JUST ONE TASTE by Lizzy Dent

January 30, 2026

From the publisher:

Olive Stone is about to spend four weeks in Italy with the most beautiful man she’s ever hated.

When Olive Stone and her Italian pseudo-celebrity chef father fell out fourteen years ago, annoyingly handsome Leo Ricci slipped right in as his surrogate son and sous-chef. No one is more surprised than Olive when her father wills her his beloved (and now failing) restaurant. Or that his dying wish was for Olive and Leo to complete his cookbook…together.

She’s determined to sell the restaurant. Leo is determined to convince her not to. As they embark on four weeks in Italy, traveling from Sicily to Tuscany to Liguria, they’ll test each other as often as they test recipes. But the more time Olive and Leo spend together, the more undeniable their attraction grows. Olive finds herself wondering whether selling the restaurant might be running away, and what it might be like to try Just One Taste of Leo Ricci. Because he isn’t who she expected, and this trip might reveal more about who Olive is than she’s ready for.

“Dent’s cozy, slow-burn romance is a heartfelt journey through Italian cuisine and culture. Readers will delight in the rich descriptions of food and dream of a summer holiday in Italy.” —Booklist

“In vivid prose, Dent brings the Italian countryside to life while building a simmering attraction between her leads. Hopeless romantics looking for an armchair vacation will want to check this out.” —Publishers Weekly

“Dent easily balances rom-com tropes with grief. [Just One Taste] doesn’t shy away from examining Olive’s complicated feelings while also indulging in some lighthearted fun. Leo and Olive have serious chemistry that simmers slowly on the back burner as they explore Italy, and the lush descriptions of simple foods like tomatoes, cherries, and oranges will make readers want to book a trip (or at least book a reservation at an Italian restaurant). A delightful, sexy summer read for foodies.” —Kirkus

https://amzn.to/4jSAgTE

I’m finally making my way through Lizzy Dent’s backlist. I’ve really enjoyed the books I’ve read so far, and I’ve been meaning to go back to her earlier work—so here we are.

Food critic Olive Stone has been estranged from her Italian, minor-celebrity chef father for fourteen years, ever since her parents’ divorce. He always chose his beloved restaurant, Nicky’s, over his family, a decision that ultimately fractured his marriage and reduced his relationship with Olive to little more than occasional phone calls. So Olive is shocked when, upon his death, he leaves the struggling restaurant to her.

She fully expected it to go to Leo Ricci—the restaurant’s impossibly attractive sous-chef and her father’s surrogate son. What she doesn’t expect is her father’s final request: that Olive and Leo complete his unfinished regional Italian cookbook together.

The plan requires a four-week culinary journey through Sicily, Tuscany, and Liguria (sign me up!) Olive will write the introductory essays for each region, while Leo will contribute recipes that best capture the local flavors. Once the cookbook is complete, Olive is free to sell the restaurant—something she fully intends to do. Leo, meanwhile, is hoping to convince Olive to save Nicky’s and update it with some of his ideas.

As they travel through Italy, clashing over food, memories, and unresolved feelings, the pair must also navigate Olive’s grief and her complicated past with her father. Along the way, unexpected attraction simmers, forcing Olive to reconsider not just the fate of the restaurant, but what she wants for her own life.

The food is abundant, the wine is always flowing, and Italy is vividly brought to life as Olive and Leo eat their way through each region in search of the perfect ingredient to anchor each chapter. Olive also leans on her two supportive friends, Kate and Ginny, as she tries to untangle her emotions and make sense of the choices before her.

While I appreciated the emotional depth of the story—this is less rom-com and more contemporary fiction—I struggled to fully connect with Olive and Leo’s romance. Their attraction is clearly established, but I personally didn’t feel much chemistry, tension, or heat between them. That said, Lizzy Dent does an excellent job capturing the complexity of losing a parent with whom you had a deeply complicated relationship.

I would have loved to get to know Nicky better. We only get one introductory chapter written by him and one by Olive, and I think including more of Nicky’s voice—or all three of Olive’s introductions—could have strengthened the story. With more focus here, the book might have felt just as much like a love story between father and daughter as it was a love letter to Italy.

