Whimsical and dreamy, this is a beautiful tale of self-discovery, community, and learning to let go of what no longer brings joy. If you’re in the mood for something cozy and uplifting, with relatable characters and a soothing, picturesque setting, this story delivers a moving journey of love, healing, and hope.

Just a personal side note: Hobby Island gets its name from the woman who owns it, but also because every type of craft is available here. I am not the least bit crafty; a visit to Michaels make me feel very uncomfortable! But I do appreciate those with the talent and patience to enjoy crafts. My mother-in-law was incredibly crafty – she knitted, crocheted, did macrame, quilting, shell art, needlepoint, sewing (she made my sister-in-law’s wedding gown and all the bridesmaid dresses!) She was amazing and so talented – and also a great cook. She taught my daughter some, but I was hopeless. I just don’t have the patience for it. If you are someone who enjoys crafting, that should be another level of enjoyment here for you in this book.

Katie works for a small documentary production company. This was a fun, breezy read—maybe not quite up to the level of Center’s earlier novels, but still a cut above the average romcom, warm, funny, and full of heart. Maybe not Center’s best, but definitely a feel-good romcom worth curling up with for the weekend.

The attempt fails, and Morris suffers a severe leg injury that ultimately proves fatal. Before dying, Morris extracts a promise from Jon to look after his daughter, Victoria (Tory), and ensure she marries well.

After eleven long years, Jon and his companions are finally freed and return to England. Jon is shocked to discover that both of his elder brothers have died, leaving him to inherit the dukedom. He also learns that Tory is now employed as his sister’s governess. This beautifully written debut novel tackles some serious issues like immigration, bigotry, and cultural identity, using standup comedy as the frame. Mia is a second-generation Palestinian-American and has lived with her very traditional grandparents since she lost her parents. She shared a love of standup comedy with her father and has been working on her own comedy act in secret, not wanting to disappoint her grandparents. Her heritage is great fodder for her comedy, but it’s her day job as a magazine fact checker that helps pay the bills. She has had a crush on her boss since he hired her, and when a reporting job opens up, he urges her to submit something. Instead, her best friend submits a piece about Mia’s standup, along with some video, and it goes viral. Mia’s grandparents are in the US illegally, and she is terrified that her success may lead to their deportation. When a new Arab neighbor moves into their building, she mentions knowing a family with the same last name that owned some very successful jewelry stores in Dubai. Mia’s grandmother refuses to talk about her family and ends up giving Mia a journal to read to gain some insight. The journal creates a second storyline that starts in the 1940s in Palestine, and both stories are woven together until all the family secrets are revealed.

Verdict: This compelling read should make for an interesting discussion, like James McBride’s The Heaven and Earth Grocery Store or Evil Eye by Etaf Rum.

The narrator does a wonderful job bringing the story to life. While Ellie’s tendency to catastrophize can be a bit much at times, it fits her character: young, sheltered, and thrust into unfamiliar territory. The portrayal of chronic illness is both realistic and respectful. Overall, this is an impressive debut from a promising storyteller, and I’m excited to see what comes next.

This was my first read by this author, but this is the last book in a series, although it stands alone beautifully. Judging by a lot of the reviews, people loved this series and were seriously bummed that it ended, and since I really enjoyed this, I will be going back to find the earlier books.

Single mom Cam gets stood up at the altar, not an auspicious beginning to the rest of her life. But she’s strong enough to just move on by moving herself and her young daughter out of the house she shared with her former fiancé. She is thrilled to find that the house she’s always loved in town is now available for rent, and she snatches it up. She soon finds out that her neighbor is the man who broke her heart back in high school, Dusty. Dusty has been avoiding any kind of commitment for a long time, but seeing Cam stirs up the old feelings. She is not having it, though, and tries to keep her distance.

Cam is a real people pleaser, longing for perfectionism and satisfying everyone else at the cost of her own happiness. Dusty is finally able to admit to himself that he wants to put down roots, wants to feel tled down for the first time in his adult life. Dusty has never forgotten Cam, in fact, his heartbreaking yearning for her shows up in spades. They slowly find their way back to each other and realize why their timing was not right 15 years earlier.

