SOMEDAY MY DUKE WILL COME by Christina Britton

July 18, 2021

Isle of Synne, Book 2

From the publisher:

A fake engagement becomes the real thing in this historical romance that New York Times bestselling author Grace Burrowes calls “first-rate Regency fun!” and is perfect for fans of Netflix’s Bridgerton series!

Lady Clara Ashford had no intention of ever getting married. A rogue took advantage of her innocence when she was young, and she’s spent her whole life trying to make sure no one finds out. But now that her sister is engaged, Clara’s well-meaning aunt has set her sights on Clara. Desperate to avoid the matchmaking schemes, Clara’s not sure what to do—until her neighbor, the new Duke of Reigate, shows up on her doorstep in need of her help.

Quincy Nesbitt reluctantly accepted the dukedom after his brother’s death, but he’ll be damned if he accepts his brother’s fiancée as well. The only polite way to decline is to become engaged to someone else—quickly. Lady Clara has the right connections and happens to need him as much as he needs her. But he soon discovers she’s also witty and selfless, and if he’s not careful, he just might lose his heart.

This was a really good historical romance with both a strong female protagonist as well as a strong male lead. Oftentimes one is more powerful than the other, but for some reason here it doesn’t feel that way despite the fact that the lead is a Duke. Lady Clara is just as strong, and in fact often rescues the Duke. That especially comes to bear when the Duke’s horrible mother decides he needs to marry his older brother’s fiancée.

The Duke of Reigate was the youngest son, and when his father passes away, he overhears his mother plotting to send him into the Navy. Instead, the 14-year-old gets a job on a ship to America. We don’t see his life there until he returns to England, having sold off his successful Boston business. When he finally screws up the courage to visit his mother, he is shocked to learn that all of his brothers are now dead, leaving him with the title he never wanted. His mother is as hateful as ever – in an aside, I didn’t really understand this. From all the reading I’ve done in this genre, it seems like he would have all the power and the control of the money, and if he so desired, he could send his mother off to live somewhere far, far away with no ill results. But that doesn’t happen here. Instead, she is conniving and controlling and a general pain in the butt.

But when she tries to force him into a marriage with the reticent young woman who had been promised to his brother, Lady Clara comes to the rescue by announcing she is engaged to the Duke, so he cannot marry the other woman. The fake engagement is a popular trope in romance and in this case, has the usual result of the fake couple falling in love. But Clara has some serious history and that lends more depth to this story.

This is a really good series. The first book, A Good Duke Is Hard to Find, was terrific and I am looking forward to the next.

IT’S BETTER THIS WAY by Debbie Macomber

July 17, 2021

From the publisher:

After her marriage ends, one woman’s struggle to pick up the pieces finally leads to a new beginning but is the past truly behind her? #1 New York Times bestselling author Debbie Macomber explores the powerful intersections of love and family in this poignant novel.

It’s been nearly six years since Julia Jones had her heart broken. After her husband became involved with another woman, she did everything she could to save their marriage, to no avail. Their two daughters continue to stand by Julia in the wake of their father’s behavior—and they’ve had a tough time getting along with the “other woman” who became their stepmother. Distraught after selling the family home, Julia moves into a condominium complex that offers the warmth and charm of a fresh start. Now, having settled into her new community and sold her successful interior design business, she’s embraced a fulfilling new life, one that doesn’t seem to need a man in it. Her beloved father’s trusty saying is ringing truer than ever: It’s better this way.

But when Julia meets a handsome new resident in the building’s exercise room, she can’t help but be drawn to him. Heath Johnson is a welcome change from the men she’s encountered on the occasional—mostly disastrous—dates her sister has eagerly planned for her over the years. As she and Heath, a divorcé himself, begin to grow close, their friendship blossoms into an unexpected love. However, they soon realize that combining families proves to be a challenge, even though their four children are adults.

When a dramatic revelation threatens the happiness they’ve found, Julia and Heath must reconcile their love for their children with their love for each other. If they can’t, their bright future together may be nothing but a dream.

