Spotlight Review: RESURRECTION WALK by Michael Connelly

November 10, 2023

Lincoln Lawyer, Book 7

From the publisher:

From  New York Times bestselling author Michael Connelly: Lincoln Lawyer Mickey Haller enlists the help of his half-brother, Harry Bosch, to prove the innocence of a woman convicted of killing her husband.Defense attorney Mickey Haller is back, taking the long shot cases, where the chances of winning are one in a million. After getting a wrongfully convicted man out of prison, he is inundated with pleas from incarcerated people claiming innocence. He enlists his half brother, retired LAPD Detective Harry Bosch, to weed through the letters, knowing most claims will be false.

Bosch pulls a needle from the haystack: a woman in prison for killing her husband, a sheriff’s deputy, but who still maintains her innocence. Bosch reviews the case and sees elements that don’t add up, and a sheriff’s department intent on bringing quick justice in the killing of one of its own.

Now Haller has an uphill battle in court, a David fighting Goliaths to vindicate his client. The path for both lawyer and investigator is fraught with danger from those who don’t want the case reopened and will stop at nothing to keep the Haller-Bosch dream team from finding the truth. Packed with intrigue and courtroom drama, Resurrection Walk shows once again that Michael Connelly is “the most consistently superior living crime fiction author” (South Florida Sun Sentinel).

“The most richly accomplished of the brothers’ pairings to date—and given Connelly’s high standards, that’s saying a lot.”―Kirkus Reviews (starred)

“A stunning combination of police and legal procedural. . . As always, Connelly makes the tedious work of investigation fascinating as he shuttles between Mickey’s and Harry’s hard-bitten points of view.”―Booklist (starred)

“Another solid series installment from Connelly. This Lincoln Lawyer/Harry Bosch crossover is sure to keep readers on the edge of their seats as Mickey absorbs each legal setback. A brief appearance by Renee Ballard, as well as a few other familiar faces from the Harry Bosch universe, will delight fans.” ―Library Journal

As regular readers know, I generally do Spotlight Reviews on Tuesdays. I am making a rare exception for this extraordinary book. Count on this book topping my best books list of 2023!

The new Michael Connelly book is always one of the highlights of my reading year, and this book is truly exceptional; in fact, it may be one of his best. When someone writes as well as Connelly does, book after book, it becomes difficult to parse, but seeing how he has brought both his beloved characters, Mickey Haller and Harry Bosch, to share pretty much equal billing here makes this a winning read for any fan. All of Connelly’s books can stand alone but are so much better and richer for having read the others.

When we last saw Harry, he was in dire straights, suffering from cancer and refusing treatment. But being Maddie’s only living parent has induced him to try an experimental treatment, courtesy of Mickey Haller, the Lincoln Lawyer, and Harry’s half-brother. By putting Harry on his payroll, Mickey gets him health insurance and a way into this new treatment.

Haller has started a new innocence-type project, and Bosch is the perfect man to handle it. After Haller gets a conviction overturned and wins a mammoth lawsuit against the city, every convict in California is pleading for a chance at the same. Harry is put in charge of reviewing the letters and, if any spark interest, delving into the cases. There is one letter that jumps out at him from a woman who pled no contest and took a plea deal in the murder of her ex-husband. The deeper Harry gets into her case, the more he is convinced that something went very wrong there.

Haller is quickly on board after meeting the woman, but the other factions involved here make this a difficult case. Most of the legal wrangling takes place in front of a judge but no jury, making Haller’s usual charm pretty much irrelevant here but still a delight to read. There are plenty of twists in this legal procedural, but what I really loved was the writing – Haller is in first person, Bosch in third, making it easy to tell whose point of view we are in and how these two very independent men come to rely on each other. Another incredible read from the master of crime fiction.

Note: I love the TV series based on Connelly’s characters. Since Bosch first aired on Amazon Prime, Titus Welliver has taken the Harry Bosch space in my brain. It has continued with Bosch Legacy on FreeVee (also Amazon Prime.) But it didn’t happen when the horribly miscast Matthew McConaughey played the Lincoln Lawyer in the movie, but the Netflix series is so good that I now have Manuel Garcia-Rulfo in my brain as Mickey Haller.

SNOWED IN FOR CHRISTMAS by Jaqueline Snowe

November 10, 2023

From the publisher:

Fans of Christina Lauren and Maggie Knox will adore this fun and festive romcom featuring a grumpy/sunshine duo who find themselves stuck together over the holidays, where the weather outside is frightful—but inside, things are heating up in this sexy holiday story.

