’ve been working towards. So ask me why I’m thinking about kissing my hot neighbor.

https://amzn.to/4nFnLfc

This was my first read by this author, and I’m thrilled to discover her extensive backlist waiting to be explored. The book perfectly captures fall vibes (which I desperately miss living in South Florida!), 90s nostalgia, and a tender small-town romance between two divorced characters finding love again. I was completely absorbed in their story and could hardly put it down.

The story opens at Michelle’s mother’s funeral, where she is grappling with complicated emotions tied to their strained relationship. The presence of her awful ex-husband doesn’t help, as he is threatening to announce their divorce at the service. She hasn’t told her family yet, as they’ve been dealing with other crises. During the funeral, she notices a mysterious man attending with his daughters and wonders who he is.

Michelle’s parents had opened a bed and breakfast in Vermont—her mother’s beloved passion project. With her mother gone, Michelle puts her successful Seattle advertising career on hold to run the B&B through the fall, until her younger sister can graduate from college and take over permanently. Her father, too heartbroken to return to the place filled with memories, stays with Michelle’s sister during her final semester.

The mysterious man from the funeral turns out to be Cliff, Michelle’s new neighbor. He’s a single father to a teenager and an elementary-aged daughter, running his own bakery in town. He’s also caring, affectionate, and touchy-feely, qualities that overwhelm Michelle, who isn’t comfortable with physical touch or unsolicited help.

Despite Cliff’s warmth clashing with Michelle’s carefully constructed walls, a friendship gradually forms and deepens into something more profound. Both are stubborn and struggle with communication, yet they fit together like puzzle pieces. Their slow-burn romance creates delicious tension as they realize they’re falling in love. What makes their journey particularly poignant is how both carry wounds from their marriages—harsh words from their exes about their worth as partners—while facing the reality that Michelle’s stay is only temporary.

The conflict reaches its peak when Michelle’s sister and father finally arrive at the B&B. Her sister finds Cliff attractive and asks Michelle to play matchmaker. Despite the pain it causes her, Michelle agrees—partly because she’s been encouraging Cliff to start dating again. The request equally wounds Cliff. Their disastrous date becomes a revelation when Cliff can’t stop talking about Michelle, making it clear to her sister where his heart truly lies.

The beauty of Michelle and Cliff’s romance lies in its intimate details: his daily visits to her B&B, her watchful care of his daughters, his persistent quest to discover her favorite baked good. These small moments build alongside the painful ones, creating a rich tapestry of connection. When they finally come together, their physical chemistry burns off the page with perfect intensity.

The supporting characters brilliantly enhance the story’s foundation. From Cliff’s daughters to Michelle’s family to the colorful townspeople (with definite Gilmore Girls festival vibes!), everyone contributes meaningfully to the narrative. I particularly loved Michelle’s reluctant relationship with her ex’s dog, whom she rescues from being sent to the pound, even though the dog doesn’t particularly like her. Their conversations are amusing moments that lighten the story’s heavier themes.

The ending carries bittersweet tension as Michelle’s departure date approaches, creating heartbreaking longing before the satisfying resolution. This book took my heart on a masterful emotional roller coaster ride—cozy yet weighty in all the right places. The epilogue, set eight years later, provides a perfect and beautiful conclusion. The author’s note reveals this was her passion project, making it an ideal introduction to her writing. I’ll definitely be reading more of her work.

Audiobook Sunday: THE DNF* LIST!

September 28, 2025

*DNF = Did Not Finish

As my long time readers know, I have been having trouble with my eyes for years now. I have a somewhat unusual form of glaucoma, called Narrow Angle Glaucoma, that has been treated fairly successfully. I’ve had numerous surgeries along the way, and my next is scheduled for mid-October. That one is a fairly common procedure, but with a twist – I have a cataract in my left eye, but it has somehow attached itself to my iris. My surgeon says it’s just a few more steps for him to take, and that he can do it in his sleep – which I begged him not to do!

Due to surgery to repair a hole in my macula, I ended up with a small blind spot in my right eye. It is due to scar tissue, which I discovered when I had to take the vision test to renew my driver’s license. I had to read some lines, and when I finished, the woman at the DMV asked me to please read the last column. But I didn’t see another column! I had to get a letter from the eye doctor to renew my license, in which I learned a somewhat scary fact – you can actually be legally blind and still allowed to drive, provided you have a note from the doctor.

I know as I age, it is only going to get worse, not better. I have pretty much given up on reading print books, and thank God for the Kindle. I feel so blessed that this is happening to me now, when there are digital options available. If this had happened to me in a previous generation, I would have been screwed. With all that, I decided I had best learn to listen to audiobooks.

