From the publisher:

Two lives spent searching. One summer to never forget.

Life in Blossom Branch hasn’t always been sweet for Leah Marks. Growing up in the shadow of her overachieving siblings, the shy psychology grad has struggled to find her own place in the world. So when she inherits a long-forgotten summer camp, Leah sees an opportunity to help other kids who are struggling—and maybe find happiness for herself.

Her plan takes an unexpected turn, however, after a scorching encounter with the local fire chief, Lucas Carter. He’s brave, he’s kind…and he’s not quite ready to settle down. Leah is drawn to the rugged firefighter—but she fears she’ll be burned if she gets too close.

Still, Leah and Lucas can’t help but fall harder for each other, until the ill-fated uncertainty of their future can no longer be ignored. As another sizzling summer unfolds in Blossom Branch, will they both finally find the home—and the love—they’ve been searching for?

I don’t recall reading this author before, and she has written over 80+ books! So I wasn’t sure what to expect here besides the clues from the cover and the title: I thought it would be a romance on the sweet side, but there was plenty of heat. I loved the premise of the story, too. Leah grows up with a bunch of overachieving brothers, and as the only girl with a less than prestigious degree in psychology, she is thrilled to find out her aunt has left her a home and a summer camp in the small town of Blossom Branch. She gets the idea to renovate the camp and turn it into a charity camp, taking in middle school aged kids who have bad home situations or have gotten into trouble.

Working with some foundations, she hires a staff and funds the camp with grants. Campers will come for two weeks, then the staff will get a week off before the next set of campers comes in. It’s a big project, but Leah’s heart is in it and she makes it a success.

Unfortunately, on the first night of camp, one of the troubled youths starts a small fire in the kitchen. The fire department keeps it controlled until they get it out, but there is quite a bit of damage to the dining hall. Fortunately, the oh-so-hot fire chief, Lucas Carter, is willing to help and gets friends to start on the cleanup and rebuild.

Lucas is immediately drawn to Leah, but he is not looking to settle down any time soon. Leah finds him very attractive as well, but her first priority are the kids in her camp. And she has no plans on staying in this small town all year round, so geography is not their friend either.

As Leah and Lucas spend time together, they are both falling in love. It takes a lot to get them together, but it is so much fun getting to their happily ever after. I really enjoyed this romance, and I love that this author has so many books – I’ll always be able to find something to read!

Spotlight Review: LOOK ON THE BRIGHT SIDE by Kristan Higgins

June 4, 2024

From the publisher:

From the author of Pack Up the Moon comes a funny, romantic, and deeply moving novel about the unexpected rewards that come from life’s detours.

Lark Smith has always had a plan for her life: find a fantastic guy, create a marriage as blissful as her parents’, pop out a couple of kids and build a rewarding career as an oncologist.

Things aren’t going so well.

For one, the guy didn’t work out. Theoretically, she’d love to find someone else, but it hasn’t happened. Two, she’s just been transferred out of oncology for being too emotional. (Is it her fault she’s a weeper?) Three, her parents just split up.

Deviating from the plan was…well, not in the plan. A potential solution comes from the foul-tempered and renowned surgeon Lorenzo Santini (aka Dr. Satan). He needs a date this summer for his sister’s wedding. His ancient Noni wants to see him settled. In exchange, he could make a few introductions and maybe get Lark back into the field of her choice.

As a sucker for old people and fake relationships, Lark agrees. Teeny problem—she instantly falls for his big, warm family. Especially his estranged brother.

Meanwhile, Lark’s mom has moved in with Lark’s colorful landlady, Joy, and an unlikely friendship blossoms. The three women have a long summer and a big beautiful house on the ocean to figure out what’s next…and quite possibly learn that the best things in life aren’t planned at all.