The romance is enjoyable but definitely secondary. The descriptions of Italy and the food are vivid and immersive; I truly felt transported. I only wish we had learned more about Nicky, and I was disappointed that the book didn’t include any recipes. With all that delicious food described, a few recipes at the end would have been the perfect finishing touch.

THE CAPTAIN’S COOK by Victoria Vanransom

October 3, 2025

From the publisher:

“The wind is like a dance partner, always changing, always leading us in a different direction . . .”

When an ad for a luxury yacht searching for a chef crosses Jessica Kline’s eyes, she knows this it it: the chance for a fresh start. Broke, divorced, uninspired in her career, and unlucky in love in her late fifties, she finds herself at Marina del Rey’s California Yacht Club, staring down the Slow Dance as it waits to embark on a voyage to Tahiti and beyond. It is time for her interview to be the captain’s cook.

Jess’s culinary skills aren’t in question. The real test is whether she’s willing to take the leap of rediscovery into unchartered waters-with no guarantee this time she’ll make it out unharmed. But as soon as Jess meets Captain Cliff Reed, she begins to get the sense she’s not the only one who’s been tossed around by life’s waves . . .

Once upon the high seas, Jess must balance her ship duties with navigating the unpredictable winds of the skies and her crewmates alike-her enigmatic captain not excluded. But as she becomes filled with the breath of adventure and the fire of renewal, she soon realizes that it will be up to her to find the courage to face what lies ahead with an open heart and a sense of wonder.

https://amzn.to/43KXS6l

Vanransom’s debut novel unfolds like a sailor’s journal, charting a course from port to port, introducing an ever-changing crew, and weathering emotional and literal storms along the way. Jess Kline, a divorced woman in her fifties, is eager for a new adventure. A seasoned professional chef, she applies for a position aboard the Slow Dance, a large yacht heading for Tahiti. She joins Captain Reed, a charming, seasoned sailor with a reputation as a playboy, and his poodle, along with a crew of attractive young women, most of them novice sailors, which adds tension and unpredictability to the journey. As they cross the Pacific, each port of call is vividly described, along with the revolving door of crew members; however, the novel’s flow is occasionally disrupted by stilted dialogue. A slow-burning attraction builds between the Captain and his cook, but Jess values connection in intimacy, while the Captain resists commitment. Despite moments of jealousy and emotional turbulence, they eventually find common ground—and a happy ending.

VERDICT This detailed maritime journey may appeal to fans of nautical adventures and travelogues, but its slow pace and uneven dialogue may test some readers’ patience. Recommended only where there is strong demand.

EAT POST LIKE by Emily Arden Wells

July 11, 2025

From the publisher:

A Stirring Novel of Self-Discovery, Resilience, and Culinary Adventures from New York to Italy and Paris, Unraveling the Secret Life of a Lost Love—Perfect for Summer Reading

Eat Post Like is a heartwarming debut novel of self-discovery, resilience, and the transformative power of food.

Cassie Brooks has her life all figured out.

  1. Make partner at the prestigious law firm she works at by age 35
  2. Put in as much work as required to make goal #1 happen
  3. Spend as much time as possible with her boyfriend, James Colwell

Work might be exhausting, but for now she’s satisfied making good money and enjoying New York City with James. He’s an accountant but has surprisingly eclectic taste in food. Cassie is starting to think he could be the one when her life flips upside down with one call: James has died tragically.

Months into her grief, she uncovers a worn diary belonging to James and stumbles upon a remarkable revelation: James was the mastermind behind the hottest, anonymous foodie account in the city. With detailed food reviews, lists of new restaurants, and a tantalizing plan to involve Cassie, James had been preparing for an adventure of a lifetime.

When Cassie unwittingly accepts a dinner reservation on behalf of James’s viral account, she embarks on a whirlwind journey filled with unforgettable meals and unexpected connections. She goes from endless hours on-call as a lawyer to savoring exquisite pasta in Italy and indulging in the finest French cuisine in Paris.