Over the years, I’ve tried many times to listen, but I always found my mind wandering. I would be driving along and realize I had no idea what was happening in the book I was listening to. I ended up successfully listening to some children’s books, and read the entire Harry Potter series on Audible. Then I graduated to the Outlander series. I had read all the print books, but my BFF Judy told me to try the audiobooks, too – she loved the reader. Davina Porter is the narrator, and she is Scottish but completely understandable (not always the case!), and she really added depth to the stories. Not only did I listen to them all, but so did my husband! I also watched the series on Starz, with subtitles because Scottish/British accents are not always understandable to me. Porter has retired with only one book left in the series, so the publisher has entrusted it to one of the stars of the TV series, Kristin Atherton, who plays the new Jenny, starting in season 7 (IYKYK). Not only will she read the last book in the series when (???) it comes out, but she has reread the entire series. You can now listen to either narrator. I haven’t tried them yet, though I will definitely be listening to the last book in the series that she reads.

Meanwhile, I have finally found that I can listen to romances on audio successfully. Makes sense, that’s what I read, primarily, so why not listen to them too? That said, I have found many books that I love, and several others that I just couldn’t listen to. Sometimes it was the narrators, sometimes it was the story itself.

Recently, my friend Nora suggested I try the Lucky River Ranch series by Jessica Peterson. I snagged the first book, Cash, from Hoopla, my favorite library audiobook app. I listened to the first few chapters and had to stop. I love Western romances, but apparently, I don’t like Western accents! I grabbed the ebook instead and loved it. I haven’t tried that with most of the audiobooks I’ve stopped, however, because they weren’t recommended by someone I trust but rather suggested by the publisher or algorithm.

I am privileged to have access to advance copies of upcoming titles and have started many audiobooks that way. I have also not finished many of them. There are also many audiobooks that I borrowed from my library but didn’t finish, but unfortunately, I didn’t keep records of those.

They are divided into two camps: books that I just didn’t like the story enough to keep going, and you can tell those by how far I got. And books that I didn’t like the narrator, and you can tell those by how far I didn’t get.

Coming in Hot by Josie Juniper, narrated by Max Rauch & Cecily Foster: 53%

Crash Landing by Annie McQuaid, narrated by Emma Love: 47%

Joy Ride by Ellen Meister, narrated by Sarah Naughton: 27%

Santa Overboard by Carolyn McBride, narrated by Maria Marquis: 47%

32 Days in May by Betty Corrello, narrated Joy Nash: 2%

The Carsons of Lone Rock Books 1-4 by Maisey Yates, narrated by Samantha Cook: 3%

Claire Casey’s Had Enough by Liz Alterman, narrated by Stephanie Rose: 1%

The Four Engagement Rings of Sybil Rain by Hannah Brown, narrated by Cherami Leigh: 1%

If you’ve read my audiobook reviews, you know that there are some narrators who irritated me, but I pushed on and listened to them anyway. I guess sometimes I have more patience than other times.

I remember when I worked for the public library prior to listening to audiobooks, I had patrons who selected audiobooks by the narrator and didn’t really care about the author or even the genre. I haven’t tried that yet, but it seems like most of the narrators I like generally read in the romance genre, so maybe that wouldn’t help me spread my wings, so to speak.

Is there a narrator that you love? Will listen to anything they read? Or a narrator you hate and wouldn’t listen to even if your favorite author had the narrator reading their book? I’d love to hear about your audiobook experiences! I am looking for suggestions as I travel along my audiobook journey. Please leave comments below. I read them all. Thanks!

MR. FIXER UPPER by Lucy Score

September 26, 2025

From the publisher:

From the  New York Times bestselling author of Things We Never Got Over

He started to work the laces of his boots loose. Toeing them off, he tugged his t-shirt over his head.

“Oh my God. What are you doing?” Paige’s voice barely rose above the spray from the showerhead.

“I’m washing your damn hair.”

It’s a constant battle on set between sexy home renovation reality TV star grumpy Gannon King and his no-nonsense field producer. Paige St. James has zero time for temperamental talent.

Mr. Sex in a Toolbelt has made it his mission in life to get a rise out of her, but Paige is a master at locking down her temper. They’re on the road together working long hours fixing houses and changing lives. When cracks in her legendary coolness start to show and sparks fly, Gannon is infatuated and the cameras are there to capture it.