Sorority mom Becca Fairfield is used to guys not taking her seriously. She’s too blond, too quirky, or Just. Too. Much. So she’s ditched dating to focus on her job and a house filled with drama and plenty of tea. Now with the holidays and a major blizzard on her doorstep, Becca has everything she needs to survive the next two weeks on her own. Hot cocoa, plenty of books . . . and the memory of a steamy kiss with a certain sexy, grumposaurus next-door neighbor to keep her warm.

Only Becca’s seriously underestimated this Snowpocalypse. So when the power goes out and Harrison Cooper—football coach, master crank, and the guy who acted mega-awkward after said steamy kiss—offers her shelter, it only makes sense to accept. They’ll just be Blizzard Buddies. Hang out, stay safe, and maybe indulge in a little R-rated cuddling. Becca knows that Harrison isn’t the dating kind, and what happens during the storm lasts only as long as the storm. But are they keeping warm . . . or playing with fire?

“A superbly satisfying holiday romance with lots of witty banter, adorable protagonists, and expertly choreographed romantic moments.”―Booklist

“Snowe’s grumpy/sunshine pairing delves beyond stereotypes and offers up a sweet story of growth and understanding, interspersed with plenty of hot moments.”―Library Journal

This is such a fun holiday read! Becca is a house mother in a sorority house, and she loves her job, the girls, and all the peccadillos they get into. She doesn’t have much of a social life since her date with the coach next door. It was a great date followed by a great kiss, and then he ghosted her – not easy to do since he lives a few yards away. Nonetheless, they haven’t spoken since that night.

As the holidays draw near, the girls are all packed up and heading home for the holidays. Becca is staying and keeping things in order at the sorority house, except a blizzard is heading their way. When Harrison, the coach next door, offers her shelter in the storm, Becca gratefully accepts. They lose power almost immediately, but Harrison has cut up enough wood to see them through the storm if they huddle in front of the fireplace.

As they spend more time together, their attraction comes rearing back. Becca is scared of getting hurt again, but eventually, they talk about what happened and why, and decide to be “blizzard buddies” and have some fun during the storm. Afterward, everyone will go back to their neutral corners. But best laid plans and all that lead to a very happy ending, and make this a super fun, sexy Christmas read. Snowe is turning into an author not to be missed!

Spotlight Review: DIRTY THIRTY by Janet Evanovich

November 7, 2023

Stephanie Plum, Book 30

From the publisher:

New York Times bestselling author and “most popular mystery writer alive” (The New York Times) Janet Evanovich is in top form as she sends Stephanie Plum on the trail of a stolen cache of dirty diamonds.

Stephanie Plum, Trenton’s hardest working, most underappreciated bounty hunter, is offered a freelance assignment that seems simple enough. Local jeweler Martin Rabner wants her to locate his former security guard, Andy Manley (a.k.a. Nutsy), who he is convinced stole a fortune in diamonds out of his safe. Stephanie is also looking for another troubled man, Duncan Dugan, a fugitive from justice arrested for robbing the same jewelry store on the same day.

With her boyfriend Morelli away in Miami on police business, Stephanie is taking care of Bob, Morelli’s giant orange dog who will devour anything, from Stephanie’s stray donuts to the upholstery in her car. Morelli’s absence also means the inscrutable, irresistible security expert Ranger is front and center in Stephanie’s life when things inevitably go sideways. And he seems determined to stay there.

To complicate matters, her best friend Lula is convinced she is being stalked by a mythological demon hell-bent on relieving her of her wardrobe. An overnight stakeout with Stephanie’s mother and Grandma Mazur reveals three generations of women with nerves of steel and driving skills worthy of NASCAR champions.

As the body count rises and witnesses start to disappear, it won’t be easy for Stephanie to keep herself clean when everyone else is playing dirty. It’s a good thing Stephanie isn’t afraid of getting a little dirty, too.

“Those who don’t yet know sassy, spunky New Jersey sleuth Stephanie Plum simply must meet her…An uproarious, crazy, laugh-a-minute caper”—Booklist, starred review

“This is fast-paced and laugh-filled fun.”—Publishers Weekly

https://amzn.to/3tOwIff

Like millions of others, I loved this series but finally stopped reading at book 23. They really started to go downhill around book 20, with ridiculously far-fetched plot lines, including giraffes wandering the streets of Trenton, New Jersey, but once the zombies arrived, I was done. Oh, and please, please skip the movie of One for the Money, it was so miscast and awful.