If you haven’t read Macomber, this book is an excellent place to start. It is a romance, but like all her romances, it is of the sweet, no sex, variety. I must admit that sometimes that really bothers me, especially when the main characters are parents, legally single, and of retirement age; it just doesn’t feel real to me. Would a 50-something woman date a man for months without sleeping with him? Is she a nun? If she is then she shouldn’t be dating. There are many books that are sweet romances and don’t include sex, but hint that there is a physical relationship going on off-screen, as it were. That makes sense to me and I’m fine with it. But don’t even religious Christians have sex outside of marriage? Or am I just a cynic?

Anyway, just know going in to any Macomber book you will be safe from having to read anything sexual. I like her stories enough to push past my disbelief. But even though she writes romances, all of her books fall into another category some people call “comfort reads.” I like that descriptor, it really works for these books. They are comfort reads; cosy, sweet, sometimes a bit religious but never over the top, and they always have a happy ending. That said, she doesn’t shy away from conflict because conflict is what drives romance. In this story, the conflict comes from the adult children of our protagonists. One of the things I love best about Macomber’s books is that she doesn’t feel the need to always make her protagonists millennials, or younger. Older people also can have a great romance in their lives, sometimes more than one, and she celebrates that. As someone who is a card carrying member of AARP, I appreciate that.

I don’t want to say a lot about this story beyond what is in the publisher’s synopsis; there are too many spoilers and this is a story that needs to unfold naturally for the reader. I will say that I read it in a day and really enjoyed it. A lot of it actually hit very close to home for me, especially the way the blended families interacted. Until the happy ending, of course. I didn’t get that with my dysfunctional family! So it was especially sweet for me. Another easy read from the Queen of Christmas.

CHRISTMAS AT THE RESTAURANT by Pamela Kelley

July 16, 2021

The Nantucket Restaurant Series, Book 2

From the publisher:

Nantucket’s famous Christmas Stroll is always the first week of December and this year sisters Mandy and Emma and Paul, the executive chef want to do something extra special for Mimi’s Place, the restaurant that they co-own.

It will be Emma and Paul’s first Christmas together as a couple and Mandy’s first holiday as a newly single and divorced mother of two. Although Mandy does have a promising new relationship, though she wants to take things very slow.

Their sister Jill and her new husband, Billy, are planning to spend the whole month of December on Nantucket too, juggling working remotely for the executive search firm they own together in Manhattan and relaxing and spending time with family and helping out at the restaurant too.

And Gina, their awesome bartender is spending her first winter on Nantucket and it’s a bit of an adjustment–winters on Nantucket are so much quieter than the city life she was used to. She’s even more confused when someone she had a major crush on back in the city moves to Nantucket. Suddenly her boring winter is starting to look a lot more interesting.

I recently found this series so I was excited to see that the second book was a Christmas story, just in time for the Christmas in July summer extravaganza. It was not meant for that, but it’s how it fell into my lap. So be it. It’s a fun read and a nice break from the Hallmark Channel movie bonanza. I don’t have as much patience with those movies, I can’t watch more than one a week at most. But books? I’m all in. This may even be a Hallmark movie, I didn’t check.

I loved reconnecting with the characters from the first book, but the romance is centered around the new bartender, Gina, and two men she starts dating. But I really enjoyed catching up with the sisters and seeing how their relationships were doing a year later. Nantucket in winter was fun, too, and while I didn’t enjoy this as much as the first book, it was still an enjoyable read. If you need a little holiday magic in your summer, look no further!

MISTLETOE & MR. RIGHT by Sarah Morgenthaler

July 15, 2021

Moose Springs, Alaska Series, Book 2

From the publisher:

How the moose (almost) stole Christmas.

Lana Montgomery is everything the quirky small town of Moose Springs, Alaska can’t stand: a rich socialite with dreams of changing things for the better. But Lana’s determined to prove that she belongs…even if it means trading her stilettos for snow boots and tracking one of the town’s hairiest Christmas mysteries: the Santa Moose, an antlered Grinch hell-bent on destroying every bit of holiday cheer (and tinsel) it can sink its teeth into.

And really…how hard could it be?

The last few years have been tough on Rick Harding, and it’s not getting any easier now that his dream girl’s back in town. When Lana accidentally tranquilizes him instead of the Santa Moose, it’s clear she needs help, fast…and this could be his chance to finally catch her eye. It’s an all-out Christmas war, but if they can nab that darn moose before it destroys the town, Rick and Lana might finally find a place where they both belong…together.