But he’s fallen for a pretty face before and Paige won’t be taken seriously if she’s caught sleeping with the star of her show. She also can’t seem to resist those big, rough hands. Those smoldery hazel eyes. The dimples. The toolbelt. That fiercely protective vibe.

Too bad it’s all about to fall apart.

She never should have trusted him.

He never should have let her go.

Author’s Note: A protective grumpy hero, a not easily impressed heroine, the worst human being on TV ever, a grand gesture so big you’ll need a box of tissues, and THAT SHOWER SCENE.

https://amzn.to/469dAtm

My Lucy Score Obsession Continues!

Paige works as a field producer for an HGTV-style renovation show with a meaningful twist—every house they restore belongs to a family with a powerful, often heartbreaking story, like a child battling cancer. The show’s star, Gannon, is a brooding heartthrob with a grumpy streak, but Paige knows how to handle him. That is, until their chemistry starts to sizzle and the network executives spot a golden ratings opportunity.

Despite having no interest in being on camera—Paige thrives behind the scenes—the promise of a substantial raise and keeping the big boss happy is too tempting to refuse. She desperately needs the extra income to fund her passion project: a documentary exposing the persistent gender disparities plaguing Hollywood. This subplot adds genuine depth and relevance to the romance.

As Paige and Gannon’s connection intensifies, buried secrets surface, creating delicious complications. Their dialogue crackles with wit and humor, while their chemistry practically steams off the page. The tension builds relentlessly—I found myself racing through pages, unable to slow down.
I’m now diving deep into Score’s entire backlist, hunting down every book I may have missed, and so far, every single one has exceeded expectations. She has an exceptional talent for weaving together heat, sweetness, and humor in perfect harmony. As I used to remind my library patrons: if you haven’t read a book yet, it’s new to you—who cares when it was published!

Keep writing, Lucy Score. I’ll keep reading every word.

Audiobook Sunday: CHASING FOREVER by Piper Rayne

September 21, 2025

Narration by Vanessa Edwin & Stephen Dexter

Plain Daisy Ranch, Book 4

From the author:

It was a fun Vegas getaway—until I woke up married to my ex-fiancé’s brother.

After Watson brother ditched me at the altar, I stopped believing in happily-ever-afters. So I have no clue how I ended up saying “I do” to Brooks—Watson brother #2—somewhere between tequila shots and bad decisions.

Okay, that may not be true.

Sheriff Watson has been a charming thorn in my side ever since his brother left our small ranch town in his rearview mirror. He’s a little too steady, a little too sweet, and way too intuitive because he sees through my facade. But no matter how tempting he is, he’s still a Watson.

I demand an annulment. He refuses, bargaining four real dates before he signs.

Fine. I’ll sabotage each one and keep my heart safely locked away. It’s easier this way because he has no idea the secret I’m keeping.

Of course, Brooks doesn’t go down easy—he has enough faith for both of us. He tackles my fears at every turn, making me wonder what would happen if I went all in.

But trusting the wrong man once nearly ruined me—doing it again might finish the job.

https://amzn.to/3I47tgr

I first read the third book in this series, The One I Didn’t See Coming, and intended to circle back to the earlier ones—but forgot. Then this newest installment popped up in my Hoopla feed—bless the algorithm, because it turned out to be an absolute delight.

The drunken Vegas wedding is romance novel gold, and this story executed the trope perfectly. Lottie’s backstory provides the emotional foundation: Holden Watson left her at the altar, devastating her ability to trust—both men and herself. So when she wakes up married to his brother, Brooks, after a night she can’t remember, mortification doesn’t begin to cover it. An immediate annulment seems like the only solution.

Brooks, however, has secretly harbored feelings for Lottie for years. Once Holden claimed her, Brooks stepped aside. But now that fate has thrown them together, he’s not letting go without a fight. His parents are furious, hers are curious, and Brooks—small-town sheriff and son of the mayor—is determined to prove he’s the right man for her. He negotiates four dates before he’ll agree to an annulment. Those four dates change everything.

This is a slow-burn romance packed with angst, humor, heart, and heat—plenty to keep the pages flying. My only complaint is the cover design, which I found genuinely off-putting. But Piper Rayne, the writing duo behind the book, never disappoints—and this one’s no exception. I’ve downloaded the first two books in the series, so expect those reviews soon!

Spotlight Review: PITCHER PERFECT by Tessa Bailey

September 9, 2025

Big Shots, Book 4

From the publisher:

New York Times bestselling author Tessa Bailey is back with an all-new enemies-to-lovers, fake-dating sports romance about a playboy hockey rookie and the disciplined softball pitcher completely immune to his charms.