“Bestseller Higgins proves her mastery of the romance genre in this emotional tour de force… Higgins balances tear-jerking moments with happiness and hope, and crafts strong female characters worth cheering for. Readers should have tissues at the ready.“ —Publishers Weekly (starred review)

https://amzn.to/3x4BG9G

This is an emotional, compelling read centered around three women. Lark is the protagonist, a resident in oncology who is also prone to crying. After she loses yet another patient, the patient’s family ends up comforting her, which her supervisor is not thrilled with. He boots her out of oncology and into the emergency room, where patients don’t stick around long enough for her to get attached. It’s either send them upstairs or send them home, so no tears need to be shed here.

One of the best surgeons on staff is Dr. Lorenzo Santini, whom the staff calls Dr. Satan. He is cold and short with the staff, to say the least, but an awe-inspiring surgeon. He approaches Lark and asks if she would fake date him for the summer, a series of events leading up to his sister’s wedding. She is dumbfounded; her one interaction with him had her in tears. He explains that his grandmother is near death, and her only happiness will be to see her favorite grandson with someone. Lark’s soft heart won’t let her refuse, and he buys her some amazing outfits to wear to the wedding events.

Lark has always admired her parents’ marriage and aspires to a relationship like theirs for herself. So when her mother moves out, ostensibly to let her father do some renovations on the family home, Lark isn’t convinced that’s what is really going on. She had her own perfect relationship once, that started in kindergarten and lasted most of her life. We get to look back occasionally and see how that relationship bloomed, and why it ended.

Lark rents a small guesthouse on the beach from Joy, a lonely woman who has spent her life trying to improve her looks via plastic surgery. She’s lost a few husbands, none of whom she really loved, and she lost her brother, who was truly the love of her life. Devastated, she packs up her money bags and buys this beautiful oceanfront home. She gives Lark a great deal on the rent, and in return, Lark will provide her regular facial fillers, Botox, etc. When Lark’s mother needs a place to stay, Joy invites her to stay in the big house with her. These women don’t really know each other well, but as different as they are, they form a close friendship.

The dates with Dr. Satan aren’t all bad, especially when they spend time with his family. Both of these doctors come from large families with lots of siblings, so Lark is comfortable with that dynamic and adores his sisters. The only problem is that she also finds herself falling for his brother, Dante. Oh, what a tangled web has been woven here.

There are some heartwrenching scenes here, and I found myself crying a few times while reading this over the weekend. But to her credit, Higgins doesn’t really write tearjerkers; there is a lot of humor and sweetness here as well. Higgins has become one of my favorite authors – her books remind me of Elin Hilderbrand, somewhat of Jodi Picoult, and this book in particular, of Colleen Hoover, but with slightly older protagonists. To be a tad more succinct – I loved it and could not put it down!

SUMMER AFTER SUMMER by Lauren Bailey

May 31, 2024

From the publisher:

A woman returns to her family’s Hamptons beach house for a final time—and a final chance at the love she’s lost before, in this contemporary retelling of Persuasion, perfect for fans of Emily Henry and Rebecca Serle.

Olivia Taylor’s marriage is in a death spiral when she agrees to come home to the Hamptons to help her father and sisters pack up the family estate. If it looks like she’s running away from her soon-to-be ex, Wes, and New York City, well, she is. But someone has to take care of things and that’s always been Olivia’s role in the family. After years of financial trouble, someone’s finally bailing them out with a huge offer to buy their beachfront property, which is a good thing, although it means losing the home she grew up in, where her mother died, and where she first met Fred, the love of her life.

It’s been five years since the last time things blew up between Olivia and Fred, but much longer since the first time. At this point, Olivia fears it was never meant to be, so there’s no reason to feel butterflies in her stomach at the idea of seeing him again. They’ve already tried, and tried again…and again…but she’s newly single, and she isn’t the same person she was the last time–and Fred has changed too.

This time, things will be different. Maybe, just maybe, the fifth time’s the charm.