‘Tis the season! Christmas in July, of course. If you’ve been enjoying the Hallmark Channel’s celebration in film, why not in books as well? This is a terrific book to get you going.

This is one of my favorite series, and I’ve read all three books; The Tourist Attraction (Book 1) and Enjoy the View (book 3) and of course this one. They are all really fun reads. I love the Alaska setting and the characters are really well developed, I couldn’t help but care about them.

This is a light, funny read with all the charm of a small town Christmas. Most of the laughs come from the moose that is running amok and from the characters, too. This was a laugh out loud book for me, and a sweet romance, my favorite combination for pure escape reading. If you want to extend your Christmas in July celebration, have fun with this terrific read.

AN AMBUSH OF WIDOWS by Jeff Abbott

July 14, 2021

From the publisher:

In New York Times bestselling author Jeff Abbott’s latest novel of riveting psychological suspense, an uneasy alliance forms as two widows delve into their husbands’ deadly and dangerous secrets—as they try to protect their own.

Henry North is a down-on-his-luck cybersecurity expert from New Orleans. Adam Zhang is the cofounder of one of Austin’s most successful venture capitalist firms. These two men didn’t know each other. They had never met. Yet they died together, violently, in a place neither had any business being.

When Henry doesn’t return from a business trip, his wife, Kirsten, panics—and then gets an anonymous phone call: “Your husband is dead in Austin.”

Flora Zhang knew her husband was keeping secrets. She suspected an affair, but she had decided she could forgive him for his weakness—until her husband ended up dead. And with no explanation for her husband’s murder, the police begin to suspect her.

Together, these two widows will face a powerful foe determined to write a false narrative about the murders. In doing so, neither Flora nor Kirsten will remain the women the world thought they were.

It’s a Jeff Abbott novel. It’s good, it’s engrossing it’s definitely an all-nighter. How to review it becomes the problem. The plot involves two women; the first is Kirsten North. She is happily married to Henry North who is a cyber security expert currently down on his luck. They live in New Orleans. Kirrsten in her own right is a consultant to the Tech Sector with a good reputation for digging out hard to obtain facts about companies her clients need information on for things like possible purchase or doing business with.

The other woman is Flora Zang married to Adam Zang who has an impeccable record of launching start up Tech companies. They live in Austin, Texas a city currently enjoying a major expansion with the arrival of many successful Tech companies. Flora’s problem is that Adam is married to the business and she seems to be number two wife in the relationship. Her current major interest lies in living a life dedicated to spending her husband’s fortune doing good deeds which would prove important in enhancing the business’s reputation.  She does love her husband and married him before he made his fortune.

Action begins at a moment that Kirsten is readying herself to begin her day’s work. Henry is on a business trip and has indicated that he is going to New York. Her personal phone rings and since very few have the number she picks it up thinking that It is Henry forgetting something.    A strange voice, using a disguising app, tells her that her husband has been shot to death in Austin. After going through the thinking that the call is a bad joke, she decides to go to Austin and upon arrival finds that it is true. Henry is dead and has been killed along with Adam Zang in a warehouse owned by Zang Industries. In attempting to find out what happened to her husband she meets with Flora Zang and the two women find common cause in attempting to find out who killed their husbands and why.

In typical Jeff Abbott fashion, the reader will head straight forward into the book and face a fascinating and changing set of facts before the ending is reached. A very bright note is that the author sets up future books featuring the two women and all that remains is to keep one’s eyes open for when they come out.  Five star – of course.

INSTAMOM by Chantel Guertin

July 13, 2021

A Modern Romance with Humor and Heart

From the publisher:

Fans of Lauren Weisberger and Emily Henry won’t want to miss this funny, sexy, and emotional novel that looks at modern relationships, modern choices, and redefining—not to mention rebranding—your dreams, through the eyes of an Instagram influencer.

“Themes of personal choice and female empowerment underscore this tender rom-com from Guertin… A cast of wonderful supporting characters, led by spunky Addie, add authenticity and tug at the heartstrings. Readers will be charmed.”— Publishers Weekly

PopSugar Beach Reads Selection

In this #funny, #wise, #emotionally compelling look at modern love and finding your true path, a proudly kid-free influencer meets the ultimate #dealbreaker . . .