Boston Bearcats rookie Robbie Corrigan is living the dream. He’s made it to the NHL, his best friend/teammate and fellow “orgasm donor” is his roomie—and the women of Boston love them both. Life is sweet. That is, until he meets Skylar Paige, division 1 softball pitcher, girl least likely to take anyone’s bull…and the one member of the opposite sex immune to his charms. Robbie might be dazzled by the badass pitcher, but Skylar pegs him as a filthy player and wants nothing to do with him.

When he discovers she’s carrying a serious torch for her brother’s best friend, Robbie knows he should just go back to clubbing and whipped cream bikini parties, but he can’t seem to leave Skylar to flounder on her romantic quest to land another man. Nor can he miss out on the opportunity to spend time with her and hopefully redeem himself. Before Robbie knows it, he’s agreed to be Skylar’s fake boyfriend/love coach at an upcoming family wilderness competition where her crush will be in attendance. What could go wrong?

Through a series of contests that require them to trust each other, Robbie and Skylar grow closer and closer until their fake relationship starts to feel like the realest thing they’ve ever known and the sizzling lessons in sensuality burn out of control.

But it’s all just pretend…right?

https://amzn.to/47me4xj

Skyla plays softball for her college team, but is also passionate about baseball. So when her brother asks her to pitch in a quirky exhibition game against a team of professional hockey players, she’s all in. The catch? These hockey pros think baseball is a joke, while the baseball players dismiss hockey as nothing more than glorified brawling. Skylar finds herself caught in the middle of this testosterone-fueled turf war.

Things heat up when she overhears one of the hockey players, Robbie, bragging about his latest hookup in crude terms. The comment infuriates her, and just like that, the enemies-to-lovers spark is lit. Robbie, however, is instantly smitten with Skylar, but as someone who’s never committed to anything beyond one-night stands, he’s completely out of his depth when it comes to pursuing a real relationship. Meanwhile, Skylar has been nursing a crush on Madden—her brother’s best friend—for years, though he’s never seen her as anything more than his buddy’s little sister.

Their ultra-competitive family hosts an annual “Olympics,” and this year, Skylar is determined to finally catch Madden’s attention. To pull it off, she recruits none other than Robbie—the loudmouth hockey player—to help her. Robbie jumps at the chance to spend time with her, even if it means helping her win over another guy. The situation becomes even more complicated when Skylar, admitting her limited romantic experience, asks Robbie to teach her about flirting and intimacy. Naturally, he’s more than happy to oblige.

Bailey delivers once again. Eventually, emotions boil over, truths come out, and everyone ends up exactly where they’re meant to be. The journey is packed with humor, heart, and plenty of steam. This series seems to be shifting from hockey to baseball, and I’m totally here for it. Can’t wait to see what’s next!

Spotlight Review: STORY OF MY LIFE by Lucy Score

September 2, 2025

Story Lake, Book 1

From the publisher:

Brand new small town romance from  New York Times bestseller Lucy Score.

Gilmore Girls meets Schitt’s Creek redemption romcom. What’s more inspiring to a romcom author than a hot, grumpy contractor literally knocking down walls?

Hazel Hart was a successful romance novelist until a breakup drives her straight into writer’s block. Having failed (and failed some more) to deliver her new manuscript, she’s hiding from the world behind a wall of old takeout containers until her publisher lays down the law. If she misses her next deadline it’s The End.

Desperate for inspiration, Hazel impulse-buys a historic home online and flees Manhattan to tiny Story Lake, PA. Upon her dramatic arrival―involving an incident with a bald eagle―she discovers the charm of her new home may have been slightly exaggerated.

The house is a wreck and the town is struggling after their biggest employer shut down. Also, since her raccoon-infested home came with a seat on the town council our introverted heroine is stuck with a front row seat to all the small-town shenanigans.

But Hazel isn’t worried. Not since all six-feet-three inches of grouchy contractor Campbell Bishop slapped a bandage on her forehead and unintentionally inspired the heck out of her. There’s only one thing to do: Hire Cam and his equally gorgeous brothers to renovate her new spider museum…er…house.

Okay two things. A fake date for “research purposes” will really put her work-in-progress on track. Before Hazel knows it, she’s writing a romance novel and living one. At least until the drywall dust settles, the town she’s falling in love with faces bankruptcy, and growly Cam remembers why he can’t live happily ever after.

Author’s Note: “This series is my love letter to every reader who said they wanted to move to a fictional town.”