Then the other day, I received my Book Club email from the Washington Post (highly recommend!) and I read about Evanovich reaching this milestone, the thirtieth book of an uber-successful series. I decided to take a look at it. And I enjoyed it! Things seem to have gone back to where they started, without forcing me to strain credulity and just enjoy the ride. Thank you, Janet!

Some things never change, thank goodness. Stephanie Plum hasn’t aged a day; she’s still a bounty hunter working for her cousin. Her best friend is the former hooker Lula, Connie is still running the office with a loaded gun in her desk, and Grandma Mazur is still kicking and staying on top of all the gossip in the Burg. And somehow, she is still torn between two men – her childhood sweetheart and Trenton cop Joe Morelli, and form Special Forces, current security expert Ranger.

This time Morelli is headed out of town to testify in a case in Miami. While he’s gone, he asks Stephanie to watch his dog, Bob, a loveable mutt who will eat anything, including furniture and car interiors. Stephanie has a few skips to pick up, but is having some trouble and if things don’t turn around, she won’t be able to pay her rent. When a local family-owned jewelry store is robbed, the owner hires her to find his security guard, who he suspects of stealing a tray of diamonds out of the safe the same day as the robbery.

The usual antics ensue, but it finally seems as if Stephanie has gotten at least a bit better at her job. Lula is as feisty as ever, and with Morelli out of town, things start heating up with Ranger again, despite her being in a committed relationship with the cop. There are several surprises along the way, and some nice twists towards the very shocking ending. Maybe taking a few years off helped, but I thoroughly enjoyed this latest Plum adventure, and look forward to whatever comes next.

THE HOLIDAY HEARTBREAKER by Maisey Yates

Four Corners Ranch, Book 5

From the publisher:

A fresh start is all she wants this Christmas, but maybe a cowboy is all she needs…

It’s not the holiday season she’d envisioned. But moving back home with her son, Benny, is all single mom Elizabeth Colfax can do after her ex-husband’s infidelity left their life in pieces. A fresh start at Four Corners Ranch means Elizabeth’s dream career in equine therapy can become a reality, allowing her to share her love of horses with Benny. If only it didn’t also mean butting heads with Brody McCloud, the frustratingly attractive cowboy who sets sparks off inside her.

Brody doesn’t do complicated, and Elizabeth’s got more baggage than an airport. But there’s something about the woman that’s always gotten under his skin in a very welcome way. As the simmering tension between them grows harder to ignore, they’ll have to decide if their undeniable attraction can outweigh a shared loss of faith in forever. Maybe this Christmas, they can find a family worth fighting for.

In the bonus novella Wild Night Cowboy, can a cowboy with a dark past find his future with the one woman he shouldn’t touch?

I love me a good cowboy romance, and throw some Christmas into the mix, and I am one happy reader! Yates always writes good books, and this is a terrific addition to a really fun series. I started reading this last year with the Christmas book in the series, but the rest of the books are not holiday-centric, until this one. That said, they are all good and while I think it helpful to read in order, they all stand alone just fine. So if you want to start here, you will not feel like you missed a thing.

The setting is Four Corners Ranch, an unusual spread in that it is owned by four different families, each with their own type of business. This book is set on the McCloud family’s ranch, that specializes in equine therapy. Owned by a family of brothers, Gus, the eldest, hires Elizabeth Colfax to run the therapy side of the things. They offer her a small home on the property, and she is thrilled.

Elizabeth had a rough childhood, growing up in the foster care system. She met Carter in high school and never had another boyfriend. They married young and had a son, Benny, but by the time he was two years old, Carter had fallen in love with someone else – and she was pregnant. He dumped Elizabeth in a heartbeat and remarried the new baby mama. She was devastated, mostly because of her childhood of abandonment. She moves into a tiny apartment with Benny, and her ex blows off most of his weekends with his son over the next several years to concentrate on his new famlily. Finally, Elizabeth decides to do something for herself and with the court’s approval, takes the job three hours away on the ranch.

There she meets Brody McCloud, one of the younger McCloud brothers and one of two that are still unmarried. There is a strong attraction between them, but they both fight it – until they can’t. Despite their wealth, the McCloud brothers grew up with an extremely abusive father, and a mother who was so abused that she left them all. Weirdly, Brody was the only son that his father never abused, and he has survivor’s guilt, among other issues.