This book hits a lot of the most popular romance tropes: childhood friends to lovers, second chance romance, slow burn, single mom, small town, and a new one for me – love letters. This was such a compelling story with characters that I really cared about, despite not having read the earlier books. Can’t wait to get started on those!

This is Michael Connelly’s first new series since introducing Renée Ballard, but at least in this debut installment, there’s no crossover with Mickey Haller, Harry Bosch, or Ballard herself. So, if you haven’t read those series yet (and seriously, why not?), you can jump in here with a clean slate. That said, the story is set on Catalina Island, just off Los Angeles, and the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s department does play a role—so who knows where Connelly might take things next? Either way, this is a gripping, compulsively readable book and a stellar launch to what promises to be a terrific series.

Our protagonist, Detective Sergeant Stilwell, commands the local police substation on Catalina, a refuge for misfit officers who’ve been banished from the mainland after various career mishaps. Stilwell himself landed there after a homicide investigation went sideways—partly due to fellow detective Ahearn, who cut corners rather than doing the work. While Ahearn got a slap on the wrist, Stilwell got exiled. But as it turns out, the island suits him just fine.

Stilwell is also navigating a new relationship with Tasha, the island’s harbormaster. His deputies are mostly inept, providing rare moments of lightness in an otherwise tense environment. The story opens with a bizarre crime: one of the island’s protected animals, a buffalo, has been decapitated. But what seems like an odd local incident soon snowballs into something much more serious.

There’s also a high-stakes theft at the exclusive Black Marlin Yacht Club, whose membership is limited to 100 original families and their heirs—openings occur only when a member dies without descendants. The club makes rare honorary exceptions for the judge who visits the island weekly and the mayor. When the club’s manager reports that the priceless black jade marlin statue, a fixture in the lobby for over a century, has vanished, Stilwell learns that the front entrance—where the statue sat—is rarely used. Members typically dock their yachts and enter from the water side. With no security system or cameras inside the club, Stilwell must rely on footage from the harbormaster’s cameras that point to the dock.

But the stakes escalate dramatically when a body in a bag is discovered submerged beneath a boat, tied to an anchor. LAPD Homicide steps in, and Stilwell is initially content to hand over the case—until he learns that Ahearn, his nemesis, is leading the investigation. Ordered to cooperate, Stilwell and Ahearn are forced into an uneasy alliance. Distrust simmers between them, and when Ahearn once again takes the path of least resistance, jumping to an easy conclusion without doing the legwork, Stilwell defies orders, digging deeper on his own. Eventually, he manages to convince his superiors that the case is far more complex than it seems.

Connelly layers the story with enough red herrings and misdirection to keep you hooked from start to finish. I found the new characters engaging, and I’m excited to see how they develop as the series continues. As far as I’m concerned, Connelly remains the king of crime fiction, the unparalleled master of the police procedural, and the virtuoso of Los Angeles noir. Don’t miss it.

Scarlett Arbutnot is at the top of her chess game—both literally and figuratively. When Jaime Croft, an old high school flame turned award-winning documentarian, approaches her with the idea of adapting the book into a TV series, she agrees. As they collaborate closely on the project, old memories and unresolved feelings resurface. Their shared history is complex: their previous relationship ended abruptly when Scarlett left to pursue her chess ambitions, leaving emotional scars on both sides.

There was little depth to their connection beyond physical attraction, and that shallowness came through clearly in both characters’ points of view. At no point during the story did I feel that they were genuinely in love or that they truly belonged together. And isn’t that the point of a romance?

I also expected a more in-depth look into the chess world, especially given Scarlett’s status and the premise of her biography. I was hoping for insight into her mindset during matches, her preparation strategies, or even detailed accounts of her most pivotal games. Unfortunately, the book only briefly touched on a few matches. I loved the Netflix show, “The Queen’s Gambit,” and was hoping for something similar here, so it was very disappointing.

In the end, this book didn’t make the bold move I was hoping for. It was a struggle to get through it. That said, the narrators did a fine job with the material they were given – it was the actual story, the writing, that was the issue for me.