This is the first book of a new series and was the start of my reading block! I loved this book, and when I was finished, I tried to move on to the next new book I had for review. I kept picking up new books and putting them down. Nothing was holding my attention, so I did a deep dive into Lucy Score’s backlist – reviews to follow! It took half a dozen books or so until I was ready to move on to a new author.

Hazel, a bestselling romance writer, finds herself facing a perfect storm of life changes: a fresh divorce, the loss of her New York City apartment, and a devastating case of writer’s block. In a moment of impulse, she dips into her savings to purchase a house in a tiny Pennsylvania hamlet—a purchase that unexpectedly comes with a seat on the town council.

Reality hits hard when Hazel arrives to discover her new home bears little resemblance to the charming fixer-upper she imagined. It’s a dilapidated mess, complete with a resident raccoon and more spiders than she’d care to count. Still, the town has one saving grace: a highly recommended contractor.

Enter Cam, the local contractor who’s as gorgeous as he is grumpy. Despite his surly attitude, his presence seems to unlock Hazel’s creative block. Desperate to keep her writing mojo flowing, she proposes they fake date. Cam thinks the idea is ridiculous, but Hazel’s charm gradually wears down his resistance.

What starts as a pretend romance soon turns into something real, filled with sizzling tension, hilarious moments, and heartwarming growth. This is a delightful fish-out-of-water romantic comedy where their fake relationship turns steamy, and the quirky townsfolk provide endless entertainment in the best possible way. The story builds to a satisfying happy ending that left me eager for more.

This is classic Score—fun, heartwarming, and populated with lovably eccentric small-town characters. Fair warning: like her other books, this one includes explicit intimate scenes, so readers who prefer fade-to-black romance might want to look elsewhere or skip those pages. For me, it was pure enjoyment from start to finish, and I’m already anticipating the sequel.

RELATIONSHIP GOALS by Brittany Kelley

August 15, 2025

From the publisher:

Ted Lasso meets How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days in this steamy sports romance about an infamous star soccer player who is forced to fake date a Hollywood starlet, only to develop real feelings for her—just as she learns he was pretending and vows to get even.

Abigail Hunt’s Hollywood dreams could best be described as slow burn…but she’s about to graduate from TV sidekick to dramatic actor. When the esteemed director of her breakout role suggests a deep dive for her part by shadowing the head of a struggling pro soccer team, she jumps at the chance to prove she’s ready.

Getting asked out by notorious grump and gorgeous star player Luke Wolfe wasn’t in the plan, but suddenly her research is getting a lot more…hands-on. Their relationship quickly sets social media on fire, and Luke seems determined to prove he’s more than his villainous reputation. But just when Abigail is happier than ever—her name in lights and her heart in good hands—the other cleat drops: Luke’s been coerced into faking their relationship to improve the team’s ticket sales.

Furious, Abigail refuses to give Luke the satisfaction of dumping him—she decides to get even. Over-the-top dates, treating his games like fashion shows, and befriending the fan club he hates? Count her in. It’s only a matter of time until she pushes the right buttons.

She just didn’t expect him to keep putting up with it—or to say I love you.

If you love “Ted Lasso” and “How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days”, this book is tailor-made for you—it cleverly weaves together plotlines from both.

Luke is the archetypal grumpy soccer star with a heart of gold. He’s devoted to his cancer-stricken mother and even fosters kittens in his spare time. Though he plays for Los Angeles, he desperately wants a trade to his hometown of Seattle to be closer to his mom during her treatment.

Abigail is a TV actress recovering from public humiliation, determined to land a career-defining movie role. The film centers on a professional soccer scandal, so producers arrange for her to shadow the female owner of a local soccer team. The team owners see an opportunity: they convince Luke to fake-date Abigail for positive publicity and ticket sales, dangling that coveted Seattle trade as an incentive. Luke agrees—until he actually meets Abigail.

The arrangement becomes complicated when Luke genuinely falls for her. Their first date is magical, but he can’t bring himself to reveal the arrangement’s true origins. As their relationship deepens and social media buzz grows, everyone’s happy with the results. Then Abigail discovers the truth about how their romance began.

Channeling Andie from “How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days,” Abigail launches into hilariously over-the-top, cringe-worthy behavior designed to force Luke into breaking up with her. Chaos ensues until Luke finally comes clean about everything, confesses his true feelings, and they find their way to a happy ending.

This is a fun, fast-paced rom-com with plenty of humor, a touch of heat, and a whole lot of heart. It reads like the first in a series, with hints of the next couple waiting in the wings. A quick, light-hearted read that’s perfect for a weekend escape.