But as Cassie navigates the demands of being an influencer and embracing her newfound passions, she struggles to find balance. Does she have what it takes to maintain her secret identity while pursuing her own dreams? Can she balance her grief of losing James with the thrilling possibilities that lie ahead?

https://amzn.to/3HVUMUP

Cassie is an ambitious lawyer clawing her way toward partnership, which means she’s perpetually on call and utterly consumed by work. This devotion to her career wreaks havoc on her two-year relationship with James, a man of seemingly infinite patience. In Cassie’s ruthless prioritization, work comes first, she comes second, and James trails a distant third. He endures this treatment because he’s deeply in love and holds onto the hope that someday Cassie will realize he matters more than billable hours. Tragically, that day never comes—James dies in an accident before Cassie can reassess her priorities.

With no family of his own—like Cassie—James leaves everything to her, including his apartment. Cassie steels herself to sort through his belongings. Hidden in his closet, she makes a startling discovery: multiple fake identities complete with costumes, IDs, and credit cards. What initially seems sinister reveals itself as something entirely different—James was secretly @NewYorkSecretDiner, the anonymous and wildly popular food critic with millions of followers.

After accessing his phone and social media accounts, Cassie discovers an invitation for James to join the prestigious Viand review team (think Michelin) for a European food tour. Seizing this opportunity, she requests a sabbatical from work and heads to Europe, determined to honor James’s memory by stepping into his shoes.

Despite having shared countless meals with James and following his Instagram account, Cassie faces the daunting challenge of masquerading as an expert among elite food bloggers and a renowned cookbook author. She throws herself into preparation—studying restaurants, researching chefs, and learning food photography—all while terrified of being exposed as a fraud.

The journey proves transformative. As Cassie navigates grief while experiencing extraordinary restaurants and luxury accommodations, the book becomes rich with meticulously detailed descriptions of real establishments and cuisine. The author, herself a food writer, brings authentic expertise to every page. While I’ll likely never afford to dine at most of these places (Noma has permanently closed, and the others are simply beyond my budget), I savored every description. Though I consider myself something of a foodie, I’m not as adventurous as this author—sometimes I prefer reading about exotic dishes rather than actually eating them.

This is fundamentally Cassie’s story of personal growth and self-discovery. While there’s a touch of romance, food remains the true star. The secondary characters, though not deeply developed, serve their purpose as mirrors reflecting Cassie’s transformation.

If you love food and travel writing, this book will satisfy your appetite. If you’re seeking complex character development or intricate plotting, you might want to look elsewhere. For what it sets out to accomplish, I found it genuinely enjoyable.

Spotlight Review: RECIPE FOR A CHARMED LIFE by Rachel Linden

January 16, 2024

From the publisher:

After a day of unrivaled disappointments, a promising young chef finds every bite of food suddenly tastes bitter. To save her career, she travels to the Pacific Northwest to reconnect with her estranged mom, and discovers a family legacy she never suspected in this delicious novel from the bestselling author of The Magic of Lemon Drop Pie.

American chef Georgia May Jackson has one goal—to run her own restaurant in Paris. After a grueling decade working in Parisian kitchens, she is on the cusp of success. But in one disastrous night, Georgia loses her sous-chef position, her French boyfriend, and her sense of taste! Renowned for her refined palate and daring use of bold flavors to create remarkable dishes, Georgia is devastated to discover her culinary gift has simply…vanished.

When she receives a surprising invitation from her estranged mother, Georgia flees to a small island near Seattle hoping the visit will help her regain her spark in the kitchen. As she tentatively reconnects with her mom, a free-spirited hippie eager to make up for her past mistakes, Georgia realizes there is something about the enigmatic island she just cannot piece together. Good luck charms start appearing in the oddest places. Her neighbor is a puzzlingly antagonistic (and annoyingly handsome) oyster farmer. And her mom keeps hinting at a mysterious family legacy.

With the clock ticking and time running out to win her dream job in Paris, Georgia begins to unravel some astonishing secrets that make her wonder if the true recipe for a charmed life might look—and taste—very different than she ever imagined.

“With delicate touches of magical realism and an abiding sense of comfort, Linden offers a gentle hug of a story.” —Library Journal

“This poignant story folds in themes of food and cooking with magical realism, grace, and a touch of romance.” —Booklist

https://amzn.to/3RRikv9

I read The Magic of Lemon Drop Pie and I loved it, so I was excited to get this new book by Linden. This book also has a touch of magic to it, so if that isn’t your thing, I get it, but it definitely works for me.