It’s the influencer’s golden rule: know your niche. Kit Kidding has found hers on Instagram, where she gets paid to promote brands and share expertly curated posts about her fun, fabulous, child-free life. Kit likes kids just fine, but she passionately believes that women who choose not to become mothers shouldn’t have to face guilt. Or judgement. Or really hot chefs who turn out to be single dads.

Will MacGregor is aggravating, sexy, persistent, averse to social media, and definitely a bad idea. As soon as Kit learns his parenting status, she vows to put their scorching one-night stand behind her and move on. But Will and Kit are thrown together on an Instagram campaign, and the more time she spends with him—and his whip-smart, eight-year-old daughter, Addie—the more difficult it is to stay away, much less sustain what Will so cleverly calls her “Resting Beach Face.” Kit’s picture-perfect career path is suddenly clashing with the possibility of a different future—messy, complicated, and real. Which life does she truly want? Will she have to re-invent herself? And will love still be waiting by the time she figures it out?

I don’t know a whole lot about Instagram, especially influencers, so this was a really interesting read for me. Plus it’s fun, funny, and has a terrific romance at its center. As the bookstagram folks say, it’s got “all the feels”.

Kit Kidding lost her mom when she was only 10 years old. She decided early on that she didn’t want kids, mostly because she was afraid that she, too, would die by her 35th birthday. Her sister also doesn’t have kids, nor do her friends. In fact, she has built a career on it, writing a book about the “child-free” lifestyle. Her instagram feed has a couple of million followers, and her life is in the pictures. At least, the parts of her life that she is paid to share.

When one of her sponsors, a ready-to-cook meal delivery service wants pictures of her actually cooking the food, she panics. Kit stores books in her oven, her cabinets, and well, pretty much everywhere. She has all of her mom’s books, plus all the books she’s collected over the years. She even has a private bookstagram account. But the sponsor is willing to send a chef to help her learn to cook, so she caves. It’s all about the money.

Except the chef is the hot guy she had a one night stand with and now he’s ready for more. There is no fighting the strong attraction between them except he has something she definitely isn’t willing to cave on – a young daughter. Lots of struggles here to get to the happy ending, but what a fun ride to get there! A terrific, entertaining read.

THE BOOKSTORE ON THE BEACH by Brenda Novak

July 12, 2021

From the publisher:

How do you start a new chapter of your life when you haven’t closed the book on the previous one?

Eighteen months ago, Autumn Divac’s husband went missing. Her desperate search has yielded no answers, and she can’t imagine moving forward without him. But for the sake of their two teenage children, she has to try.

Autumn takes her kids home for the summer to the charming beachside town where she was raised. She seeks comfort working alongside her mother and aunt at their bookshop, only to learn that her daughter is facing a huge life change and her mother has been hiding a terrible secret for years. And when she runs into the boy who stole her heart in high school, old feelings start to bubble up again. Is she free to love him, or should she hold out hope for her husband’s return? She can only trust her heart…and hope it won’t lead her astray.

Autumn has been searching for her missing husband for so long that she knows it’s time to give up, but it’s a hard thing to do. While some people think he took off with another woman, Autumn is pretty sure he didn’t. Why would he leave without any money or any of his possessions? She thinks he went to the Ukraine and was doing something for the FBI, but they are not helpful so she hires a private detective. He turns out to be not so helpful either.

Autumn’s kids are in their final years of high school. Taylor will be a senior, and her brother Caden is just a year behind. It’s been difficult for them to deal with their father’s disappearance but they have had to go on with their own lives. Autumn’s mom won’t travel so she decides to bring the kids to her mom for the summer. She lives in Sable Beach, a small beach town, and it takes several hours to drive there from their home in Tampa. Her mom’s house isn’t big, so Taylor gets the bedroom and Caden gets the couch, while Autumn sleeps in the small apartment above the garage.