“Impressive debut . . . The cutthroat world of pro tennis and the glitz of the Hamptons create a fascinating backdrop for these multilayered characters.” —Publishers Weekly

“[Readers] will rejoice when their HEA is reached.” —Booklist

https://amzn.to/3wPZa2g

I love finding new authors, and this debut novel is a winner. I grew up on Long Island, so I’m familiar with the Hamptons and that is the setting of this story. It is a seasonal resort area comprised of several towns that make up the Hamptons, and there are some people who do live there year round, although certainly a minority. It is beautiful and lush and wild in areas, and congested and quaint in others.

Olivia’s family has owned their Hamptons home and huge, beachfront property for generations. But her father has mismanaged the family fortune to the point of bankruptcy – the only way out is to sell the property. Olivia has just left her husband after catching him cheating on her, and she goes out to the family home to help her sisters clean it out for the new owner.

Turns out the new owner is Fred, the love of Olivia’s life. The summers of the title refers to their relationship, which begins and ends multiple times over multiple summers. Olivia is a professional tennis player, just a dream when she meets Fred, and nearing retirement when the house is sold. The story moves back and forth between the current day and the various summers of Olivia and Fred.

There are some interesting twists here that I never saw coming, and as their story unfolds, the book is unputdownable. The setting is bucolic, the characters are three-dimensional, and the romance unfurls beautifully. I am looking forward to more books from this new author.

Spotlight Review: SAVOR IT by Tarah Dewitt

May 28, 2024

From the publisher:

Summer won’t last forever.

Sage Byrd has lived in the coastal town of Spunes, Oregon (not to be confused with Forks, Washington) her entire life. She’s learned to love her small world, with the misfit animals on her hobby farm, and her friendships with the town’s inhabitants. But when her 5-year relationship ends and her ex, town-golden-boy Ian, suddenly gets engaged, Sage needs a win―something that will convince everyone to stop pitying her all the time, and to put Ian in his place. The Festival of Spunes, the town’s annual summer competition, would be the perfect opportunity. She just needs a partner.

Fisher Lange was a hotshot chef in New York City until the loss of his sister left him numb, grieving, and responsible for his teenage niece Indy. When Fisher loses his Michelin star along with his love of cooking, his boss sends him and Indy to Spunes on a much-needed summer sabbatical to consult on a restaurant opening. But when clashes with the townspeople threaten his last chance to redeem himself and a kiss with his new neighbor Sage leads to dating rumors, a strategic alliance might just be the best way to turn things around.

A deal is struck. Sage will improve Fisher’s image in the eyes of the town and remove the roadblocks he is facing with the restaurant, and Fisher will be Sage’s partner for the competition. But as their pact quickly turns into steamy rendezvous, emotional wounds begin to heal, and the pair tries to savor every moment, they start to realize that summer is racing by much faster than they would like…

Filled with spicy summer fun, small-town charm, and Big Feelings, this highly anticipated romcom is Tarah DeWitt’s best yet.

Most Anticipated by USA Today, Culturess, The Nerd Daily, Goodreads

“DeWitt’s sprightly narrative is by turns funny and red-hot, as Sage and Fisher, who share a love of puns, develop some serious chemistry… This is a charmer.” ―Publishers Weekly

“This Pacific Northwest rom-com has delicious tension from the first interaction. Add in fake dating and a steamy scene in a library, and who could ask for more? Readers will appreciate how much attention and care DeWitt put into creating fully-framed characters grappling with grief, chasing dreams, and figuring out how to live in the moment.” ―LibraryReads, May 2024 pick

“DeWitt delivers another emotion-packed rom-com that readers will be eating up, full of witty banter, comical hijinks, and tender moments of healing. Hand to those who enjoy grumpy/sunshine pairings as well as fake-relationship romances.” ―Library Journal

https://amzn.to/4bzagrt

This author was new to me, and I found this book on the LibraryReads May picks. Those recommendations are rock solid, and this book is no exception – it was a terrific read. Small town romance, fake dating, and some steamy sex combine to make a combustible, unputdownable read.