Georgia grew up in a small town in Texas on her family’s ranch. Her mother left when she was a young child, and she was raised by her father and his sister. No mention of her mother was ever made again after she left, and Georgia was never told anything about what happened or why, and she intuited enough not to ask.

Georgia loved to watch Julia Child on TV as a child, it was her most cherished memory, and Julia becomes a hero and a role model. Georgia takes herself off to culinary school when she is old enough, then works her butt off for twelve years in Paris kitchens to land the sous chef position at a Michelin starred restaurant. Her dream is to run her own kitchen in Paris, and she is in the running for a new restaurant executive chef position.

Georgia is also in a relationship with her boss, voted sexiest chef in Paris, and it’s been a couple of years. You know this isn’t going to end well, and it doesn’t. Then she gets an email from her mother, asking her to visit, and says she has life changing information for Georgia. Needing to get out of Paris for a bit, she writes her mother back and flies off to visit her at San Juan Island, in Washington state. There Georgia learns that the women in her family all her gifts. Her mother’s is her green thumb, her ability to make things grow and bloom despite the seasons or the weather. Georgia’s gift has to do with the food she cooks, but unfortunately, in addition to all her other problems, Georgia has lost her sense of taste. No Covid, but nonetheless everything she eats or drinks just tastes bitter.

Following Georgia’s journey is worthwhile and I couldn’t wait for her happy ending. There is a lot of drama before she gets there, and this was a terrific story to get lost in. I loved the touch of magical realism here, and that the romance actually takes a back seat to Georgia’s growth as a character. Very well done, engaging, and even inspiring - a wonderful read!

FOR BUTTER OR WORSE by Erin La Rosa

January 12, 2024

The Hollywood Series, Book 1

From the publisher:

A FEMINIST BOOK CLUB CHOICE AWARD WINNER!

They go together like water and oil…

All chef Nina Lyon wants is to make a name for herself in the culinary world and inspire young women everywhere to do the same. For too long, she’s been held back and underestimated by the male-dominated sphere of professional kitchens, and she’s had enough. Now, as co-host of the competitive reality TV series The Next Cooking Champ!, she finally has a real shot at being top tier in the foodie scene.
Too bad her co-host happens to be Hollywood’s smarmiest jerk.

Restaurateur Leo O’Donnell never means to get under Nina’s skin. It just seems to happen, especially when the cameras are rolling. It’s part of the anxiety and stress he has come to know all too well in this line of work. So nothing prepares him for the fallout after he takes one joke a smidge too far and Nina up and quits—on live TV.

To make matters worse, the two are caught in what looks like a compromising situation by the paparazzi…and fans of the show go absolutely nuts. Turns out, a “secret romance” between Nina and Leo may just be what their careers need most.

Now all they have to do is play along, without killing each other…and without catching feelings. Easy as artisanal shepherd’s pie. Right?

Food Network meets The Hating Game!

“[A] sparkling romance…witty and lighthearted, with plenty of tender moments to keep readers invested, this work gets the enemies-to-lovers trope right.”—Publishers Weekly

“This sexy, steamy contemporary romance, told from both Leo’s and Nina’s points of view, is well written and engaging. Descriptions of food and food metaphors are lightly laced throughout the novel, bringing humor to the story, and delightful secondary characters provide support and counterbalance to the protagonists. Issues of sexism and mental health are handled gently but realistically and add emotional depth to the well-developed characters..—Library Journal

https://amzn.to/41M9vrh

So I did actually read the second book in this series first, but then immediately sought out the first. I cannot believe I actually missed reading this one – it was on my Kindle, and it’s a romance set in the food world, definitely one of my favorites. Although the second book is set in book world, so hard to make a choice there. Let’s just say I’m very happy I read both!