As Brody and Elizabeth get to know one another, they both realize they are revealing things to one another that they have never spoken aloud before. Their relationship deepens, but Brody has long decided that marriage isn’t for him. He is a one-night stand sort of guy and very up front about it. Elizabeth decides to go for it anyway since she has no other dating experience, and once they end up in bed, all bets are off.

There are more than the usual hurdles here with all the trauma in their backgrounds, but these two fall in love, fighting it every second of the way. It was rewarding to see Elizabeth learn about sex, too – her limited experience with her ex left much to be desired. I loved watching these characters help heal one another and form a blended family. I was very sorry to turn the last page, and I’m looking forward to the next book in the series.

LET’S GET QUIZZICAL by Kelly Ohlert

November 3, 2023

From the publisher:

For fans of Lyssa Kay Adams and Jen DeLuca comes this fresh, funny take on second chances that proves love is anything but trivial.

For family-focused Charlotte, the chance to compete on her favorite trivia game show is a dream come true—the prize money could ensure the best care for her aging grandmother. But when she arrives on set, who does she see among the other contestants? Eli, her high school first love, at least until their shattering breakup. He has his own reasons for competing, not least of which is the stress of multiple jobs, college courses, and a father who has had multiple run-ins with the law.

When the casting department pairs them on a team, both Charlotte and Eli are determined to grit their teeth and make the best of it. That’s easier said than done, of course, and before long a national audience is breathlessly watching them bicker and air years-old grudges. Far from being angry, the program’s producers are ecstatic—the ratings are positively soaring.

As they compete together over several episodes of the show, Charlotte and Eli begin to suspect that old wounds might actually heal. Touring L.A. in their free time has given them the opportunity to get to know each other again—and reawakened feelings that are hard to resist. Until the show’s producers throw a wrench in their hopeful plans that will compromise everything Charlotte and Eli have worked so hard for.

Kelly Ohlert’s warm, witty second novel proves that the best thing to know is always your own heart.

“A whip-smart second-chance romance . . . Readers will be hooked.” —Publishers Weekly

“[A] clever and charming second-chance romance . . . Perfect for fans of rom-coms looking for a story with lots of heart and fun.” —Library Journal

https://amzn.to/3QD87TS

This author was new to me, but I can’t help picking up any book based on the trivia game show world. I’m a lifelong Jeopardy! fan, so I was all in. Unfortunately – or maybe fortunately for the plot of this book – the game show here is a world away from my beloved favorite.

Charlotte and Eli were high school sweethearts, but he ghosted her and she never knew why. He broke her heart, and even though many years have passed, she’s never felt anything like that for anyone else. Her family moved an hour away from the town where she went to school, and life went on.

Charlotte grew up with her parents and was especially close with her grandmother, a single mother when that was really looked down upon. The missing grandfather turned out to have a wife and another family, so when he learned about the baby, he chose the family he already had. This affected Charlotte’s grandmother throughout her life, and the lives of her family as well. She was all about honesty to a fault; no white lies, no prevaricating of any kind. It’s not as easy as one would assume to be 100% honest all the time.

The other thing Charlotte enjoyed with her family was watching the Game Show channel, with trivia games a family favorite. Charlotte had applied to be a contestant, but as the months passed by, she gave up on her dream. Until she got the phone call.

The way this trivia game works is that there are six competitors in a speed round. The last two left standing form a partnership, and compete each week with the latest partners until they lose.

Eli is still living with his father, who has spent most of his life in and out of prison. They are barely holding on with his father working two jobs and Eli working as a personal trainer. They are one major catastrophe away from losing their home or their cars and well, everything. So when Eli gets the call to be on the gameshow, he is hoping he wins enough money to put a new roof on the house and maybe allow his father to cut back to one job.

Of course, Eli and Charlotte are on the same game show and yes, the last two standing. They form a partnership to compete for the money. Unfortunately, when Charlotte sees him, she sees red. Their obvious connection and her dislike of her new partner are great for ratings, which the show desperately needs or it will be canceled. The producer is a slimeball and sees the potential here, especially as Eli and Charlotte move ahead in the game and it appears in their relationship. He offers them a deal; he will provide the answers and they can keep winning, thus helping the ratings and possibly securing him the emcee job. Charlotte is furious, but Eli is tempted – he really needs the money. But he won’t disappoint Charlotte again, so they both refuse.