The kids make friends and seem happy-ish, so Autumn relaxes a bit. It’s incredibly difficult being stuck in limbo, not knowing if her husband is alive or dead but she knows she has to end the search soon. Things take a turn when she runs into Quinn, her high school crush. He married his high school sweetheart and broke Autumn’s heart, not that he knew that. But his wife suffers from a debilitating mental illness, which culminates in her stabbing Quinn in his sleep. He survived but she’s in prison, and her mom is still in this small town, badmouthing Quinn.

Quinn and Autumn start seeing each other and all the old feelings come back but there is that pesky missing husband lingering in the background. Taylor is having some major issues, including questioning whether or not she is a lesbian. I was so impressed with how Autumn handled it, so kudos to Novak for a sensitive and realistic (to me) response.

It’s not a stretch to say you can guess what happens once Autumn and Quinn realize they have fallen in love and want to spend their lives together. The kids really like him, too.

There is another plot line regarding Mary, Autumn’s mother. Mary and Laura own the bookstore in the title, and are best friends. Mary has a very disturbing background that takes a while to unravel, but adds another dimension to the story.

This is a really good read with a lot of twists for a romance that really isn’t romantic suspense. There is the mystery of the missing husband, and Mary’s background, but everything comes together by the end. I couldn’t put this book down and I really cared what happened to all these characters. Novak always writes a good story, and I loved this one.

NOTE: Novak is offering a free “Bookstore on the Beach” Bonus Epilogue that also signs you up for her newsletter. The epilogue was truly the icing on the cake here, and I was happy to share my email so I won’t miss her next book!

LOVE FOR BEGINNERS by Jill Shalvis

July 11, 2021

The Wildstone Series, Book 7

From the publisher:

But although Gracie finds herself slowly falling for Sir online, she has

USA TODAY BESTSELLER

What would you change if you had to start your life—and love life—over again?

When Emma Harris wakes up from a coma she learns that her fiancé and her BFF have fallen in love, she’s lost her job, and the life she knew is gone. Overwhelmed but grateful to be alive she starts over from scratch. Not as easy as it sounds, of course. But she’s never been a quitter, even if she wishes she could quit rehab, where her hot but evil physical therapist, Simon, puts her through the wringer.

Eager for a new beginning, Emma opens a doggy day care. Unfortunately, the only space she can afford is owned by her childhood nemesis Ali Pratt. But hey, she’s been through worse, right? She tries to roll with the punches, but a friend drops his grandpa off at the doggy day care in desperation then on top of that, she and Ali bring the term ‘frenemies’ to a whole new level. And then another grandparent shows up. And another.

In the midst of all that, Emma realizes she’s accidentally fallen for Evil PT. But the most horrifying thing of all is that Ali just might have turned into the best friend she’s ever had. And as Emma grows from the pain of her past and takes on her new path, she comes to realize that life isn’t what you’re given, it’s what you make of it.

This was such a good book on so many levels. Shalvis writes great romances, and this certainly is, but it is so much more. For one thing, our heroine feels like anything but. Emma was a runner, and got hit by a car as she crossed a street. It was a no fault accident; the driver who hit her didn’t see the stop sign hidden by a tree (rather like the parking ticket we just got in Brooklyn because the “no standing” sign was hidden behind a tree). The driver hit another car and all told, Emma had horrific trauma to her but the driver’s wife died. They are both feeling lots of survivor guilt.

Simon is the physical therapist that has been working with Emma since the accident almost a year earlier. Her doctors told her she would never walk again, but with Simon’s help/torture, she is walking. But if having a traumatic accident wasn’t bad enough, Emma’s fiancé and her best friend ended up falling in love. so the two most important people in her life are now her enemy. She had been living with her BFF, but once she’s out of rehab she knows she can’t go back there. Luckily, Simon found her an apartment. It’s a second floor walk up, which means Emma has to deal with the stairs but that is good for her, too.

Emma is half in love with Simon, but he’s too important to her as a PT so she doesn’t want to risk a relationship with him. Not to mention she is in no mindset to date. Simon fell in love with Emma when he saw her arguing with her doctors about walking. She is the most determined person he’s ever met, and he has tons of admiration for the work she’s done to get better. Plus he thinks she’s hot.