Nina Lyon is a classically trained chef trying to make a name for herself in what is still a man’s world. Yes, there are dozens of well-known female chefs now, but it still seems like the patriarchy is hard at work in the restaurant industry. Anyway, when Nina is tapped to judge a cooking show, she’s thrilled. She’s a tough judge but fair – unlike her co-host, Leo. He owns a chain of family-style Italian restaurants, and he brings the charm to the TV show. They really don’t get along, and things come to a head when he makes fun of her on live TV, and she walks off the show. Makes for great television, but they both really need the show to build their credibility. Nina’s restaurants are in trouble, and so are Leo’s.

While they can’t stand one another, they need one another, so we delve into enemies to lovers, fake relationship territory here, and I loved it. Leo has some mental health challenges, which add depth to his character and the story. Food is always in the background, so don’t read this while hungry! This was a delicious read, and I enjoyed every morsel.

BEST SERVED HOT by Amanda Elliot

February 24, 2023

From the publisher:

Two restaurant critics learn their opposing tastes might make for a five-star relationship in the next foodie romantic comedy from the author of Sadie on a Plate.

By day, Julie Zimmerman works as an executive assistant. After hours, she’s @JulieZeeEatsNYC, a social media restaurant reviewer with over fifty thousand followers. As much as she loves her self-employed side gig, what Julie really wants is to be a critic at a major newspaper, like the New York Scroll. The only thing worse than the Scroll’s rejection of her application is the fact that smarmy, social-media-averse society boy Bennett Richard Macalester Wright snagged her dream job.

While at the Central Park Food Festival, Julie confronts the annoyingly handsome Bennett about his outdated opinions on social media and posts the resulting video footage. Julie’s follower count soars—and so does the Scroll’s. Julie and Bennett grudgingly agree to partner up for a few reviews to further their buzz. Online buzz, obviously.

Over tapas, burgers, and more, Julie and Bennett connect over their shared love of food. But when the competitive fire between them turns extra spicy, they’ll have to decide how much heat their relationship can take.

Elliot leaves your stomach grumbling and your heart pounding, and it’s hard to discern what’s more delicious: the elaborate dishes or the couple’s simmering chemistry.”—Kirkus Reviews (starred review)

“This romantic comedy from Elliot (Sadie on a Plate) is a sexy slow burn with sizzling chemistry between the well-developed protagonists. Julie and Bennett fall in love over countless meals, and the descriptions of the foods they consume are incredibly described and guaranteed to make readers salivate. Highly recommended for all libraries.”—Library Journal (starred review)

“This classic enemies-to-lovers plot is a slow burn, but the result is worth the wait and the food descriptions along the way will make readers salivate. Romance fans are sure to be charmed.”—Publishers Weekly

https://amzn.to/3xEEwyW

Julie is struggling to make it on her own in New York City. She has a roommate, of course, gleaned through an ad but he is the best one she’s had. She works full time for Mr. Decker, a retired network executive who still maintains an office, but is rarely there leaving Julie with lots of free time to pursue her passion – food writing, more specifically, restaurant reviews. As @JulieZeeEatsNYC, she wanders the city from one new restaurant to the next, specializing in those little gems with affordable pricing. She keeps away from the big name, super expensive restaurants, and has gained a significant following online. But she’s ready for more.

A local paper is hiring a new restaurant reviewer, and Julie thinks of it as her dream job. They never get back to her so she isn’t surprised to find out they gave the job to yet another white, privileged man. He will be reviewing those expensive restaurants for sure. When Julie runs into him at a Central Park food festival, they butt heads over reviewing in print versus online, and Julie videos the whole thing and posts it. That video garners her a lot of new followers, but also bumps up the newspaper’s social media as well.

Bennett’s new boss tells him he should do a few joint reviews with Julie, it will be good for both their social media standing. Julie agrees and a partnership of sorts is formed. Except the more time they spend together, the more Julie realizes that Bennett isn’t the spoiled diletante she thought he was, and he learns that online restaurant reviewers have just as much credibility as do the reviews in print. Oh, and they fall in love somewhere along the way.

When they finally stop fighting their feelings, Julie sees something in his apartment that enrages her, and she takes off during the night. It seems this relationship has met its demise – or has it? I’ll give you a hint; this is a romance so there is a requisite happy ending.