Things get complicated after that, but as Eli and Charlotte get closer, she is able to finally forgive him for their bad breakup. But what she doesn’t know is that the producer has blackmailed Eli into taking the answers; he threatens to have Eli’s father put back in jail while he’s still on probation. And he follows through.

This is a second-chance romance with an enemies-to-lovers trope, and I enjoyed it. I hated the intimation that cheating is still going on in the game show world, but I am secure in the knowledge that Jeopardy! is not part of that world. This book had some laughs and some drama for sure, but what I think I enjoyed most was seeing the growth of these characters, especially Eli. And I loved all the trivia sprinkled throughout.

BookBitch Diary: November 1, 2023

The War in Israel

Patton Oswalt posted this on Twitter, and it really resonated with me.

I feel like I’ve watched Israel under siege for most of my life. I was a child during the Six-Day War in 1967. I was a young teen during the Yom Kippur War in 1973, when, inconceivably, Israel was attacked on the most sacred holiday of the year. I’ve lived through many, many Arab-Israeli peace talks. There has been a sort of armed truce in the area for many years, with terrorist martyrs blowing themselves up fairly regularly. But this latest attack from Hamas has me reeling, as does the Israeli response.

I am sickened by how the Israelis treat the Palestinians, but we have to differentiate between those Palestinians trying to live their lives peaceably under the most horrific conditions, with Hamas, a terrorist group with only two goals: destroy the country of Israel and kill all the Jews, with little to no regard for the repercussions that will affect the majority of Palestinians who are not part of Hamas. It’s an untenable situation with no discernible way out. It is heartbreaking for everyone involved and everyone watching from afar.

Spotlight Review: THE DUKE STARTS A SCANDAL by Sophie Jordan

October 31, 2023

Duke Hunt, Book 4

From the publisher:

A gentleman never dallies with the help, but the new Duke of Penning is no gentleman in this steamy fourth and final book in The Duke Hunt series by New York Times bestselling author Sophie Jordan.

A duke with secrets.

Lucian, the newly minted Duke of Penning, has much to prove— to himself, his family and the ton. Craving spotless respectability, he must find an aristocratic wife. Unfortunately, he can’t keep his eyes—and thoughts—off his deliciously distracting housekeeper. Such a dalliance can only mar the facade he’s constructed to protect his sisters’ future from the demons of his past…but this fiery passion is a temptation he cannot resist. While Susanna may not the bride he needs, she is everything he desires.

 A woman with a past.

As the housekeeper to one of the grandest estates in England, Susanna Lockhart has worked determinedly to become all that is proper and efficient, and she never steps over the line. Romance is an indulgence for the upper class, not for her—and most especially not with her employer. But every smoldering glance from the surly, handsome duke calls to the long-buried reckless wanton inside Susanna. A love between them can never be, but will Lucian and Susanna risk being together…

Even if it starts a scandal…

“For fans of the series, this book is a stunning finale and perfect for readers looking for a steamy novel. Those who enjoy alluring historical romances won’t be disappointed.” Library Journal

“The final entry in Jordan’s Duke Hunt quartet is just about as steamy as the earlier volumes, and adds a new twist by introducing both a heroine and a hero who fear ruination.” Kirkus Reviews

“Jordan wraps up her Duke Hunt series with another Regency-set romantic confection that successfully mines her literary talents for combining fetching characters and fanciful plotting with an abundance of sizzling sensuality.” Booklist

https://amzn.to/3rFYpGI

Taking a break from Christmas romances for the last book in the Duke Hunt series. I haven’t read them all, but I’ve enjoyed the ones I read. And with Jordan, her books usually stand alone just fine, and I don’t think you would know this was part of a series if I hadn’t told you.

Susanna is the head housekeeper at the Duke of Penning’s estate – except it turns out that the duke in residence is a fake. She meets the real Duke as he’s riding onto the property, and she accuses him of lying. Not an auspicious beginning!

The new and real Duke is as arrogant as one would expect. What Susanna doesn’t know is that he was brought up in very different, and much poorer circumstances, than one would expect of a Duke’s heir. What the Duke doesn’t know is that Susanna is using a fake name, hiding a youthful indiscretion that caused her family to cast her out. Her aunt worked for the Duke and arranged a position for her, and she worked hard to achieve her position at such a young age.