Meanwhile, Emma cannot find a job. No one wants to hear that the gap in her employment history is due to being in a coma for months. She works very part time at a dog sitting service. She does training with the dogs who need it. But she needs a real job. Then the owner decides she wants to spend time with her grandchildren (I can relate!) and wants to sell the business. Emma decides it’s the perfect business for her but after she is turned down by three banks for a business loan, she is at the end of the road. But then Simon’s sister Ali comes through.

Ali helps run the family real estate business but has always wanted something of her own. But Emma and Ali have history, having competed all through high school. Due to a series of unfortunate events, they pretty much hate each other. But both are willing to overlook that to get what they want, and a partnership is formed.

As Ali and Emma finally become friends, Simon and Emma admit their feelings for one another. But Simon is in a bad place. His father suffered a couple of strokes and Simon is now his caretaker, not to mention running his father’s real estate company, which he hates. He loves doing PT, but has had to cut way back on his hours due to his other responsibilities, and he is at the point where he just doesn’t think he has the time for a relationship. In fact his last relationship ended when he couldn’t give her enough time.

But despite all this, Emma and Simon do get together, and then it falls apart. Ali and Emma become good friends, and Simon and Emma get their happily ever after. This was a very compelling read with terrific characters you can’t help but root for. Another excellent addition to the Wildstone series that can be read as a standalone.

THE RESTAURANT by Pamela Kelley

July 10, 2021

The Nantucket Restaurant Series, Book 1

From the publisher:

Three sisters. An inherited Nantucket restaurant. One year before they can sell.

Mandy, Emma and Jill are as close as three sisters who live hundreds of miles apart can be. They grew up together on Nantucket, but Mandy is the only one that stayed.

Jill lives a glamorous life in Manhattan as a co-owner of a successful executive search firm. Never married, she is in her mid-thirties and lives in a stunning, corner condo with breathtaking views of the city and Hudson river. Everyone thinks there’s something going on with her partner, Billy, because as a workaholic, she spends more time with him than anyone else. But there’s never been anything but friendship between them and Billy loves being a bachelor in NYC.

Emma lives in Arizona and is an elementary school teacher and an aspiring photographer. She met her college professor husband, Peter, in grad school and they’ve been married for almost thirteen years. In recent years, she’s noticed that Peter has grown distant. But when he shares a surprising secret, she doesn’t see it coming and her world is turned upside down.

Mandy followed her high school boyfriend, Cory to Boston College, and right after graduation, they married and settled in Dover, just outside of Boston. Cory joined a successful hedge fund, while Mandy took a job at a downtown financial services firm as an administrative assistant. She quit a year later, when Blake, the first baby came. Two years later, when Brooke was born, Cory left to open a competing Hedge Fund and they moved home to Nantucket. Now that the children are older, Mandy has more free time and is eager to do more than just volunteer with local charity events. But Cory doesn’t want her to work. He thinks it doesn’t reflect well on him and appearances are everything to Cory. Though when Mandy finds a second cell phone in his gym bag, she begins to question what is really going on.

When their beloved grandmother, Rose Ferguson passes peacefully in her sleep a week before her ninety-ninth birthday she leaves them quite a surprise. In addition to her Nantucket home, they learned that she was the silent owner of Mimi’s Place, one of Nantucket’s most popular year-round restaurants. There is of course, a catch–she left the restaurant equally to Mandy, Emma, and Jill–and also to Paul, the chef for the past twelve years. And before they can sell, all three girls need to work at the restaurant for a period of one year–or else their shares will go to Paul–who was also Emma’s first love. Three sisters inherit a Nantucket restaurant and must work together for a year–or lose their shares to the chef. Paul was Emma’s first love, and now he’s their business partner.

I have never seen such a long, thorough synopsis as the one the publisher provides for this book (which led me to believe it was self published, and yes.) So I don’t really need to summarize the plot. I will say there was no cell phone in the gym bag, but there was a receipt for one – same difference, same results. You know what it means when a wife finds a second cell phone, and it is never anything good.