Sage lives on a farm, of sorts – she takes in any stray animals that need a home, from goats to horses to dogs and cats. She also takes care of her neighbor’s house; they are traveling quite a bit. They also rent it out, as is the case here, to a chef and his niece.

Fisher is reeling from losing his sister, assuming guardianship of his teenage niece, and then losing his job. It’s all too much, and his boss decides that what he needs is to get out of the city and into something new. She has purchased some property in the small town of Spunes, Oregon, for a new restaurant, and she asks Fisher to oversee the renovations and help plan the menu.

Fisher is having a time of it with his niece and this new project, but when he meets Sage his world starts turning around. Every August is tourist season, and the town sponsors a major competition. Sage needs a partner and Fisher fits the bill. In return, she will help him deal with the small town rules and regulations in getting the new restaurant ready.

Bottom line is Fisher and Sage spend a lot of time together. His niece, Indy, is the love object of one of Sage’s geese, and she starts hanging around with the animals and Sage’s nephew. Things are looking up, but Indy makes Fisher promise that they will return to the city at summer’s end. Of course, by then, he and Sage have fallen in love but a promise is a promise. Sage and Fisher need to find a way to get to their happy ending, and it is an emotional road to get there.

This was such an enjoyable read; the characters had depth, and I couldn’t help but root for them. I loved the small town, not that I could live like that but it’s fun reading about it. If you like steamy romances with some laugh out loud moments as much as I do, pick up a copy of this book!

LOVE AT FIRST BOOK by Jenn McKinlay

May 24, 2024

From the publisher:

When a librarian moves to a quaint Irish village where her favorite novelist lives, the last thing she expects is to fall for the author’s prickly son… until their story becomes one for the books, from the New York Times bestselling author of Summer Reading.

Emily Allen, a librarian on Martha’s Vineyard, has always dreamed of a life of travel and adventure. So when her favorite author, Siobhan Riordan, offers her a job in the Emerald Isle, Emily jumps at the opportunity. After all, Siobhan’s novels got Em through some of the darkest days of her existence.

Helping Siobhan write the final book in her acclaimed series—after a ten-year hiatus due to a scorching case of writer’s block—is a dream come true for Emily. If only she didn’t have to deal with Siobhan’s son, Kieran Murphy. He manages Siobhan’s bookstore, and the grouchy bookworm clearly doesn’t want Em around.

Emily persists, and spending her days bantering with the annoyingly handsome mercurial Irishman only makes her fall more deeply in love with the new life she’s built – and for the man who seems to soften toward her with every quip she throws at him. But when she discovers the reason for Kieran’s initial resistance, Em finds herself torn between helping Siobhan find closure with her series and her now undeniable feelings for Kier. As Siobhan’s novel progresses, Emily will have to decide if she’s truly ready to turn a new page and figure out what lies in the next chapter.

A LibraryReads Hall of Fame selection!

“Whimsically wonderful and wryly witty…. This is a swoon-worthy romance that has not only a great deal to say about self-love, forgiveness, and the importance of living in the moment but also celebrates the undeniable magic of books and the important place they hold in a reader’s life.” —Booklist (starred review)

“A cleverly written forced proximity romance for book lovers.” —Kirkus Reviews

https://amzn.to/3WNfL1m

I’m in for any book set in Europe, and the setting here is a charming small village in Ireland. In a bookstore, my happy place. The main character is Emily, a librarian who takes a one year leave from her library in Martha’s Vineyard to be her favorite author’s assistant and work part time in the bookstore. Talk about a fantasy life! I was all in.

Kieran Murphy is the proprietor of the bookstore, but he is not happy at all with his new bookseller. It turns out he is afraid she is a bit of stalker – his mother is a world famous author with a severe case of writer’s block. But Emily is no stalker, just a huge fan with a good memory for her favorite series of books, which proves to be helpful to Siobhan, the author.