An added bonus to this fast paced, often hilarious romance is the food writing. Elliot does a remarkable job with it – half the time I thought I should be taking notes of these intriguing restaurants, but I’m assuming the names were changed or made up. Kudos to Elliot for pulling off this foodie romance with such style – don’t miss it!

SADIE ON A PLATE by Amanda Elliot

March 18, 2022

From the publisher:

A chef’s journey to success leads to discovering the perfect recipe for love in this delicious romantic comedy.

Sadie is a rising star in the trendy Seattle restaurant scene. Her dream is to create unique, modern, and mouthwatering takes on traditional Jewish recipes. But after a public breakup with her boss, a famous chef, she is sure her career is over—until she lands a coveted spot on the next season of her favorite TV show, Chef Supreme

On the plane to New York, Sadie has sizzling chemistry with her seatmate, Luke, but tells him that she won’t be able to contact him for the next six weeks. They prolong their time together with a spontaneous, magical dinner before parting ways. Or so she thinks. When she turns up to set the next day, she makes a shocking discovery about who Luke is….

If Sadie wants to save her career by winning Chef Supreme, she’s going to have to ignore the simmering heat between Luke and her. But how long can she do that before the pot boils over?

https://amzn.to/3MHLZDE

Sadie was working as a sous chef for her boyfriend, who dumps her and fires her. Just when she thinks she’ll never get another job, she gets something even better; a call from Chef Supreme (think Top Chef) and the opportunity to be on national TV and get her reputation back. Sadie knows if she can make it through to the semifinals, everything will be golden – she may even get the opportunity to realize her dream of opening her own restaurant.

On the flight from Seattle to New York City, where the show is filmed (one of the small variations on the Top Chef formula) she is seated next to Luke, a good looking man who has the hands of a chef. Sure enough he is a chef, and they really get to know one another on the long flight. When they land, he goes with her to Queens where she will be staying and takes her to a Korean speakeasy of sorts. They have a magical date, but she is going to be untouchable for the next six weeks. She promises to call when she can, and she heads off.

Turns out Luke’s father is one of the most celebrated chefs in New York, and Luke has been tapped to judge on the TV show when the regular judge has a medical emergency. Sadie is shocked to see him there, and even more shocked when he calls her “Sandy” as if he doesn’t remember her.

Sadie is of Jewish descent, and her goal is to let people know there is more to Jewish food than just bagels and latkes. She puts a gourmet spin on many of the most familiar dishes, and works her way towards her goal. Meanwhile, spending time with Luke is hard on her, and as it turns out, on him as well. But no worries, there is a happy ending in sight for both of them.

I loved this book so much! I am a huge Top Chef fan, and this felt like a peek behind the curtains of that iconic show. Having a Jewish protagonist was also a plus for me, not something I see very often in romcoms but that seems to be changing, very slowly for sure, but I’m always hopeful. While this is the first “Amanda Elliot” book and the author’s debut novel for adults, the author has several Young Adult books under the name Amanda Panitch. This was a terrific, one night read for me and I look forward to seeing what “Elliot” does next.

WHEN LIFE GIVES YOU LULULEMONS by Lauren Weisberger

when life gives you lululemons

Click book cover to purchase

I was not a fan of Lauren Weisberger. I was assigned to review The Devil Wears Prada for Library Journal when it first came out, and I really didn’t care for it. The story line was intriguing, but the execution was not good. This was the first sentence of my review:

“This chic read is sure to take the fashion world by storm, although the literary world may find it lacking.”

(If you dig deep enough, you can read the rest of the review on this site, just do a search.) In fact, it was that rare unicorn of a book that was completely eclipsed by the movie, which was worlds better. Since none of her later books were assigned to me, I didn’t read them. Until now.

It was with much trepidation that I started reading this new book. It’s gotten a lot of press, made it to a bunch of “summer must reads” lists so I went for it. And guess what – I liked it! Again the execution wasn’t perfect – the story is a bit convoluted at times – but it was a fun read.

There are three main characters here. Emily, from The Devil Wears Prada, where she toiled as Miranda Priestly’s number one assistant, has spun herself off from Runway magazine into the premier Hollywood fixer. Indeed we meet her as one of her clients has decided to wear a Nazi uniform for the fun of it and can’t understand why that is a problem.