These three sisters get along amazingly well, lucky lucky siblings. Growing up on Nantucket, they never knew their grandmother owned their favorite restaurant, or really anything about her life. I think most kids don’t know much about their grandparents, so I found that pretty easy to believe. The fact that she was matchmaking from beyond the grave, also believable. And that two sisters are having marital problems at the same time, again believable. I am crediting all this believability to the author, she does a really good job here of introducing three complicated characters, and had me completely immersed in their stories from the get go. The fact that the plot revolves around a restaurant was just gravy! Plus it’s a pretty short book,, so kudos for developing so many characters in a short space.

This was a good read, very entertaining and for those who care, no sex. But implied sex, so a step above (and more believable) than other sweet romances like those from Debbie Macomber.

The next book in this series is Christmas at the Restaurant, which falls nicely into the ever popular Christmas in July summer extravaganza. It was not meant for that, but it’s how it fell into my lap. So be it. Check back for a review shortly.

THE SECRET INGREDIENT by Nancy Naigle

July 9, 2021

A HALLMARK CHANNEL ORIGINAL MOVIE!

From the publisher:

Love is like a perfect recipe…You never want to lose it.

Years ago, Kelly McIntyre and Andrew York were engaged and dreaming of opening a restaurant together. Then he chose an opportunity to study in Paris over the small-town life they’d planned, and their romance came to a bittersweet end.

But Kelly’s doing fine. She’s not only the owner of a potbellied pig named Gray, but also of her own bakery. Business is good—so good that she’s invited to compete in a Valentine’s Day bake-off. As she prepares for the contest, she tries not to get distracted by Andrew’s visit to town.

When Andrew sees Kelly, it stirs up his old feelings. Little does he know that soon, in New York, he’ll compete against her in the bake-off…and they’ll both realize how much their past is a part of them still.

This irresistible romance includes a free Hallmark original recipe for Honey Almond Cake with Berries and Mascarpone Crème Fraiche.

I found this author after I watched the new Hallmark movie, Sand Dollar Cove. I noticed in the credits that it was based on a novel by Nancy Naigle. The name was not familiar to me, so I checked Hoopla and found several audiobooks by Naigle, including Sand Dollar Cove, but only one ebook, this one, The Perfect Ingredient.

I didn’t love the movie, in fact I’ve pretty much given up on Hallmark movies but every now and then I’ll watch one. It usually reinforces my belief that I don’t know why I watch these things. Sand Dollar Cove had a couple of tiny sand dollars in it, barely, and Chad Michael Murray, who I remembered from the Gilmore Girls, so I watched. There was no chemistry between the main characters whatsoever. The setting was pretty (although apparently they filmed it in Connecticut in March, because that’s what you think of when you think summer beach movie.) The plot was thin; the woman (whose name I forgot already and I only watched it a few days ago) is an architect/designer who was trying to buy this small town’s beachfront property to put in a beach resort. Murray plays the guy who owns the land but there is a broken down pier involved. The real estate company has no interest and wants it torn down; he won’t sell unless they fix the pier. That is the main conflict and it is barely there. So even though I didn’t love the movie, I figured books are almost always better so I’d try one. And it was!

I read it in one sitting, it is a short book and very fast paced. It, too, was made into a Hallmark movie and I tend to watch the food ones, so I probably saw it. But honestly, all their movies are entirely forgettable so who knows. Anyway, the characters definitely could have been developed a bit more, but the premise was good.

Andrew and Kelly were high school sweethearts, engaged to be married. Then he gets an offer that he can’t refuse; spend 6 months in Paris studying pastry. Kelly is the pastry chef, and Andrew much prefers savory, but he can’t turn down this opportunity. Kelly waits for him but instead of returning home, he stays in Paris, continues his culinary education and career. Seven years later, he finally returns.

Kelly is still angry and never really got over him. Andrew has been with women over the years, but no real relationships as no one measures up to Kelly. So when he finally returns, they meet up and try and get past all their history.

Meanwhile, Kelly is invited to participate in a baking competition and heads off to NY. I don’t know how much of this was based in the reality of cooking show competitions, but it was definitely fun to read the behind the scenes stuff.

A happy ending is reached pretty quickly (short book!) and it was a fast, fun read. If you like baking competitions, you will probably enjoy this. I did.

NOTE: Library users, I found this ebook on Hoopla!

Another note: Hallmark Publishing refuses to provide me with advance copies of their books, so usually they are older when I stumble across them, like this one.