Kieran begrudgingly gives Emily an ancient laptop and orders her to the third floor of the bookshop to start doing inventory. Emily is not thrilled, but she does as he asks. As the two of them continue to butt heads, you know where this is going to end up.

Meanwhile, it turns out Siobhan has gone through a couple of bouts of breast cancer, which partially explains why she never completed the series. When she’s not doing inventory, Emily works with Siobhan and tries to get her to start writing again – and she is successful. But Keiran isn’t happy about that at all, causing more strife between them.

This enemy-to-lovers romance is a charming love story with enough depth to make these characters come alive on the page. McKinlay did herself proud here – I loved it!

MY SEASON OF SCANDAL by Julie Anne Long

May 24, 2024

The Palace of Rogues, Book 7

From the publisher:

In USA Today bestselling author Julie Anne Long’s latest installment in the Palace of Rogues series, a notorious rake meets his match in a lovely girl from the country, changing the course of both of their futures…

A London season is the chance of a lifetime for Catherine Keating. But the ton’s glitter and decadence and casual cruelty threaten to crush her hopes of finding a husband before her season even begins…until she accidentally acquires one of the most scandalous men in England as a secret chaperone.

Famously fiery Lord Dominic Kirke can hold the House of Commons—and any woman he chooses— in thrall. But when his house goes up in flames in the dead of night, he finds himself at the Grand Palace on the Thames. And there he discovers his cynical armor is no match for another guest: an innocent country girl with a crackling wit and eyes like a summer sky.

He’s maddening, elusive, hopelessly charismatic, wrong in every way—perfectly designed to break her heart. But she doesn’t know she holds his battered heart in her hands. And though it will destroy him, Dominic knows loving her means setting Catherine free for the life—and man—she deserves.

“Catherine and Dominic’s story builds wonderfully through conversations—held in corners of ballrooms, in front gardens, over group dinners—so that by the time the two take a step that Dominic fully knows is dangerous to them both, Catherine is already there. As would be expected from the vapidly inclined ton, danger indeed arrives—in the form of a scandal that the two resolve in heart-sweeping fashion. Long writes romances for romance novel lovers.” –Library Journal

https://amzn.to/3yt8p8Z

I’ve really been enjoying this series loosely set around the Grand Palace on the Thames, a boardinghouse owned by two women who board guests if they pass inspection, and who are expected to abide by the somewhat strict house rules; dinner with all the guests at least four times a week, time spent after dinner as well, and so forth. The first couple of books were centered around the women who own the property, but since then guests have become the central characters, and they get their happy ending, as is the case here.

My only quibble with this book is the cover! Catherine wears several dresses that are described, and one that is at the center of the scandal, but none of the dresses are red. I hate to be picky about stuff like that but seriously, would it have ruined the cover to have her in her blue dress???

Catherine’s father is a doctor in the country, and her mother passed away years earlier. Catherine and her father are close, but he is growing older and wants to see his daughter settled. In Regency England, that means married. They don’t have a lot, but he has enough for a small dowry and to cover her living expenses in London, staying at the Grand Palace on the Thames. This is her one chance at having a season, so she hopes to make a happy match.

Lord Dominic Kirke had a bit of a kerfuffle with his mistress that ended with her practically burning down his house. While repairs are underway, he moves into the Grand Palace on the Thames as well. Kirke is well known to the whole of England as he is a fierce advocate of the poor, working to save children from horrible orphanages, sweatshops, and mines. He was born in poverty himself. One of seven children who all shared a bed, he determined early on to make his fortune, and he does, with the King recognizing his efforts and granting him the title.

Catherine is chaperoned by a woman who has more interest in gambling than keeping an eye on her protégées, but she is the only reason Catherine is even invited to a few balls. All she wants to do is meet a kind man who will be good to her, who wants a family, and if he has a bit of money and a home, so much the better. Catherine has never dealt with the ton, and her naivete is sweet, but she quickly is hurt by the vicious comments hurled her way by young women who think her too pretty and, therefore, competition.