The two bump heads regularly, but Susanna bites her tongue. She needs this job, not to mention the roof over her head. The more time they spend together, the more confused the Duke gets about her. He enjoys her company but refuses to dally with a servant.

Lots to overcome here, and the happy ending is worth the ride. This was a steamy Regency romance, just the way I like them!

THE HOLIDAY MIX-UP by Ginny Baird

October 27, 2023

From the publisher:

While You Were Sleeping meets The Wedding Date with a fun Puerto Rican holiday twist in NYT and USA Today bestselling author Ginny Baird’s latest romance, in which a diner waitress agrees to be her patron’s fake date…only for him to land in a coma and her to be stuck playing his sweetheart with his family all week long.

Lonely-hearted waitress Katie Smith has nowhere to go for Christmas, and a huge crush on her gorgeous diner patron Juan Martinez. So when Juan asks Katie to pose as his girlfriend for holiday festivities at his family’s winery, Katie leaps at the chance…that is, until an accident lands Juan in a coma right after giving his folks the “news.” Katie knows she should tell the Martinezes the truth, but when they immediately embrace her, Katie is reluctant to let her fantasy of a family holiday go. And then there’s Juan’s brother, Mateo, whose smile tugs at her heartstrings just right―and who tells her perfect Juan might not be everything he seems.

Second son Mateo Martinez loves his brother, but Juan’s plan to “rebrand and expand” Los Cielos Cellars has cost their family too much and put its entire tradition in jeopardy. Katie seems to understand, but she’s still committed to Juan…even when Mateo starts to wish her gentle heart and beautiful smile were committed to him instead. With the winery at stake, secrets on all sides, and Juan due to wake up any day, can Katie and Mateo follow their hearts to a Christmas miracle, or will this mix-up ruin their chances?

“Baird excels at capturing the Martinez family’s warmhearted and somewhat kooky dynamic, adding to the cozy, homey atmosphere. This is a delight.” ― Publishers Weekly

“Fans of Hallmark movies and authors Sophie Cousens and Lia Louis will appreciate this wholesome holiday offering from Baird.” ― Library Journal

https://amzn.to/3tHiNI5

While You Were Sleeping is one of my favorite romcoms, and I rewatch it every year. So that description grabbed me right away. I loved the premise of the book, and it really lived up to my expectations.

Katie has no family left, other than her boss at the diner where she is a waitress. Her boss isn’t really her family, but she is like a surrogate mom. Katie has a huge crush on one of her customers, Juan. He is extremely good looking and kind to Katie, but she knows she is completely out of his league. Much to her surprise, he asks her if she would consider coming to his family home for Christmas. He is very tired of his family setting him up on blind dates, and if she would do it, he could finally have an enjoyable holiday. Of course she agrees, thinking once her spends a little time with her, he’ll probably ask her out for real.

The next day, as he leaves the diner, there is an accident, and only Katie’s quick thinking saves his life. But he has a head injury, and the doctor puts him into a coma until the swelling in his brain goes down. While she is at the hospital, his family arrives. It turns out he must have spent the day texting his family about her, because they immediately embrace her as his girlfriend – then fiancé.

Katie knows she needs to come clean, but she did make him a promise so she is torn about what to do. She hasn’t had a family Christmas in too long, and she just can’t bring herself to tell them. Meanwhile, she meets Juan’s brother, Mateo, who is a bit suspicious of her. But as he gets to know her, he starts wishing she was his girlfriend instead of Juan’s. And Katie can’t help thinking that maybe she had a crush on the wrong brother.

Everything works out the way it is supposed to in the end, but it was so much fun getting there. There are some serious issues as well, and I was completely engrossed in this story until I turned that last page. If you want a sweet, funny, heartwarming holiday romance, this is a good one!

Sons of Sinclair, Book 5

From the publisher:

With his family’s honor on the line, Norse warrior Erik Halverson has no choice but to follow the orders of the royal house of Denmark. Now he must follow his destiny―and royal command―to sail to Scotland, find his enemy’s weakest link, and abduct her. Their mistake, of course, was thinking the Sinclair lass wouldn’t fight back.

From the moment her four brothers took control of their clan, Hannah Sinclair has learned to stand tall and defend herself. So when a big, brawny, and admittedly handsome warrior tries to abduct her, she isn’t about to give in. And the more he tries, the more she’s determined to make it as hard as possible…and enjoy it all the while.