Emily has a best friend, Miriam, who has left her high powered law office in NYC to be a stay-at-home mommy in Greenwich, Connecticut after her husband’s tech start up makes millions. Miriam is slowly adapting to the lifestyle, which is just skewered here, from wine soaked lunches to sex toy parties and completely ridiculous, over the top children’s birthday parties.

Then Emily starts losing customers to a younger, more tech savvy competitor and she hightails it to Greenwich to hang with her friend. But then another friend, Karolina Hartwell, gets into trouble.

Karolina is a supermodel married to a state senator with presidential ambitions. In the most far fetched plot point, she gets arrested for driving under the influence a few doors down from her house with a car full of kids. She becomes a pariah, and only Emily can help her regain her reputation and get some sort of custody of her stepson.

The fabulous Miranda Priestly makes an all too brief appearance, and if you blink you’ll miss Andrea Sachs as well. But all’s well that ends well, and everyone gets their happy ending here. If you want a read that is as light as a summer breeze, you’ve found your book.

The Beach House, Book 4

Take a vacation to the Lowcountry of South Carolina with this delightful summer read.

Cara Rutledge inherited her Isle of Palm beach house, Primrose Cottage, when her mother passed away several years earlier. She and her husband rent out the cottage every summer, and this time she got lucky and found one tenant for the whole summer, instead of the usual week by week rentals. Her tenant is Heather, a young woman with some serious mental health issues.

Heather lost her mother in a car accident when she was very young, and she bears the scars of that loss. She has severe anxiety disorder, is extremely shy and nonconfrontational. Her father has recently remarried, and decided he needs to spend time alone with his new wife so arranges for the rental. Heather is an artist and has won a prestigious commission to paint shorebirds for stamps for the U.S. Post Office. Staying on the beach is sure to inspire her art. While moving someplace new is stressful, she draws comfort from her canaries.

Bo Stanton is a local carpenter who is building a deck onto the beach house. He is entranced with Heather and her canaries, and she quickly falls for the very patient young man. Together they explore the area, and Heather learns about sea turtles and shore birds and life.

When tragedy befalls Cara, she begs to move back into the cottage, as she has always found solace in her mother’s place. Heather can’t say no to her, and Cara moves in with Heather. The women both work through their troubles, finding strength in one another.

This is a beautiful story that deals with love, grief, and especially friendship, all within the confines of the beach community. The descriptions of the area made me feel like I was there, so this was a nice little getaway of a read for me.

Since she can’t really cook, and her recipes are created by her producer’s wife, who she’s slept with, fraud seems an apt description. And her life implodes. Danny, her husband, leaves her and returns her cookbook advance, wiping out all their cash. Then he sells the apartment out from under her, leaving her penniless, homeless and pretty much friendless.

Since she can’t really cook, and her recipes are created by her producer’s wife, who she’s slept with, fraud seems an apt description. And her life implodes. Danny, her husband, leaves her and returns her cookbook advance to the publisher, wiping out all their cash. Then he sells the apartment out from under her, leaving her penniless, homeless and pretty much friendless. So Sunny decides to go home to the Hamptons.

Most people think of the Hamptons as a summer enclave for the rich and famous, and that is true. But there are people who live there all year round, and Sunny grew up there. Her sister still lives there but they are estranged, haven’t spoken in years. So when Sunny shows up, her welcome is a cop ticketing her for trespassing. Eventually, her sister lets her in and a strained relationship resumes.

Sunny finagles a job as the “trash” consultant at a high end restaurant using her niece’s name instead of her own. A few of the staff recognize her but don’t bother her. She has a plan to get the chef to teach her to cook and re-start her career, but he’s not interested. Then she finds out she’s pregnant and things get even more complicated.

This is a redemption story, but to get to that Sunny has to hit rock bottom. I was tempted to put down the book more than once as her life went on the skids as she was a completely unsympathetic character. Kudos to Laura Dave who somehow kept me turning pages anyway, and I was very glad I did. I liked how the story moved and turned, but the ending felt a bit rushed and incomplete. A few more pages would have been nice. In spite of all that, ultimately I did enjoy the book.