Kirke sees what is happening and asks Catherine to dance. He has a reputation as a rogue for good reason; the housefire mistress is just one in a string of them. He hasn’t danced at a ball in over a decade, so when he does with Catherine, all eyes are upon them and her season is now made. Lots of single young men are now vying to dance with her despite her two-year-old dresses. But that infuriates the young women of the ton even more.

Since they both live in the boardinghouse, they spend a lot of time together and get to know one another. Catherine is such an innocent that Kirke doesn’t know quite how to handle her. But they quickly become each other’s confidante, and a relationship of sorts is born.

The scandal here was creative and original rather than the usual, being caught kissing or whatever. Kirke offers to marry her to save her reputation, but Catherine refuses. She loves him but doesn’t want to be his burden. On the other hand, Kirke has never planned on marrying so when Catherine leaves London for the countryside, he doesn’t intercede. But as the days go by, he realizes he misses her and finally confronts his feelings for her, and they get their happily ever after.

This is a fun series, well written with interesting characters and plotlines. My Season of Scandal is another terrific addition to this series.

Spotlight Review: THE PARADISE PROBLEM by Christina Lauren

May 21, 2024

From the publisher:

Christina Lauren, the instant New York Times bestselling and “reigning romance queens” (PopSugar), returns with a delicious new romance between the buttoned-up heir of a grocery chain and his free-spirited artist ex as they fake their relationship in order to receive a massive inheritance.

Anna Green thought she was marrying Liam “West” Weston for access to subsidized family housing while at UCLA. She also thought she’d signed divorce papers when the graduation caps were tossed, and they both went on their merry ways.

Three years later, Anna is a starving artist living paycheck to paycheck while West is a Stanford professor. He may be one of four heirs to the Weston Foods conglomerate, but he has little interest in working for the heartless corporation his family built from the ground up. He is interested, however, in his one-hundred-million-dollar inheritance. There’s just one catch.

Due to an antiquated clause in his grandfather’s will, Liam won’t see a penny until he’s been happily married for five years. Just when Liam thinks he’s in the home stretch, pressure mounts from his family to see this mysterious spouse, and he has no choice but to turn to the one person he’s afraid to introduce to his one-percenter parents—his unpolished, not-so-ex-wife.

But in the presence of his family, Liam’s fears quickly shift from whether the feisty, foul-mouthed, paint-splattered Anna can play the part to whether the toxic world of wealth will corrupt someone as pure of heart as his surprisingly grounded and loyal wife. Liam will have to ask himself if the price tag on his flimsy cover story is worth losing true love that sprouted from a lie.

“Witty banter and a well-paced plot make this novel an enjoyable must-read…Readers will be rooting for Liam and Anna in this heartfelt, sexy novel, Lauren’s (The True Love Experiment) best to date.” Library Journal, starred review

“The stakes set upon Anna and Liam’s relationship create juicy tension, and their chemistry is great. Both are charming and compelling romantic leads; their dual narration only reinforces that these two people should be together.” Booklist

“There are just as many emotionally charged moments as sizzling sex scenes, and readers will adore down-to-earth Anna, who’s the perfect match for uptight Liam. Lauren’s fans will be swept away.” Publishers Weekly

“Artistic Anna and uptight Liam make for a perfect case of opposites attract, and the island setting creates a wonderfully escapist mood. Steamy, fun, full of family drama.” Kirkus Reviews

https://amzn.to/3UGOWt8

This writing duo’s hit another home run with The Paradise Problem. A marriage of convenience with an unusual twist – Liam and Anna get married so they can live in subsidized campus housing, and it works out great. They barely see one another, and when their two-year lease is up, they go their separate ways. Liam gives Anna some legal documents and she signs them without even looking at them, assuming they are divorce papers. But they are not.