Now Norway’s greatest warrior has a Highland hellcat on his hands, and Odin help him, he can’t resist her. But with the brutal Sinclair brothers coming after them, Erik is out of options. War is inevitable. And when a man is forced to choose between duty and passion, only one will win…

I really enjoy the setting of this series, and I love that they can each be read as a standalone. But they are so much better read as a series, even if not in proper order. The stories are built around four brothers, whose crazy and thankfully deceased father, has named them and raised them as the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. Their sister is the heroine in this, the last book of the series.

This book centers on their sister, Hannah. She has been raised as a warrior, too, but more for her own defense. She doesn’t go out riding with her brothers. So when three of them are gone, leaving only one brother behind, things get a bit tricky. Hannah is kidnapped by a visiting tradesman of sorts – he’s actually there on direct orders from the Queen of Denmark. She is afraid that the Sinclairs will somehow compromise her daughter, and she orders her soldiers to find out if their sister is enough of a draw to keep the Sinclair brothers in line.

Turns out that was a good plan. Except Erik is the first man that Hannah has felt anything for – and he really admires her, too. But orders are orders, and he and his men proceed as planned. Turns out the Queen is holding Erik’s only family member, his sister, hostage until they return. The Queen’s plan is to marry off either Erik’s sister or Hannah to a man of her choosing, to keep her with the Queen and the Sinclair brothers malleable. That plan goes awry when Erik is determined to marry Hannah himself, and he along with the Sinclair brothers, hatch a plan to save both women from the fates the Queen has in store for them.

This was a really good read, fast-paced, a very interesting time period, and, of course, Scotland. What is it about men in kilts?? These truly can be read in any order, so if you like historical Highland romances, grab any book in the series and hunker down for a good, sexy read.

Spotlight Review: THE SECRET by Lee Child & Andrew Child

October 24, 2023

Jack Reacher, Book 28

The gripping new Jack Reacher thriller from the  New York Times bestselling authors Lee Child and Andrew Child

A string of mysterious deaths. A long-classified mission. A young MP with nothing to lose.

1992. All across the United States respectable, upstanding citizens are showing up dead. These deaths could be accidents, and they don’t appear to be connected—until a fatal fall from a high-floor window attracts some unexpected attention.

That attention comes from the secretary of defense. All of a sudden he wants an interagency task force to investigate. And he wants Jack Reacher as the army’s representative. If Reacher gets a result, great. If not, he’s a convenient fall guy.

But office politics isn’t Reacher’s thing. Three questions quickly emerge: Who’s with him, who’s against him, and will the justice he dispenses be the official kind…or his own kind?

“This is a terrific novel. Reacher continues to be one of the most compelling lead characters in the thriller genre, and the lean, unadorned writing continues to pull us through the story. If there were any doubts when Lee Child announced his retirement and started cowriting the books with his brother, Andrew, his eventual successor as Reacher’s chronicler, the last few books should have put them to rest.”–Booklist

“The plot gets a bit complicated, and readers will find a few nice twists. But mainly, Reacher provides the entertainment with his not quite believable fighting skills. An enjoyable, fast-moving yarn.”–Kirkus Reviews

I had almost given up on this series as I didn’t much care for the first two books written by Lee Child with his brother, Andrew. The Sentinel was okay, but I hoped the next book would be better. Better Off Dead was worse though, I didn’t really enjoy it, not the way I loved all the earlier books. In fact, I skipped the third book, No Plan B. But then I read that Andrew had gotten a contract for the next four books in the series alone, with no Lee Child involvement. So I decided to give him one more chance, and I’m very glad I did. I enjoyed The Secret; it was a one-day read for me, as it should be!

In an interesting turn, the book was set in 1992, so it was nice getting some more of Reacher’s back story. Reacher is an Army MP and is assigned to an inter-agency task force. There are representatives from Treasury, the CIA, the FBI, etc. The group is told that in 1969, there was a special project in India with a team of seven men, all chemists, working on a project together. One of the men has since died of cancer, but two of them had recently died under suspicious circumstances. The task force is asked to figure out who is behind the possible murders and more importantly, how to stop them.

This was a completely engrossing read with all the usual Reacher tropes; a decidedly taciturn Reacher, a deserted old building, underground passages, an occasional fight with Reacher against multiple opponents, and some really good twists at the end. I am so happy to say I am now looking forward to the next book in this series.