It turns out that Liam isn’t just an academic; he is heir to the sixth largest grocery chain in the U.S., only he wants no part of it. Both his brothers work there and that should be good enough for their controlling father, but he is convinced that Liam needs to be the next CEO when he retires. Liam has kept away from his family for five years, but his baby sister is getting married and he loves her, so he will put up with his family for her. Except that his family thinks he is still married to Anna, and legally he is.

Turns out there is a stipulation in his grandfather’s will – all the grandchildren must be married to get their 100 million dollar inheritance. So he tracks down Anna and begs her to be his wife for two weeks at the destination wedding. Anna has just lost her job, is dead broke, and clearly needs money, so they negotiate a $100,000 deal, along with Liam’s unlimited credit card so Anna can shop for appropriate clothes and grooming essentials for the exclusive wedding on a private island.

Legally, they are still married but they haven’t been in touch in years. When they first met, Anna was pre-med, so he’s been telling his family that she’s in medical school all along. What he doesn’t know is that she changed majors to art, and is now your basic starving artist working multiple jobs to pay the rent. No matter, she can fake that, too. Liam’s family is awful, and boy, could I relate! This was a wealthier family than mine, but the same roles applied – a dominating father who believed he could control everyone with money and siblings who would do anything Daddy wanted because all they cared about was money, too. Except Liam. Yes, he wants his inheritance, but not for the reasons his siblings do and they know it.

Anna doesn’t look like anyone else at the wedding with her striking pink hair, but Liam is entirely smitten with his fake wife and thinks she’s a knockout. The more time they spend together on this idyllic island, the more they realize they have feelings for one another. But everything blows up when Liam’s father demands he take over the company, and it turns out some of his family already knew that the marriage was fake.

This is a sizzling romance with a lot of laughs and heart – I loved it! Christina Lauren never disappoints, and this may be their best book yet. Don’t miss it.

THE CHEAT SHEET by Sarah Adams

May 17, 2024

From the publisher:

Is it ever too late to leave the friend zone? Discover the heartwarming friends to lovers romance that became a sensation on TikTok—now with a new chapter and a Q&A with the author!

The friend zone is not the end zone for Bree Camden, who is helplessly in love with her longtime best friend and extremely hot NFL legend, Nathan Donelson. The only problem is that she can’t admit her true feelings, because he clearly sees her as a best friend with no romantic potential, and the last thing Bree wants is to ruin their relationship. But those abs . . .

Nope! Nothing but good old-fashioned, no-touching-the-sexiest-man-alive, platonic friendship for Bree. In any case, she has other things to worry about. After a car accident ended her chance at becoming a professional ballerina, Bree changed paths and now owns her own dance studio, with big dreams to expand it. But one more rent increase could mean the end of the studio entirely.

Then, as usual, Nathan comes to the rescue and buys the entire building. A stubborn Bree is not happy about it and decides to rebel with a couple—okay, maybe more than a couple—of tequila shots. Then her plan backfires as she spills her deepest, darkest secret to a TMZ reporter. One viral video later, the world thinks Nathan and Bree are the perfect couple. Before they can really talk about her confession, Nathan’s publicist proposes a big opportunity that could mean financial security for Bree. The catch? They have to pretend to be in love. For three whole weeks.

What will happen when Bree gives in to the feelings she’s been desperately hiding for so long, and could she be imagining that Nathan is actually enjoying it? Sarah Adams scores more than touchdowns in this exciting romantic comedy.

After reading The Rule Book, I went back and searched out Sarah Adams’ books that I missed and found this one. It is more of a sweet romance without any sex to speak of, and it features friends-to-lovers and fake dating tropes. It is told from both points of view, his and hers, so we know more than they do.

Bree and Nathan meet on the track in high school. Her shoe is untied, and instead of telling her, he just pops a squat and ties it for her. They become the best of friends. Nathan is a football star, and Bree is on her way to becoming a professional ballerina. He goes off to college on a football scholarship, and she gets into a car accident, ending her ballet dreams. Eventually, she opens her own dance school but is on precarious financial footing.

Meanwhile, Nathan is now an NFL football star and is living his dream. Bree had cut off contact with Nathan while she was recovering from her accident, but they are now thick as thieves again. Except there is one tiny little problem; they are in love with one another, but neither will admit to it in hopes of saving their friendship. This stretches throughout the book, almost to the breaking point.

Bree gets drunk at a club one night and pours her heart out to a woman in the ladies’ room. It turns out that the woman is a reporter who takes a picture and posts the story, which goes viral. Mortified, Bree will agree to anything to get Nathan out of trouble. Turns out his agent is cashing in on it – she finds a sponsor willing to put them in a Superbowl commercial if they will fake date in public for the few weeks leading up to it. And you know where this goes…

This was a very enjoyable romcom, but also frustrating at times. We, the reader, know that they are both in love with each other, but are also afraid of killing their friendship. A professional NFL player has to beat women off with a stick, and Nathan is no different, but his heart remains true to Bree. Eventually, they figure it all out and get their happy ending. These books do not have to be read in order; I read The Rule Book first and didn’t even realize it was related to another book.

THE TEMPORARY ROOMIE by Sarah Adams

May 17, 2024

It Happened in Nashville, Book 2

From the publisher:

From the New York Times bestselling author of Practice Makes Perfect comes an expanded edition of The Temporary Roomie—a witty and relatable romantic comedy about finding joy in the unexpected, with a never-before-seen chapter.

No one said fair trade needed to be “fair.”

As the owner of Honeysuckle Salon, Jessie Barnes usually has everything managed and on track, but now in her third trimester of an unexpected pregnancy, she feels a bit lost and increasingly desperate after faulty plumbing floods her apartment. Unfortunately, her knight in shining armor is actually Dr. Drew Marshall, her best friend’s brother, and also the man she chewed out not too long ago for being a chauvinistic dirtbag.

Every moment Drew’s had to prove her wrong since then has failed, so Jessie’s opinion of him hasn’t improved. That remains the case when he agrees to let her stay with him during renovations, under one condition: she pretends to be his girlfriend for upcoming work festivities. For the sake of her brother, Jessie is willing to make the tough situation work, and giving Drew a taste of his own medicine sounds . . . intriguing.

But when their rivalry sparks a deeper connection, Jessie’s future gets even more unclear—and with a baby on the way, she’ll have to make a decision soon.

My deep dive into all books by Sarah Adams led me here, and I listened to the audiobook. I think the author has improved over the years as her newer books seem better plotted and better written to me. Nonetheless, I enjoyed this rom-com.

Jessie is entering her third trimester of pregnancy. The baby daddy dumped her when he found out she was pregnant, so she is leery of any new relationship for sure. When her house suffers a major disaster, she is forced to move out while repairs are done. She moves in with her best friend, but that becomes a real hardship as her little boy is not allowing Jessie to get the rest she needs. Her friend offers up her brother’s house as a refuge. He’s a family doctor – OB/GYN – and his roommate recently moved out so he has the space. Jessie takes one look at him and decides the only way to deal with this super hot doctor is to just hate him on sight.

Drew is happy to help out his sister’s friend, but when Jessie’s grandfather is coming to visit, she asks him to pretend to be her boyfriend. Unfortunately, he has a tough, all night long delivery, and oversleeps, forgetting about Jessie. But she is never going to let him forget that he let her down, even though her grandfather canceled and he wasn’t even needed.

The biggest problem I had with this book was how immature Jessie was. I understand she’d had a lot of trauma in her life, which is slowly explained, but her behavior was better suited to a young teenager than a grown woman on the verge of becoming a mother. Eventually, she accepts that Drew is as kind and nice as he is good-looking, and they find their happy ending. I liked this well enough to search out the first book in this series, The Off-Limits Rule, review to follow.
